  • My RPG to-do list... which next?

So Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 have been beaten to the true ending. I'm gonna save my second run - which I usually consider a perfectionist run - for later on this year.

Got a little heap of RPGs to play, I plan to stick with completing these as I save up for a Wii and 360. Finally time to move one from PS2 and these two look to have the best spread of RPGs for now, but I feel satisfied with what I have left to work with. I may try to snag Digita Devil Saga 1 and 2 as well as both Devil Summoner titles if I see them, but otherwise, I'm done with buying PS2 RPGs, I think. Well unless someone can persuade me over to other, but I gotta save money, ya know?

    So here's what I got:

Wild Arms Alter Code F (beer-coastering WA3, its total shit)
    Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne
Final Fantasy XII (halfway through my "Perfection Run")
Dragon Quest VIII (working on Dragoovian Trials)
    Rouge Galaxy
    Radiata Stories
    Aliter Iris 2
Final Fantasy VI (I honestly don't remember half the story anymore, replaying just for that)
Final Fantasy V (never really played much of it)

And I suppose I should put Kingdom Hearts trilogy somewhere in there. Haven't done Perfection Runs for the initial PS2 installments and borked my deck builds in PS2 Chain of Memories (screwed myself over for bosses, creating way too many Premium cards).

Imo, Rogue Galaxy and Nocturne would be the 2 I'd be mulling over. For me, Nocturne was a heavier rpg that took longer to "get into" and RG was lighter faire with a little more meat to the story. Being a Shin Megami fan myself, I'm drawn to Nocturne before RG of course.

Yeah, I think since I'm still coming down off the Persona games that Nocturne may be the first priority, its more of a matter of what comes after and divvying it up with my FFXI time, lol.

Oh man, it would be nice to have a 360, free to play FFXI and another game on the opposite system at any time, but alas, its not happened yet for me. Need more RL cash for that to happen first... and to pry off my comic book purchases, but Final Crisis is nearing completion, so that should make things a little easier.

Buy a PS3 and get Valkyria Chonicles. Seriously the game is worth it

Out of those go for FFV. FFVI was boring and it pretty forgettable once you've done the mine cart scene.

Radiata Stories is awesome and i wouldn't mind playing again but I can't play imported PS2 games on my PS3 and my PS2 is out on loan. The game was never released in the UK because nobody bought it in the US so it's not as if I can just go out and buy the PAL version of it.

As for FFXII just go level up your NPC on FFXI. It's the same thing

As for the others I haven't played enough of them to really say much.

Play V. The story wasn't quite as epic as some of the others but it was still a fun game.

Also, are you playing the SNES, PS1 or GBA version? The GBA really is the best one if you got it. ^ ^ of course I have my own little biased towards because it has my favorite class ever in it (take a wild guess )

And I agree that WA3 was boring as shit. Are you a star ocean fan at all? SO3 (if you can even find it these days) was pretty epic. The ending was completely fucked up and right out of left field but the gameplay was pretty solid and the characters were quite well done ( Albel)

It's also the only RPG I've ever seen where you can die by running out of MP.

EDIT: What Fire said. Valkyria is one of the best RPG's I've played in a good while. @.@ this thread is making me want to fire up Lunar or Legend of Dragoon again...

Not looking for much other to do right now outside of PS2 or PSX titles, FFV and VI are the PSX versions. I can endure the absurd loading well enough.

Definitely not interested in PS3 until an SMT title or DCU Online finally gets a date set (even then, from what I've learned of Sony's MMO support on consoles, I should just get the PC version). So that really just leaves me with FF Versus XIII as point of interest right now. No single game is $400 good, so I can't commit a purchase for one game.

Ya, VC is a really good game. I can't say its worth buying a PS3 just for it but there are a few other good games out on the PS3 and, between all of them, I feel its now worth it to buy a PS3.

I'd prolly get 5 and 6 out of the way first. If you had a PSP I'd consider porting them over to that, but otherwise yea. Both are very good games, 6 is already pretty popular obviously and I really enjoyed 5 cause I'm just a sucker when it comes to Job systems.

I already express my opinions on Wild Arms in the other thread, and you can't really go to wrong with a PS2 game starting with "Shin Megami Tensei". Imo just narrow it down to 6 and roll a die <_<. That's how I decide what RPG to replay.

                  bbq,

                  PS2
-If you haven't played Odin Sphere, do it. Rent it, buy it, borrow it. It is amazing.
                  -Shadow of the Colossus
-and definitely Star oceans: till the end of time.

