Nintendo Patent Reveals Potential Paradigm Shift in Design - Kotaku Australia

"Nintendo is working on a gameplay system meant to ease the pain of completing a difficult game, without watering it down so much that it turns hardcore gamers off.

The new system, described in a patent filed by Nintendo Creative Director Shigeru Miyamoto on June 30, 2008, but made public today, looks to solve the issue of casual gamers losing interest in a game before they complete it, while still maintaining the interest of hardcore gamers.

The solution would turn a game into a full-length cut scene of sorts, allowing players to jump into and out of the action whenever they wanted. But when played this way, gamers would not be able to save their progress, maintaining the challenge of completing a game without skipping or cheating. It would also allow players to bring up in-game hint videos and skip directly to particular scenes in games.

While the patent doesn't describe how the automated gameplay (referred to as "digest moving image" in the patent) would be presented to gamers, either as a true cut-scene or as a recorded play-through, it does state that the playthrough will likely come from a game developers playing of the game.

In a game, this new play style would be broken up into three options: Game, digest and scene menu, according to the patent.

Game allows gamers to play the game in the normal way, though they can bring up video hints whenever they get stuck. These hints will appear in a screen that pops up in the top right corner of the screen.

Digest allows gamers to watch a video of a game developers play through of the game, which lays out the storyline and "flow of the scenario" from beginning to the end. At any time a player can press a button to jump into the action of the scene currently being shown. This is done by loading game saves downloaded automatically through a network.

Players will start the scene with the appropriate character attribute boosts and items for that part of the game. Saving is not allowed in digest mode.

The scene menu allows gamers to skip directly to a specific scene to play, without having to watch the digest or load a saved game.

This patent, if implemented correctly, could successfully help gaming make the leap from narrative fun, to something more open-ended and free range, the first real sandbox video game.

Imagine being able to play a game with all of the benefits of characters, story and goals, but without having to spend 10 to 20 hours of your life to enjoy doing so.

Of course, that's the best case scenario. The worst, is that this turns gaming into an interactive cut-scene, removing all of pleasure of achievement from gaming and instead turning it into a glorified demo.
    "

NOOOOOOOOOOO EVERY GAME IS NOW GONNA BE MGS WITH FEATURE FILM CGI IN IT! *Prepares to die from a flame.* J/K It sounds interesting but I want to know if this will cause games to take longer to come out since they'd have to implement this new system in every game.

No, this just means you don't even have to play the game anymore....at all.

You can just sit back and watch, or skip ahead to whatever part you like and play from there.

      Seriously....this is dumb.

You say that, yet I'm sure people will use it.

Maybe this'll encourage the return of "Nintendo hard" games. Ah, if only.

I can totally see the up side of this. There are several games my boyfriend enjoys and is good at... except the parts where he has to pause and pass the controller to me. And honestly, there have been plenty of games that I've really enjoyed except for the hours and hours of banging my head against the wall with one specific mini-game or whatnot when I just can not make my thumbs do what they're supposed to.

As long is it's a conscious choice, and there's some differentiation between finishing the section/game with the "help" and without, I don't see the problem. Let someone try this stupid fishing mini-game three times and then, yes, willingly sacrifice the most awesome ending and perfect score in order to move on and see the rest of the game.

It hasn't entirely gone away, they're just called "Advance Wars" and "Fire Emblem" now. And the Metroid Prime series.

Fuck up once, make one bad move in Fire Emblem and they send the archers after your Pegasus Knight or Wyvern Lord , I swear. They like their battle system unforgiving there.

Anyway, I don't think its an entirely bad idea. I mean, there are people who live off guides and online guides anyway for an entire game and then there are those that don't. Neither philosophy has budged for years. I don't look for hints until after I finish a game once at minimum and I'll probably never stray from that approach.

I'm not a fan of putting hints in the game, though. That caters just a little too much to casual players. Just because you want to feel included in a gaming discussion and feel trendy for being a gamer doesn't mean come at the expense of challenge.

