  • Re: What Makes FFXI great; or, Rapture Hopes

Why would anyone want to hamper their performance for the sake of some visual integrity someone came up with? You're perfectly welcome to full-time one set if you want to, but I'm going to gear swap the shit out of my gear cuz I'm going for optimization in my performance. Why? Cuz I like being good at my job.

Furthermore, this is an MMO. Gear swaps are kinda a part of the package deal here. Forcing everyone to lock into gear, and not being capable of swapping, kinda defeats the point of customizing your gear for each situation. To maximize for TPing, for instance, if vastly different than maximizing for WS, or even for Defense. Locking a player down to one set or the other hurts their performance overall. My WS set on Dragoon has a good number of +Slow% pieces. Yes it has great stats that make it awesome for WS, but due to the +Slow%, getting to that WS will take forever. At that point, I become a liability to the team, and away I go. If I went the TP set route, yes, I get to 100% faster, but then I belt out weaker WS than I would if I was in my WS set. Again, liablility. Again, I get booted.

Ultimately, gear swaps allows a person to maximize their performance, and becomes valuable to the team because no matter what they do, they're showing the group what they're bringing to the table and showing them that they're carrying their own weight. Being locked down hurts everyone.

THIS right here. And not just for WS, I'm main tank for my Dynamis shell, and I alternate between high DEF, high VIT, and high emnity sets depending on what I'm tanking. Why? Because as Lilith put it, I wanna be the best there is at my job, even if I dont have the best gear out there (Aegis where? LOL). Again, the way the game is setup, you can be free to not gear swap, but just cuz YOU dont like it, dont mean others who DO like it have to be forced to not swap.

I thought this dispute had been concluded already. Allowing players to hotswap all their gear is bad design. Not hotswapping your gear to increase performance in a game where it is allowed is bad play.

Yes it was brought up previously, and as often as people bring up the argument, I'll argue against it.

You guys seem to be forgetting that gear swaping, visual integrity and performance enhancement through player actions are three different things that just happen to concur on XI's macro system. But that has nothing to do with the fact that one or all can be compensated for or completely removed through the normal game design process.

So while your point is valid for XI it probably wont be so much for the new MMOG, depending on it's design.

Oh no, I know theyre all different things, but certain people make it seem like gear swapping is a bad thing, which it really isn't. And no, neither one of us said it was valid for the new MMO, but I sure as hell would like to see it in the new MMO ^^

as much as I like gear swaping to max out what ever I am doing... I would rather have gear locked while in combo (like WoW)

I have 4 helems on my DRG -.- 1 for WS one for TP and 2!! for healing breath -.- I find it stupid, but I have to so I can "be all I can be"

We'll just have to see. I wasn't sure that an online Final Fantasy would be any good. They've proved me wrong once already.

Im sorry but, if youre making a new mmorpg, should be compleately new with new stuff and nothing from ffxi.

If it was goin to be ff base it would be cool to be based off ff7 universe, would be hard as hell to make but it would be some thing very new and diff from most mmorpg, but we all know the new mmorpg looks like a futuristic version of ffxi....ill just keep dreaming.

ps. there is a concept vid of rapture out, for those of you that didnt know, s.e released one, you can find it on you tube also.
