Noice. With that "All three Prime games in one disk" things plus this, I suppose now would be a good time as any to get started on the Metroid serieseses . . . er, franchise.

YES YES YES YES indeed. Although, I never did get to play the second one. And I'm pretty sure I don't have the first one with me any more. =/

Not impressed with Metroid: Other M in the slightest. Very disappointed Nintendo tapped Team Ninja for this. Looks more like the shitty game Ninja Gaiden II was than it does a Metroid game. Actually, I though both NGs were shit, but at least the first one didn't feel as halfassed. All the DoA games were shit. The Volleyball games were chill, though. They should stick to that.

I know Nintendo will be watching it carefully, but then, they weren't exactly watching Battalion Wars when they farmed that one out.

Everything else looked pretty good, I just feel like they dumped Metroid in the toilet is all.

Never played the new Ninja Gaiden games so I wouldn't know. At any rate, considering this game takes place before all the others, I'm interested to see what the plot is going to be. The only material that expands much on Samus's Galactic Federation days is a short e-manga Nintendo had released in Japan, and what little you know from Metroid Fusion.

The problem is that it's basically God of War skinned with Samus.

All you need to know is that when it comes to a game with a great backstory and rich lore history is that Team Ninja will either ignore it entirely or rape what you dearly loved. In NG's case they did both.

I prefer they stopped with the prequelitis and let her past remain somewhat mysterious. There are still events post-Fusion that they should really be looking at. Moving forward with Samus' future is long overdue.

I think the e-manga did a sufficient job of setting up her past anyway.

                Re: Metroid: Other M

You know, I've been thinking about it, and it doesn't really bother me that much that it's clearly not an ambiance and atmosphere focused adventure game. I mean, sure, that's what you think of when you think "Metroid", but you don't think "RPG" when you hear "Mario", and a lot of people consider that one of the best games on the SNES.

I'm still expecting crap, because the sort of people who would even think of this is probably an idiot, but it could be a stroke of genius as well.

I'm still wondering how Team Ninja is going to incorporate their world-famous boob jiggling algorithms into Other M. I saw no zero suit action.

I saw a zero suit in an earlier frame in the video, but it wasn't there very long.

This interpretation of Samus will feature two morph balls.

Completely agree with the fact that they've stopped the plot cold for too long. I would've preferred a Fusion 2 for the DS. But I don't think it's bad to flesh out her past. In particular, I think Adam deserves a bit of attention if he won Samus's respect (affection?) in the past. On the other hand, while I don't have anything against the Prime trilogy, I don't think it was necessary to explain what Samus was doing in the 2 year gap between Metroid 1 and 2.

Didn't know Team Ninja had such a bad rep so I'm just gonna hope they don't botch this. I'm not enough of a purist to care if they deviate from the formula that Super Metroid and Metroid Prime laid out, as long as they stick to the spirit of Metroid (exploring a huge world while getting power-ups to explore further.)

Prime is pretty much the reason I want things moving forward again. I loved Prime, it just put the continuity in statis.

Team Ninja is known for the Dead or Alive fighters (its like Virtua Fighter, only it requires no skill to play). The first Ninja Gaiden was well-recieved, but I didn't like it because it strayed so far from its NES roots. Ninja Gaiden II there was a lot of internal problems going on at Tecmo at the time. I think it was about promised bonuses being withheld from the team by higher ups and that just killed their drive to make it as good as they could have.

Back in the NES and arcade days, Ninja Gaiden was right there with Final Fantasy pioneering story-driven games. You had Ryu inheriting the Dragon Sword and a mysterious Demon Statue and he set out on a quest to avenge the death of his father by an unknown party. His travels take him to America and other locations across the world. It was the first time gamers saw this kind of storytelling in an action game.

Team Ninja inherits the mantle of this series and goes Uwe Boll on it in terms of story.

My concern is that they are deviating from what makes Metroid good while trying to employ something they're not good at and the franchise has done fine without - a narritive. We're talking about a franchise where for years players were allowed to interpet the story for themselves.

See that's the thing with Nintendo characters - they've been silent for so long we identify with their characters by our own interpretation.
                            Samus' history

90% of that was not given to us in words, just the conclusions we drew. Other parts of Samus' history we've only seen in art stills and one manga.
