  • If Versus XIII used the Draw/Junction system

Saw this posted on 4chan a little bit ago:

June 19, 2009 TOKYO, Japan - Square Enix's PS3 exclusive Final Fantasy Versus XIII was shown in the Mega Theater. Final Fantasy Versus XIII, the upcoming PlayStation 3 role-playing game will be using a game play we are very familiar with. Tetsuya Nomura the director has claimed he will reuse the Draw and Junction system previously seen in Final Fantasy VIII. Nomura said Versus XIII will have a new approach using the Draw and Junction system. The system will be refined greatly, and the type of magic will affect your gameplay tremendously. For example, drawing the Haste spell will allow your character to move faster, which will be great against some bosses. However, against other bosses the player will need to exchange their Haste spell for Fire spells. There will be a cap on the number of Magics you can draw and junction. Nomura said this system will provide a huge challenge never before seen in a Final Fantasy game noting this game will be the most difficult in the series. Stay tuned for further developments.

Now, first off, this is fake.

That said, I was kind of disappointed when I realized it was fake as the Draw system implemented like this sounds like it would be pretty awesome. On the other hand, it would be kind of lame to re-use an old system even if they did re-invent it somewhat.

    What do you think?

Re: If Versus XIII used the Draw/Junction system

Well, without the cap on how many spells you could hold, the draw/junction system produced the most brain-dead easy game in the series, so I'm not really a fan.

That said, there's nothing inherently wrong with reusing gameplay elements - the job change system appeared in FFIII, V, Tactics, and Tactics Advance as well as XI, in slightly different forms each time. (III is the only one of those mentioned where you couldn't combine abilities of different jobs.) The sphere grid and the license thing from XII were pretty similar in concept, although the details varied.
