    Re: Rumors of new psp.

I don't "DOUBT" it per-se, because it seems like everything has a touchscreen these days. Hell, even my Cell Phone (the Android G1, as if you couldn't tell by my avatar) utilizes a touchscreen for primary browsing and phone purposes

The way I see it, Sony needs to incorporate touch into their new device, but not blatantly rip-off what's been done. Also, fans love their PSPs and would hate to lose functionality during a device port-over. I think Sony has shot themselves in the foot, but I don't think the UMD is necessarily a bad thing. Thinking objectively, I would HATE to download a game the size of Monster Hunter or Crisis Core. The revisions of the Sony Store and certain games forgoing UMD entirely signals things to come. Digital distribution has taken off, and with a jillion people having Wi-Fi and ready access to Credit cards, it's the next logical progression in game selling.

Maybe Video Game stores will go the way of the Video Game Magazine. Q_Q

Fans want two analog sticks. Fans love the standard Sony layout (it's been an interesting observation watching games adapt to a single set of shoulder buttons), and fans support cause of the extensive library (loving it or hating it non-withstanding). Sony needs to retain all this, give new shit, and not charge an arm and a leg. We need to feel like we're getting a well-deserved update, but also need to know that Sony listens to what we say and gives the consumer what they need AT THE RIGHT TIME.

[Let me say now that I support Sony a great deal, and I am ashamed of them as a consumer, and for them as a company. They fumbled bad this generation and I'm hoping they learned something from their constant failures.]

Technology is progressing, and with the release of the DSi (As an objective Sony Supporter, even I find the damn thing appealing), the ball is no longer in Sony's court. Clamor all they want about "not competing" in whichever market they claim they're not competing in, but they've been getting their asses whooped ever since the PS2-Era ended.

While I am depressed about that (I really want to see the PS3 suceed, but to be honest; that shit's not happening), nothing is better for Sony Supporters (LIKE ME!!!!) than when the company is down and those involved are working their collective asses off.

Nintendo has done model revisions to GREAT success (Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Pocket Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, Game Boy Advance Micro), hell, it's in their DNA. This is the 3rd DS revision we've seen, and us consumers have eaten it up.

Sony NEEDS to adapt to a changing market. People laughed at the DS ("TOUCH ME!!!" lawl), but as I stated, touch-screens are the new "in" thing, and they're so versatile when executed properly (I would know, my phone have one on 80% of it's face).

    Sorry for rambling.

But yeah, PSP2 for Christmas, FUCK YEAH!

      Re: Rumors of new psp.

Remember when people said touch screens on a handheld gaming device was stupid?

Anyway, I somewhat doubt the design that's been described. Sounds more fragile then the current PSP and after the list of releases I've seen for this year, I'm not convinced a successor is landing this year.

        Re: Rumors of new psp.

Like Apple's newcomer, the PSP 2 will be a compact device with a large touchscreen. However, where Sony's machine has the edge is when the touchscreen is slid open as it reveals familiar buttons, D-pads and – praise the Lord of Handhelds – dual analogue controls.

Couldn't have put it better myself. Not thrilled about having to buy yet another PSP but if it's good enough... I'll probably get it. I love my PSP to death.

          Re: Rumors of new psp.

Well, the PSP's form is incredibly dual screen friendly so they wouldn't even need to change the PSP's design save for adding the flap-like second screen at the top of the original screen.

PS > Dual 16:9 screens or a split 480p+ screen for browsing the internet for the win.

PPS > Does anyone know if there is some sort of attachment to make the PSP grip like a PS2/3 controller? That would make things way more comfortable for extended gaming at home or on the road (yeah I understand the conflicting concepts but it happens.)

Awesome, and Amazon can ship it here, so I guess that's another item for my next BD batch.

I imagine that if this is going to happen something will be said next month at E3.

                  Re: Rumors of new psp.

Yeah, but there's also been talk of more games for PSP being announced this year to give the system a shot in the arm. Another God of War, another handheld GTA for PSP, Dissidia, Persona, Growlanser and quite a few others. Would be kinda sad for PSP to be on its way out just when its really hit its groove on RPGs, too.

Not as many good RPGs as there are on DS, perhaps, but still plenty worth looking at.

I would hope that if they have a UMD-less successor in the works that they're planning to make a lot of the other PSP titles downloadable, somewhat like Nintendo has GBA downloadable game planned since DSi lacks the GBA slot.

Unless the new one has a UMD slot.

                      Re: Rumors of new psp.

BBQ, don't forget Assassin's Creed, LBP, and Rock Band. Personally, I'm kinda expecting the first one to be ruined by horrible bugs, and the last one to be extremely dull, but they're big names.

On UMD-less PSP, I think Sony just needs to build a backup creator into the Media Manager. Have it tied to your PSN account and PSP, like downloadable games, so people can't go around transferring their backups to everyone, but can put all of their games onto a memory stick (or, in the future, internal drive). Everyone wins-- Sony doesn't have to get download rights for people to have games on memory sticks, players don't have to use custom firmware to backup their games, and developers don't have to worry about everyone copying their friend's backups (or setting up download sites). It makes everyone happy-- current PSP owners don't have to fear losing their UMD games when they upgrade, future PSP owners could borrow their friends' old PSPs to rip games that they can find physical copies of, but can't download.

Also, because the PS1 used regular CDs (which can be played off your computer's CD/DVD drive by emullators), it would be possible to use the same technology to make PS1 games run on PSP. Again, prevents people from using unofficial firmware to play their games, and cuts down on piracy in the process. It also allows people to play games they own, but which there are no downloads for-- for example, everyone and their dog seems to want FF7 released on the PS Store. If you could allow people to use their old CDs to play games on their current console, you'd alleviate a lot of that-- not to mention open up the console to games that will never be on the download service.

Now, I know what you're thinking-- "Feba, your idea is really awesome, but wouldn't people just rip disks and then resell them?". Yes, that would be a problem, just like with every other form of media today (except books, which only prevent it by being a PITA to copy). It could be prevented by having a countdown timer linked to the software, so that it stops playing after a certain number of days have passed. You would then need to pop the UMD back into the drive, or the CD back into your PC, and have the certificate refreshed. At most, you would then have circles of friends and family that pass around disks for everyone to share-- which really, happens already with people who have full respect for the law, and it's not really a problem.

For those of you thinking this would just give tools to the pirates, no, not really. Pirates already have the ability to rip UMD games and play them off memory sticks. I'm not sure exactly how they create PS1 rips, but I know they're out there for the downloading. In fact, this would harm pirates if anything. More people using official firmware, with DRM'd backups, means fewer people to use unofficial firmware with backups that can be easily copied.

The legal right to backup media, at least in the US, is clear, so it's not like they're opening themselves up to lawsuits. It would help software sales-- I know one title I would definitely buy instantly were I able to back it up. And I would probably be far more willing to look at many more games. The only downside (compared to things as they are now) would be having to pop in your games every month or two; and that's really nothing compared to having to wait forever for them to be released on PSN (if ever), or having to carry them with you everywhere.
