  • Where do you want to see the next Grand Theft Auto?

Rumor: Rockstar North prepping new GTA for holiday 2009 - Joystiq

Whether this is true or not, this seems like as good a time as any to start discussing where you'd like to see the next Grand Theft Auto take place.

They've already done London, Miami (Vice City), and San Andreas covered San Fransisco, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas; as well as the American Southwest in general (Area 51, Hoover dam). And then of course there's New York City, as represented by Liberty City.

So where do you want to see it go next? Revisit somewhere we've already been, or expand the world? Do you want to see another city, or a collection of cities a la San Andreas? For that matter, when do you want it to be set?

Personally, I think I'd like to see it stay in modern times; or maybe the 90s. I'd like to see a collection of cities, but I can't really think of any that would be good. Kinda like to see one in another country, but also can't really think of any specific one.

To be honest, I think I'd prefer to see the series go on hiatus as GTA4 didn't really seem to leave an impression with gamers that the previous three titles did. Honestly, I think banking on 80s and 90s notstalgia came back to haunt them. GTA3 was a modern setting for its time, but memorable for its groundbreaking gameplay more than anything else. Story and nostalgia were the selling points of Vice City and San Andreas, the refinements were rather minor, but still there.

GTA4 seemed more like a step forward and two steps back. Back to a modern setting, so nostalgia is out, but nothing that really helped it rise above previous installments, either.

I think I'd like to see a London setting again, perhaps Tokoyo. Japan is probably too foreign for Rockstar North, though, seeing as they thought all the small towns of Southern California were Hazzard County (which smaller towns in SoCal are nothing like) I have to wonder how much of America they actually know Other cultures might be too broad of a leap for them.

Yeah, a China/Japan area game would be real cool. Or how about GTA: Middle East?

Re: Where do you want to see the next Grand Theft Auto?

I have to completely disagree on taking a break. I haven't played GTA4 personally yet, but I haven't heard anyone who was disappointed in it. The worst I've heard is annoyance over the 'friend' system. It may not have had revolutionary gameplay like 3, but that's because the 2d -> 3d change FORCES revolution. It's sort of like putting down Wind Waker for not being as creative as OOT. maybe so, but what dimension do you WANT them to add? Switching to 3D has lost its magic.

well, one of the problems with Japan as far as GTA is concerned is that it's largely homogeneous. Tokyo might be more of a 'port of the world', but it would still probably lose the effect of "All races suck" that GTA has managed to bring up everywhere else (except maybe London, only played one mission of that). Still, it might be a nice location, if they can keep it from becoming Yakuza 4.

I'd like to see a GTA style game (maybe Rockstar could reuse or donate the engine) set in other countries, without all of the violence, with an emphasis on learning the language. That would be very cool, and Tokyo would be my personal top choice there, and there are a lot of other cities of the world that it would make not only a great learning experience for, but just a great virtual world. Especially if combined with a FREE system, so you can easily examine, read, study, etc. all of the little things in the world. It makes me very sad that such a system would be far more costly to make than it could ever make up, which is why we get stuck with My Language Coach bullshit. Not to mention the fact that it would probably be cheaper to actually send all of the people who would buy it to wherever they want to go for a couple years and just say "Hey, learn the language".

Having one set in South East Asia in general could be very neat, I suppose; Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, maybe a few other major cities. The Middle east could be neat, but I have a hard time thinking of where the could go with that and keep it Grand Theft Auto and not Kuma War; besides maybe Dubai?

Fucking Wikipedia. They manage to go an entire article on it without explaining why people might, say, steal the sign. Good work.

I agree, Japan or London would be sexy. I didn't really dislike GTA4, but I liked San Andreas and Vice City's engines better. I also miss my San Andreas and Vice City codes that I had on GameShark. The Deluxo was basically a Delorean, and I had a code that would turn the cars wheels on the side, when you pushed 2 buttons, so it looked like it was hovering. I'm not talking about the All Cars Fly Code, it didn't cause the car to fly but just look like it was hovering. Also all the codes to anything proof a car/change a car to any color codes.

I'd like to see it in the developer's trash can.

They keep selling the same game over and over again. It's always fun when you're in the mood to rape and pillage, but it's always the same girls with different clothes and the same towns with a different color of paint on the houses.

More like they've released 2 versions only.

Vice City and San Andreas were more like ver. 3.2 and 3.5 expansions for GTA: III. So the next GTA will probably be 4.2 or so.

But you'll seldom hear anyone complaining about it unless they really didn't spend much time exploring the cities.

Honestly, I wouldn't want to see GTA set in any other country. While it may seem kind of cool it just wouldn't seem like GTA anymore. It seems like the next place they will make it though is back in Vice City. In the original game, the PS2 versions, and with the Stories series, Vice City always seems to follow Liberty City.

Exactly. Half the FUN is the world of GTA. It's not all about how you press buttons, you know.

DTF: Have you ever played GTA? It went to LONDON in its expansions, not Vice City. The reason the Stories series followed the same path as the PS2 games is because it was a spin off of them. GTA4 is not in the same 'universe', and shouldn't follow the same path.
