Re: What Makes FFXI great; or, Rapture Hopes

I for one enjoy the camaraderie that involves FFXI (guess you gotta know the right peeps for that =P) and I also love the difficulty that it comes with. I for one am NOT a fan of easy games, so FFXI's crazy learning curve and difficulty really got me from the get-go.

Gotta say tho, the main reason I keep playing is cuz of the people i know in game =P

      Yea:
      • Slow combat.
      • Gamepad interface.
      • Square art.
      • Ye Olde FF type world. (Although I hope Rapture is a SaGa game.)
      • Level capped content (even though level capped equipment made this a huge pain.)
      • Non-obsolescense of old equipment.
      • Job change, in that it effectively allowed you to share your achievements (Rank, zone access, keys, etc) between several "characters".

      Nay:
      • Interface designed for SD resolutions.
      • Equipment swapping.
      • Crazy obtuse hidden subsystems (see: crafting, chocobo digging.)
      • Convolution stemming from goals or situations shifting over the course of the game's life. Damn near everything in this game is more complicated, and often in silly ways, than it needs to be.
      • Time sinking. This got better over time, but DAMN if the original game didn't like making you walk or wait forever to get anything done.

I hope Rapture turns out to be a SaGa game. I don't expect it will, but I wanna play a robot or a monster.

JPButton Final Fantasy XI: Profitable but Dying?

Not cool.... SE seems to have changed their mind. Rapture is being developed now to replace FFXI. Looks like the game will be shutdown in a year or (that's just my estimate)

Looks like I'm going to have to squeeze out as much FFXI time as I can while I still have the chance.

As long as I don't have to play as a bobblehead like in those FFIII and FFIV remakes I'll be happy.

Doom and gloom, don't you love it? EQ and UO are still in existence after all this time. What makes you think XI is going anywhere anytime soon? I know that I'll be playing both when it's out.

I was about to say the same thing, really the only MMO that got shutdown, was SWG.... and thats because they screwed with it to much and ruined it.

I wouldn't get worried until they start consolidating servers. I don't think they're stupid enough to just cut the cord with half a million users giving them money every month.

Mal, you really should read all of the article first. LOL When I read the top portion, I immediately figured it was not what it seemed. But now everyone is going to jump on the "OMGZORZ FFXI IS DEAD!" bandwagon. My guess (I haven't finished the article yet) is that they will let FFXI run along side Rapture until it is no longer profitable. As soon as it starts getting close to going in the red, they'll pull it. I believe they think its a POSSIBILITY that Rapture may EVENTUALLY replace FFXI.

A lot of the translation work I do involves quarterly financial reports just like this one, so this is a very interesting topic for me and I hope I can give you some insight beyond the scary blue font. These slideshows are accompanied with an oral presentation, and without that, we’re already missing a huge portion of the picture. So right off the bat, I would advise against taking that one sentence and running with it.
Settle down people!! Nothing to see here! Move along!!

EDIT: Also, the wording and the presentation (which wasn't seen by the translators) could mean for Rapture to replace FFXI FINANCIALLY for the company. I talked to my JP friend about this recently and he was talking about the financial climate in Japan currently. Attitudes are shifting about how to deal with the current state of affairs in the country. They are feeling the pinch too. So eliminating a game that is currently profitable, in fact, the most profitable in that division (see JP Button article) would be foolish especially in the current climate. I believe thats probably along the lines of what they meant.

THIS, THIS, AND MORE OF THIS:

A damn good success for Square Enix. It became the foundation for the growth of their Online Gaming efforts, and produced enough confidence to allow for the development of a new, large-scale online title. Rest assured, as the Developers are often quoted as saying, Final Fantasy XI will live on as long as there are fans to support it.

Was just talking with my husband about this and I brought up this point...

If you owned a store with a beverage section and you put out a beverage that started out selling like hotcakes but eventually it died down. It was still the most profitable beverage in that section but just not as hot as it used to be. Now you knew a new beverage was coming out from the same company, would you just take the old profitable beverage off the shelf entirely and replace it with the new one? Or would you put both beverages up against one another so you'd still make money off the old and see how well the new one would do?

Like my husband said Coca-Cola learned this lesson the hard way with their "New Coke" when they pulled Coca-Cola (the stuff called Classic now) off the shelves. They shot themselves in the foot BIG TIME. I don't think SE is that stupid.

TGM made the point well. Who wouldn't want it to replace XI? You want it to do worse or flop? That's just bad business. But yeah, people that don't read leads to, well...not reading...
