  • Wild Arms

I downloaded Wild Arms near a year ago off of Playstation Network (was only $6 so I went for it without knowing anything about the series other than it has lots of sequels).

Anyway, so far I just got past Arctica Castle. I think I'm almost done! I don't think it's the greatest game ever, but definately worth $6. Also I'm interested in getting Wild Arms 2, but I am hoping they put it on PSN as well. I know they did in Japan, but anyone have any word on a stateside release for it?

    Re: Wild Arms

Weird they'd put up the PSX version and not the PS2 remake, Wild Arms Alter Code F, which is a much better version of the game. But then, that's probably because Agetec had a hand in remaking/localizing/publishing Wild Arms Alter Code F and they'd probably want royalties.

WA:ACF isn't exactly easy to find, either, I only just lucked out this week and found a copy.

I think between Alter Code F and and perhaps Wild Arms 4 and 5, you're really not missing much. What I played of WA3 was positively wretched.

      Re: Wild Arms

The original was my first PSX game, so I'm alittle biased, but it's one of my favorite RPG's. The remake is even better as it fixes up alot of things from the original, like why Rudy doesn't use his ARM's for normal attacks.

I'd strongly recommend getting Alter Code F after you beat the original, like right after. I pretty much like everything they did with that game and what they changed from the original(except Zed's original theme, believe they changed that).

        Re: Wild Arms

I never even realized there WAS a remake of it...

I used to own the original, it had a lot going for it but omg did it ever have a lot of bugs. I played 3 for a while as well but only rented it the one time. I dunno, I never really got far enough into any of the games to really get into the series. The spell creation system in the 1st game was awesome and if I'm not mistaken laid the groundwork for one my favorite series, Grandia.

          Re: Wild Arms

Wild Arms didn't get the most glowing reviews but it was one of my favorite rpgs. My son wouldn't play it at first because the reviews didn't rave about it but when he finally did, he loved it too. We've always bought every Wild Arms game since then and there was a stinker. I also enjoyed Wild Arms 2 and would give it an 8. Wild Arms 3 dropped the ball for me and I'd give it a 6. Wild Arms 4 bounced back, imo. I would give it a 7.5-8. Wild Arms 5 was another 8. Alter Code F was a great remake and definately worth playing even if you did play the original. I'd give it a 9 (but that might be tainted by my nostalgia ). And the PSP one, XF, went down the strategy rpg path. I don't even consider it a Wild Arms because of this though because it such a big departure but thats my personal outlook. Still, it was a pretty darn decent strat game and I'd give it a 7.5.

So... which ones are remakes of which? Man I got so many old games I want to track down on Ebay since there's no other way to get some of them.

That's how I snagged Lunar SSSC, though I'm not sure if I want to try and get Eternal Blue. *sigh* I really sucks that Working Designs went under resulting in Lunar 3 for PS3 being canceled ... seriously not cool.

I wonder what the next Wild Arms will be like? Remind me, is there any sort of hall-mark for the series other than the frontier setting?

              Re: Wild Arms

Working Designs went under because of Sony's Quality Assurance bullshit.

"Oh, its 2D and not by Nippon Ichi, Atlus or Square-Enix? We'll try it work it in next season, but not for now, too many cool 3D things coming out right now. Maybe we can work it in if you make it a budget title and lose half the money on your efforts."

That's basically how it happened. WD put lots of work into games that SCEA would cockblock in the QA department for whatever excuse they felt like making at the time. There as a bit of bad blood over it since it happened with more than just Lunar games, if I recall correctly.

Sad thing about Wild Arms: Alter Code F?

Its a Sony first-party title, but they didn't have the heart to publish it in the US, so they had Agetec step up to the plate to take the risk instead. Not that Sony was the only one guilty of that tactic last gen, Nintendo and MS did it at least once as well. Sony also did it to Lifeline, Konami published it instead.

Not really that weird, as they don't have PS2 games on PSN. They only have PS1 games to download.

And it couldn't have happened to more deserving guys, either. Sometimes I think I'd rather not have seen games picked up at all then seen the hack jobs WD did on them, turning every male character into a drooling lech, and inserting bathroom humor into pretty much everything. And they *really* did not get the concept of "comic relief does not go in this scene".

But when you think about the fact that some of those same games could have been localized by a company like Atlus that would really respect them... well, good riddance to WD is all I can say. (Imagine WD getting their hands on the Persona series. <shudder>)

As for Wild Arms, I've always thought they're a lot of fun - I don't see why some people are so down on 3, either. But it's been a while since I played it. IMO if there was any game that was a letdown it was 4, which got rid of all the tool puzzles that had set WA apart from other rpgs to some extent. The combat system was interesting, though.

The only remake is of Wild Arms 1, which is Wild Arms Alter Code F. And I suppose the combination of the Frontier setting + the mystery of ARMs + Tools and they're usefulness in puzzles and such is the appeal for Wild Arms.

And Eternal Blue is a very good game. Nall doesn't sound like a little girl anymore(although Ruby takes that spot...) and the combat system is alot better. Story wise prolly at the very least equal to, up to personal opinion really.

While at this age I'm not exactly HAPPY with the translation of WD games, at the age I played them they were still my favorite. I'd never heard of the Lunar series or Arc the Lad series if it weren't for them, and those are arguably some of my favorite games for the PS1.

This same bullshit is what nearly blocked both Mega Man 8 and Castlevania, SotN. Much as I love the playstation SONY's business practices truly fuck me off some times, especially now that they are the apparent Cause of Death for WD...

What version of Lunar did YOU play O_o? Kyle was the only semi-perverted character save that 1 NPC you get one of the Bromides from (the town where you have to capture a pink puff) but even then wasn't that bad. Actually he was the life of the party IMO and that game itself is legendary.

Now, I never did play Vanguard Bandits so if that's what you're referring to I can't comment. Lunar 2 was a big disappointment from the 1st as well but come on >.>
