Next Week's Issue of Famitsu PSP+PS3 Features "NEW METAL GEAR"
Re: Next Week's Issue of Famitsu PSP+PS3 Features "NEW METAL GEAR"
There you go, kids.
Famitsu interview with Kojima doesn't reveal a platform just yet. Probably gonna have to wait until E3 for that.
The interview, however, does include another similar image, but with Raiden.

Re: Next Week's Issue of Famitsu PSP+PS3 Features "NEW METAL GEAR"
I'm guessing thats Big Boss at some point between Snake Eater and 4. No idea what that could mean, and the fact that there's a pic with Raiden makes it even more confusing. Discounting the Raiden pic, remake of MG1? E3 needs to hurry up and get here so I can be a little less confused.

Re: Next Week's Issue of Famitsu PSP+PS3 Features "NEW METAL GEAR"
Well, there is a connection between Big Boss and Raiden, its just taking the Parent/Child or Mentor/Apprentice theme and drawing a new parallel for it.
The Boss was Naked Snake's Mentor.
The Boss was Ocelot's Mother
Big Boss fathered Liquid, Solid and Solidus Snake.
Big Boss was Solid Snake's mentor.
Solidus assumed the role of Mentor and father to Raiden, though Solidus killed Raiden's parents.
Also, Big Boss and Raiden share the same first name - Jack.
Both Raiden's name and codename were inspired by the Mitsubishi J2M fighter plane, referred to as "Raiden" by the Japanese and "Jacks" by American fighter pilots.
In both MGS2 and MGS3, if either Snake or Raiden were a playing card, wouldn't they be a Jack anyway?
Solidus was referred to as "King" and Fortune as "Queen" so Jack would be appropriate. They were key players, Vamp and Fatman were just numbered cards like the rest of the grunts. This would leave Ocelot to be the wild card and Snake to be an Ace.
Volgin would be King in MGS3, The Boss a Queen and Snake is Jack. Ocelot and Eva are the Jokers.
If we were to look at Solid Snake outside of his Jack and Ace roles, there's also his real name, David. The name "David" was popularized by the biblical king of the same name. So Solid Snake never actually sticks to a role, but since he's the central character of Metal Gear, that would make him the King in terms of the franchise, wouldn't it?
So there ya go, there's your connections between Big Boss and Raiden. That and in MGS3 we had Naked Snake posing as Major Ivan Raidenovitch Raikov, who looks like Raiden.
There are tons of parallels you can play with like this, especially the MGS4 bosses, who intermingle the names of the four sub-bosses of MGS1 with those of MGS3.
And I still haven't played MGS4 or seen much beyond that one early cutscene with Naomi Hunter. Once people get me started on this shit they're amazed that I haven't seen and played the rest of it.
I know these things about Metal Gear not because I have to see it, but because Metal Gear is a comic book hero story. Snake is Batman, Raiden is Robin (Dick Grayson), Campbell is Commissioner Gordon, Mei Ling is Oracle. Ocelot is the Joker. Liquid is Ra's Al Ghul. Every other villain has a theme. Batman villians love themes. Psycho Mantis would be The Riddler. Fatman would be Adam Bomb. Sniper Wolf would be Catwoman.
Also, Snake dies, Bruce Wayne is dead, too. Coincidence? Dick Grayson is now Batman, would that make Raiden Solid Snake?

I couldn't disagree with this more.
In the interview, Kojima claims that this game takes place during the entire span of the MGS Saga. It's also being developed by the MGS4 team specifically, so it may be safe to label this as a PS3 title. Though the interview is heavily censored (to tease us, of course), he does say that the badge on "the old man's" hat (that may not be Big Boss, apparently) is important. It reads "Militaires sans Frontières", which translates to "Soldiers without Borders." He says it takes place in "XXX nation", where XXX happened and made it "XXX continent."
The parallels are something that make Metal Gear, Metal Gear. Though I think the parallels they're going to explore with this one are between Raiden and Frank Jaeger. What I think is that the "Raiden" we see in the scan is actually Frank Jaeger. (Kojima has also hinted that the older man may not be Big Boss...though he's probably just pulling our leg)
Cloning is a big theme in the series, and the difference in Raiden's character is that he's a memetic clone; he was mentally "programmed" to be the next Solid Snake. He was manipulated physically and mentally to become the greatest soldier ever, but not genetically cloned from Big Boss or Solid Snake. Sounds like a certain cyborg ninja, who Big Boss rescued from that fate at a young age. Solid Snake did the same for Raiden. The characters are also known for their female counterparts; Frank "rescuing" Naomi and bringing her in like a sibling. The same goes for Raiden and Sunny. Additionally, Frank clearly respects Big Boss in the same way that Raiden respects Solid Snake.
And of course, the obvious parallel of the cyborg ninja theme. The image seen in Famitsu shows what looks to be Raiden at first glance but with some subtle differences. The suit certainly looks different...even older than Raiden's suit. The eyes are also orange, and Raiden has always had blue eyes. That's unlikely something that would skip Kojima's mind, and more likely be used as a hint to something bigger. The character also has his left eye covered. After Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Frank apparently damaged his left eye in the mine blast. The next time we see his face, in MGS1, his left eye is clearly damaged. At the end of their stories, both characters are clearly conflicted about their fate; both fearing and perhaps understanding that they can never live a normal life with what's been done to them by the Philosophers and the Patriots.
All speculation, but Kojima has hinted that looks can be deceiving with what he's shown us in these brief teasers so far. I think the game will take the reigns of the Portable Ops franchise in telling us the untold story of Big Boss, and may delve into the relationship between him and Frank Jaeger. These two characters are very constant throughout the franchise, and would make suitable main heroes for a game which apparently spans the entire saga.

