WoW vs FFXI

Ok i dont know about you but i have had alot of ppl tell me they like WoW over FFXI.
I on the other hand like to play FFXI i connect better with it. so what are your guys opinion.

Wow Is a horible game IMO...

1: No story line.

2: PvP is based off who has the better gear, and money, not skill

3: You can just sit there, and hit 1 button to kill a monster.

4: Horrible communtiy

5: All about raids, and PvP, even though it is HORRIBLY ballanced.

6: The races look horrible lol

7: It is WAY over rated by the WoW fan boys.

I loved FFXI for a really long time. I've done everything there is to do, with the exception of new content yet to be released (which honestly, looks disappointing). I think it is an amazing game, but I just don't feel there is anywhere else for me to progress.

I started playing WoW recently, and it's a fun game, but I don't consider it a replacement for FFXI. I'm not nearly as attached to my second Aksannyi as I was to my first. I don't think I can vote between the games. Both are very fun in their own way. Up until recently, I enjoyed playing both simultaneously.

Pretty much everyone here will vote FFXI, though. But I can't vote. I enjoy both.

People like WoW because it's easy and accessible. There's really no world, so to speak, because the game is shallow enough that it's rather obvious you're repeatedly manipulating the same game mechanics to attain the same goals. It's Warcraft, but only in the sense that it's 52 pick-up style Warcraft with a few wild cards. All in all, it's a simple game with easily obtainable goals that's moderately enjoyable. Play it with your friends or find some in-game, and you're guaranteed to have fun.

FFXI, on the other hand, is a world that comes alive. Towns and cities are filled with character, and the characters that help bring them to life. It would be a massive understatement to say the game has plot. Much of the plot is intertwined and involves traveling around the world. The biggest problem is accessibility. They've done much to make the game more friendly to smaller parties and casual players, but it still remains that missions are laborious, day-long affairs that end in failure as often as they end in success. It's simply more difficult to jump into the game and immerse yourself than it is in WoW.

I played FFXI for much longer than I've played WoW, but this is why I always go back to WoW.

Keep in mind, this being an FFXI forum, I'd me amazed if it didnt absolutely smash WoW in the poll.

1. There is a story line, or rather broad story arcs about many different things from WoW lore that are all going on. You just have to look for them, often in quest text and the flavor chat npc's will randomly say.
2. Gear does play a role, but there is no substitution for skill. Watch some of the top ranked teams play and you'll see what I mean.
3. And in FFXI I could hit one button then walk away from the computer and never touch a button again. As one of the classes with fewer necessary buttons, I still have nearly 10 buttons that I use with great regularity. Not to mention having the vast majority of boss fights require a fair amount of movement and great situational awareness.
4. Which? The WOW official forums community? Hell yes. The trade chat channel community? Very often. However, their are plenty of good mature people that play the game. Most heavy raiding guilds are made up of primarily 20 and 30 somethings. Its true, the loudest characters give a bad impression, but they're not the only ones who play the game.
5. Yeah, there's a PVE endgame and a PVP endgame. The majority of the game is based around being max level. Thats not always something that appeals to everyone, but the majority of the WoW playerbase enjoys it. (And it is far more balanced than you give it credit for, especially when they have to balance it around both pve and pvp at the same time)
6. I think its more the art style and less the race design itself. I've always preferred the art style of ffxi compared to wow.
7. Yeah, thats what fanboys do. They overrate whatever they're into. Doesn't change the fact that its a good game.

Whether it's a good game or not is a matter of personal opinion, so you can't generalize either way.

In my case I consider it a bad game with way too many things I dislike to even bother listing.

well i now that this is a FFXI forum but if you see its more of to get to know you type post and poll ppl will give there honest opinion (hopefully) and i can care less either they bash one or another. So just give your opinion and enjoy others post.

FFXI is an Asian style MMORPG, had a bit of grinding, and a really nice story
WoW is an Western style MMORPG, its "fast" and "easy"

even though they are both MMORPGs you cant compare the two, since they are both different styles of MMORPG

I have looked for the story line for wow, and other such, I just see do this quest, and grind in WoW. FFXI, is grinding, but you are also doing a story line, and not questing to level up.

What I wrote was based on what I experiance in the two months that I was in the game. I hate the experiance, but I did meet a few people who did help me, but the majority of it was all "Do it your self!" Or "Go pester your friends for help!" when I asked for help.

I played on a Rogue, and all I did was hit 2 buttons, and the onster was dead. In Dungeon runs, I just followed the group, and hit 2 buttons again, and all the monsters where dead. Theres no challenge in WoW, and you don't need a group to do anything. I prefer games that require team work, and needs some one else to get past something, not just solo to 80, and do the raids and what not.

The art design is "cartoony" is more of what I mean. I don't like that kind of design. I prefer hard cor realistic graphics in a game, rather than "cartoony".

By what I mean that PvP is unfair is that it is geard to more of "Twinkers", and "Rich" players. As they can buy their gear, and they can just kill all those who aren't rich, or don't have twink gear. I went in at 29 in pvp, no twink gear, only gear that I was able to afford at that time. I got owned... lots. But as soon as some one gave me twink gear, I owned EVERYONE, except for those who didn't have twink, or where not skilled.

It is based on what I experianced in the game, but its not what everyone else. Yea, I hated the game, thats why I came back to FFXI, I like a challenge, or hard games, I don't like to sit there kill a few things, and level up when completing a quest. I prefer to actually work for my levels. Not that you don't in WoW, but you don't have to be with others to help you gain those levels is what I am saying. I prefer games that require team work. If you like WoW, ok, if you like FFXI, ok.

And thats one of, if not the biggest difference between the two games. FFXI is more about the experiences from 1-74. Yes, there is a very good endgame (minus the problems which have been mentioned elsewhere on these forums ad nauseum) but the story and experiences occur a lot in the levelling areas. WoW, on the other hand, is about giving you little stuff here and there on your way to level cap, and really trying to help you get the hang of your chosen class and expedite your journey to the cap. Once there, it turns into a whole new ballgame and thats really where the game begins. At that point you have two decisions for gear and game progression: PVE and PVP. I, myself, HATE pvp. Thats also where team work really becomes important in whichever you choose.
Anyway, thats where the games are fundamentally different and there it most certainly does boil down to personal enjoyment.

Btw, totally agree on the "Cartoony" thing, I had even meant to put it in my original post. There's a few armor sets that I like the look of WoW, mostly because they're different, but there's nothing that compares to how much I liked ninja, paladin, and ranger af/relic gear. Or no body piece near as awesome as an Osode.

When I saw this topic, I almost didn't even bother reading it and just closing it. Threads like this tend to get out of hand when fanboyism goes rampant. Glad to see that a nice discussion is going on and I want to thank you all for restoring my faith in the internet just a bit! Carry On!

(Fyi, I play both and I prefer each for different reasons. If someone said you can only play one over the other, I'd have to go with FFXI. So I'm gonna add another option to the poll for people like me cause I know there are a few of us on this forum.)

Saying that FFXI has grinding and a nice story and that WoW is fast and easy IS comparing the two games. Games don't need to be the exact same to be compared.

That aside, I chose FFXI. I tried WoW when I was taking a break from FFXI, but it just didn't do it for me. I got tired of almost every quest having me kill a certain amount of monsters, and the classes weren't really that fun for me. The only fun I really had in WoW was exploring with friends and doing instances with said friends. The rest just seemed like a chore to me. FFXI just seems to have a playing style and story that better cater to my MMORPGing needs.

I also agree with the cartoony design of WoW. I hated it lol