That's true, but those are strategy games, which are fine, really, but I was thinking more along the lines of action games. Something that requires "tweak skills," reflexes, finger dexterity, whatever you want to call it. Metroid Prime is more along those lines but there aren't enough Metroid games in the world to keep me satisfied and the more recent 2D ones have been a lot stricter with the mechanisms that previously allowed insane sequence breaking (wallkicks and bomb jumps.)

Also, this isn't exactly what I was hoping for but I think it's about time people started implemented part-skipping features more often into games. Especially RPGs. RPGs should come with an unlockable Fast Forward button after clearing the game and should let you skip any cutscene, scripted event or dialogue by default. There's no real reason to make the player sit through an event he's seen way too many times, mashing the OK button until it's over.

But I digress. Lazy people will be lazy - you'll never get someone who doesn't understand the point of a challenge in games to man up and try harder. There is only one choice for the lazy gamer: quitting. This lets the lazy/unskilled/unwilling gamer finish the game, so it does its intended job.

Challenge-driven gamers will know better and won't abuse it, relying on it minimally (hey, games can have truly unreasonable segments at times) if at all. I don't see the harm in it.

That is a pretty interesting set up they are thinking about creating. Didn't they do the skip ahead thing in the new Alone in the Dark?

I don't consider myself a casual gamer by any means, but there are times when I'm playing a game and it gets so frusterating or hard that I wish I could just skip it so that I can keep my cool... But I have to admit that pushing through and finaly finishing that really difficult part makes me feel so amazing that I have to tell everyone about it!

It has its pros and cons, I know my fiance would play more games if she could skip the hard parts.... /shrug

This and the original Final Fantasy are destined to go hand-in-hand.

Fun fact: when playing the Dawn of Souls remake (nowhere near as atrocious considering they wiped the lolDnD Magic system), I actually referenced 8-bit Theater at one point to figure out where I was supposed to go next. 8-bit Theater, guys. It doesn't get much sadder than that, especially for a remake.

Yeah, because they really laid it out for you on Yunaleska and the Monster Arena. Ultima and Omega might have been pushovers, but they were by no means the ultimate bosses, just a stepping stone towards customizing weapons to be insanely powerful.

Seriously, "Final Boss" no longer means "ultimate boss." Its been like that since FFVII. Get over it. There are harder bosses in each FF if you deign it worth the effort to persue them. SE does not leave the hardcore behind in Final Fantasy, they just made the main quest a bit easier. If they had no ultimate bosses to persue, then you'd have a right to complain. But they do and they're optional.

There is nothing wrong with FFX's design, it has by far one of the strongest battle systems in the entire series. Know what you're talking about before you go about "fixing" things.

I think he was talking about how you're railroaded throughout the plot despite the whole game up to Zanarkand being one big flashback.

And I found Yunalesca easy because the first time i did it I ran out of MP for Yuna so I couldn't get rid of the zombie status and keep everyone alive without spamming haste on Rikku XD

EDIT: I did find the penultimate boss very challeging though and I liked how FFX actually made you think when fighting bosses instead of going "lollimitbreakszpamz" like all the other FF games.

The game was still shoe-box-filled-with-dirt easy. And Yojimbo can 1-shot Nemesis Weapon so ... yah. Bend over FFX. That was the running gag at it's release actually, that it was basically an interactive movie and I still find that holds true.

In it's defense however, Blitzball was one of the sweetest minigames ever. I just wish it had been a little more balanced; Without the Ject shot it can be damned hard but with it the thing is too easy (never mind the V2...)

<. < why doesn't SE just release a Blitzball game? I would LOVE to play Blitzball online with other people omg. All other sports be damned.

You know saying that it was nothing more than an interactive movie would mean that you wouldn't have to put much time into it. I put over 140 hours into FFX, thats not an interactive movie. While I will say that when I first started up the game and ran into massive cutscenes (zone, cs, zone, cs, zone, cs), I thought "damn this is like an interactive movie". But once I got past the initial cs spammage, there was a great deal of game underneath there. And Blitzball, we've been crying for a Blitzball game for years. I absolutely loved it but there are quite a few people that didn't.