Don't get a Wii, as an adult gamer to another, the wii has done nothing but disappoint me over and over again. I'm happy I got it, incase Nintendo get's their act together and put's out something that isn't junk for 6-10 year olds. And any Wii fan's i'm not trying to offend, but you can't deny the crap that system has on it.

There is a pretty good rumor that in April the 80gig PS3 will drop 100 bucks and be priced at 300$

I was going to make a post on here about the xbox 360 game, The Last Remenant. This kinda save's me some time. DO NOT BUY IT. It's made by square-enix, uses the Unreal3 graphics engine, and feels like it should have been delayed about another year. It has horrible load times on everything, the story is horribly introduced. It has decent voice acting but it just seems weird all these decidedly british, scottish, americanish accents end up in a fantasy world that has nothing to do with earth.
The battle system is pretty much luck, as your choices for combat change based on some magical system that has no bearing on anything happening in combat.
Sometimes your unit's won't even have an option to attack. Sometime's they won't be able to heal...but they'll be able to cast offensive spells...god it's making me mad enough to punch babies just typing about it.

If you get a 360 though...You must, I repeat you must download a game called, Braid. Don't look up anything about it, it will spoil it, and if you don't like it, i'll paypal you the 9 bucks it cost. I can assure you that you will be awestruck after playing through it.

Every system has total shit on it. Every system also has gold.

The Wii's RPG selection is a bit weak right now, and I probably wouldn't recommend it to BBQ right now, but it's a fine system. Not to mention the Virtual Console, which has plenty of classic RPGs on it.

Already out, BBQ might enjoy non-exclusives Baroque and Chocobo's Dungeon, which are love-em-or-hate-em dungeon crawlers; and also non-exclusive (I think) Dokapon Kingdom, a party RPG.

Things look good on the RPG front in '09. SE has FFCC: Crystal Bearers coming out right after Duke Nukem Forever; and Dragon Quest X too. The makers of Odin Sphere are making Muramasa, a game which is similar in design, but set in a mythological Japan-- from a friend who has played Odin Sphere, he said the gameplay looks much tighter in trailers for Muramasa. Arc Rise Fantasia and Rune Factory Frontier also look promising, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Of course, there's a lot more out there than just RPGs, too.

Your right, I just think the Wii has more of it.

indeed. But the quality of a system's library isn't measured in the RATIO of Shit::GoodShit, but the amount of GoodShit. Frankly, all of the consoles this generation are lacking in that department, and yes, probably the Wii most of all. This is worsened by the fact that there aren't clear and obviously HUGE improvements in *gameplay* on new consoles. Think about the difference in playstyle in MGS and MGS2 -- the hardware's power added so much. Now, pretty much anything you can do on a next gen console you can do on a PS2; albeit not as pretty. This is the Wii's big advantage; going for creativity over power, and it works quite well with good execution.

I have a short list of Wii games coming out soon which I am really looking forward to. MadWorld, The Conduit, Muramasa, Wii Sports Resort, etc. The list gets pretty long if I include everything I'm HOPING is good, and not just expecting, but anyway. Almost all of these games are unique. Where they lack unique gameplay, they have unique style. Where they lack unique style, they have unique gameplay. The most "Normal" games I have for my Wii are Lego Star Wars and Twilight Princess, both of which are still quality games. Of course if you just go into a store and say 'oh, this looks neat!' you're going to wind up disappointed more often than not, on any platform. But if you look, there's plenty of quality titles out there on each system, and the Wii and PS3 are just fine from a hardware perspective.

Reminds me of when I was in Toys R Us right before christmas. The lady standing behind me wanted some DS game for her granddaughter. Something like a barbie beach house vacation type game and the store had 2 different types of it and one was sold out. The Toys R Us employee came up trying to help her find the game and told her "I don't understand why kids want these games that they're only gonna play for about 5 mins, and they cost as much as the normal great games do." One of my coworkers was deciding on a game to get her son for his DS and I told her to get him Pokemon Diamond or Pearl. She said that he was hooked and playing it non stop vs some cartoon game that he wanted her to get lol.

that problem will get better with time as people start to look at games as art, alongside movies, music, and books; instead of as toys.
