DDO Goes Free to Play!

They're taking registration for D&D Online: Eberron Unlimited. The beta is going on now and the final is supposed to launch later this summer.

I don't know much about DDO, but it looks like they're relaunching the game as a free to play with micropayments for various extras.

From what disappointed friends have explained to me, the game was a real let down. I believe it was fully instanced and you could do absolutely zero as a single player so you had to sit in a quest hub till you gained the required number of players to go off and dungeon-crawl. I guess making it free to play is their solution to being able to recoup some of their losses on the micropayments.

Ya, I've heard that this might just be a last ditch effort to keep the game going. However the site does keep talking about solo play being available and they are having people beta test a new client so maybe they also fixed some things.

Of course there is also the 'who expects D&D to be solo anyway' aspect. I don't know of too may campaigns (table top) that have just the dungeon master (server) and one adventurer going out, though maybe there is if you couldn't ever get more people.

On a sort of kinda related note.

Matrix Online will go poof on July 31. I'm very surprised it lasted this long, only good thing about the game was (some of) the music.

I guess I will give it a shot, can't hurt to try a free MMO.
