Dragon Quest IX delayed in Japan to July

Square Enix has just announced the delay of DRAGON QUEST IX for Nintendo DS from March 28th to July 11th. No reason was mentioned for the delay.

Hopefully this does not effect the release of FINAL FANTASY XIII for PLAYSTATION 3, despite the company having an unwritten rule against releasing major Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy games in the same fiscal year.

Delays aren't new to the Dragon Quest series. DQVIII was delayed for years and pulled from completion phase multiple times. It was originally announced as an early PlayStation title and ended up being the platform's last major game from Enix. Dragon Quest VIII also suffered numerous delays, but nothing serious.

Though a rather minor delay, I'd say it's likely that we won't be getting any new info on DRAGON QUEST X for Wii until after July now.

Bad news, SE already said they weren't releasing FF13 in 2009, at least not in NA/EUR.

Yes, they've basically said they won't be releasing FFXIII until the next fiscal year after DQ9 release. That would be April 2010 at the earliest. I wouldn't be surprised to see it delayed till fall of 2010.

Having that unwritten rule unfortunately isn't going to boost DQ sales here, though in Japan I can see how the two would overshadow one another. Particularly since DQ had people skipping work and school in Japan well before Madden or Halo ever did that in America.

DQIII came out there and they just had a damn holiday because they knew people would skip work and school just to play it. Dunno if I like DQ series that much, but I'm looking forward to DQIX and DQX more than the FFXIII line. What can I say? There's plenty of FF-flavored titles and remakes out there to cover me in the meantime. Not to mention FFXI gives me a near-constant fix.

The delays don't bother me either way, particularly given how prolific Atlus is these days. There seems to be plenty of MegaTen to fill the time between Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest titles.

You listed DQ8 twice instead of 7 and 8.

Kind of sucks it's getting delayed, but it gives me more time to finish DQIV, DQV, Star Ocean 4 and all the other games on my list before then.

If it didn't take approximately 38 hours of gameplay for the average DQ storyline to take off (at which point it has reached the climax of the entire story and is about to end after the next boss fight), I'd like it much more.

I'd agree with you if I played RPGs purely for story, fortunately there's usually a lot more to RPGs than just a main storyline. RPGs devoid of dozes of sidequests, genuine character building and several dungeons are the RPGs that tend to fail - not the ones that didn't tell me a story every step along the way.

The to-do list in DQ VIII is pretty hefty if you look beyond the main story. The Alchemy Pot and Item Synthesis alone leave you with dozens of hours of hunting and exploring to do. Most people who play Elder Scrolls do anything but the main storyline. I almost spend more time customizing demons in SMT Nocturne than I do levelling them up. Sheesh, the hunts alone in FFXII were more daunting to complete than the main quest.

All those games have guides that are bible-thick, too. I actually prefer not to use guides at all - but that's just how much there is to these games.

So I don't need a story to grip me, just a good battle system and hefty amounts of content will do me fine. Its why I couldn't stick with stuff like Xenosaga, it was all story and very little (good) gameplay or content.

I don't see how a game's extra sidequests can possibly be interesting if the entire game up to the point where you can do those sidequests is completely boring.

So I don't need a story to grip me, just a good battle system and hefty amounts of content will do me fine.

It's been delayed due to a critical bug. I don't think that will affect the English release date, since I expect SE starts localizations before the game is even done these days. Can't say I'll be affected by FFXIII releasing a bit late since I'll be waiting on the 360 version.

Also, I'm going to get both AC complete and the demo for XIII as soon as they are out so that'll mean even more of Cloud and his sister.