Re: Next Week's Issue of Famitsu PSP+PS3 Features "NEW METAL GEAR"
It is true that there is also some degree of linking between Raiden and Frank Jaeger. Grey Fox was the real Wild Card of MGS1, not Ocelot. Ocelot was just a ten suit that grew into something more later on. And in 2 and 4, Raiden is sporting the cyborg Ninja style before too long, moreso than Snake's. He's just had Snake's training through VR and such.
I have wanted to see them move the focus of the series to developing other characters. I don't really count Portable Ops as anything more than a multiplayer game, but we've really not yet seen where Big Boss goes wrong. At the end of MGS3, he's a hero.
This is also a good opportunity for them to further develop Ocelot in a more seasoned age and see how he and Big Boss develop their friendship further (that is, unless Ocelot was just playing him, too).

Play MGS4
Sure, you buying me a PS3?
I was gonna get one if my job had worked out, but that plan is on hold while I see if this new job I just had a drug screen for comes through.
Anyway, I'm waiting to after E3 to see if there's a price drop, but I figure Sony's head is still inflated enough to keep it at $400. At least the recently announced RPGs are finally making PS3 look worth the purchase.
Re: Next Week's Issue of Famitsu PSP+PS3 Features "NEW METAL GEAR"
Could Raiden have gone back to being the cyborg ninja? The no left eye is obviously new and I don't remember a bar code on his forehead. Looks a helluva lot like Raiden, but it definately wouldnt be the first time Kojima has screwed with fan's heads.

Re: Next Week's Issue of Famitsu PSP+PS3 Features "NEW METAL GEAR"
Its Olga Gurlukovitch! The Patriots found her corpse with part of the brain jettisoned by Solidus and rebuilt her like they did Grey Fox!
It would explain the missing eye (its the side Solidus grabbed her on), the too-feminine look, the barcode and cyborg ninja getup.
Of course, this is just wild, pointless speculation. We never got to see Frank's face in MGS, it could have been barcoded as well, but Rex went all stompy on him.
Re: Next Week's Issue of Famitsu PSP+PS3 Features "NEW METAL GEAR"
We saw his face. He was missing his left eye.

Don't recall it in the PSX version, but thinking back on The Twin Snakes on GameCube, yeah, you're right we dd see his face and he was missing his left eye.
All things considered thus far, though, this seems like it would be a story that takes place between MG2 and MGS, wouldn't it?
Grey Fox died in MG2, so to be in Cyborg Ninja mode, he'd have to be revived and put in the suit. This would put Big Boss mostly in flashbacks more than anything else.
Another parallel - Grey Fox killed Naomi's parents just like Solidus killed Raiden's. Difference was that Fox took her in beacuse he felt regret for the killings and was like a brother to her, Solidus just used Raiden because he really thought he was the next Big Boss and Raiden could be his Snake.
I was kidding about the Olga thing, really, she got killed pretty good, but then so did Grey Fox and that didn't stop them from bringing him back.
Re: Next Week's Issue of Famitsu PSP+PS3 Features "NEW METAL GEAR"
Yeah, he lost his eye in the mine blast where Snake left him for dead. We never really got any sort of confirmation that he died in MG2...but once a certain someone got to him, Naomi described him as "neither living nor dead." Probably similar to his situation in Portable Ops.
Kojima claims that this game takes place across the entire span of the series; so it could very well put us straight into the events that occurred between the earlier games.
After seeing what looks like Snake's bandanna over the eye though (and a few other things which I won't go into detail)...I gotta say I think it is in fact Raiden. Just not sure about the eye colour, or the fact that someone seems to have cut open his head at some point. There's really no point in speculating on all of this as Kojima will probably still manage to pull something out of left field (or his ass) and still end up surprising us.
