  • Electronic Gaming Monthly is no more!

I was reading in the Science/Technology section on Google, this morning, that EGM along with 1UP.com have both been sold to Hearst Corp. (Ziff-Davis owned them prior to this) Apparently 1UP.com will still be around for a bit, but EGM will cease publishing as of their January 2009 issue.

That leaves us with 3 Gaming publications, Play (my personal fave), Game Informer, and Gamepro.

I actually liked EGM, not so much for it's reviews which I think have been sort of ...mediocre at times, but for it's mix of humor and the gaming world.

    Any thoughts?

People play games and read magazines?

    What?

They do realize that there are internets now, right?

People read the mags for what remaining exclusive information can be found within them. Play is extremely good at doing real, in-depth developer interviews and getting access to art concepts, which they in turn use for some beautiful page spreads Their reviews can be out there at times, but its because they tend to look at things from a more artistic viewpoint.

Game Informer also does a decent job of getting exclusive interviews with developers, but usually they steer it toward hyping an upcoming game. Still they give attention to games that might otherwise not get the hype, which is also a strong point for Play.

Gamepro is a game magazine for kids, really. It came before EGM, its survived EGM, which was a gaming rag for teenagers.

EGM really had nothing special left because IGN does everything they do, except that they actually bother to do in-depth reviews as opposed to the features and reviews EGM did, which were geared to people with ADD.

Honestly, I've got ADHD, and I love IGN and never cared for EGM.

So could be they just didn't have any damn market at all.

Is Nintendo Power still out there? I remember I used to have subscriptions to Gamepro, Nintendo Power, and EGM back when I was a kid. Memories..../cry

Printed media is an endangered species. Personally I don't expect any publications except for (some) books to last for much longer (maybe a decade or so.)

I'd so much rather carry one or two flat letter-sized e-readers instead of carrying paper around.

I own an e-book and I still purchase magazines and newspapers. Not all magazines and newspapers are available for d/l to my e-book. It's something that just hasn't taken hold as quickly and widely as they thought it would. I would love to see e-books come down in price so that more people could afford them and the printed medium would leave less of an enviromental impact. But, I don't think that is going to happen for quite some time.

And if someone needs more than one e-book, they aren't doing it right. My e-book has expandable memory so at the most I'd have to carry around some tiny memory sticks. To have to buy an additional e-book would be friggin expensive.

As for subscriptions, I am subscribed to about 90% of the gaming magazines out there.....plus several other mags such as National Geographic, Popular Science, Smithsonian, etc. (My mail lady would like to shoot me!) Play is also my favorite all system magazine. I find I can count on their reviews more than I can a more immature publication. Personally, EGM was on the low end of the stick for me. I'm not upset one bit that its gone, I'm just wondering about my subscription that was until 2011.

I think books, manga and comic books will be around for a good, long time. Reading extensively on PC just isn't good for your eyes, plus ebooks don't have that new book smell.

Apparently I have Picard's Syndrome. I don't see it as a problem. If its good enough for Captain Picard, then its good enough for me.

Same goes for old books. Old, musty smells would be bad in any other instance, but the smell of old books is just terrific.

Quite frankly I'm surprised the magazine and newspaper industries are still around.

I'd give 'em another 10-30 years TOPS.

Books will be replace eventually I'm sure. Maybe not in our life times or for several generations but eventually paper and pen will be obsolete.

But what will transcend the interent? oooooooo.....

I don't think we're going to replace the internet, but evolve and expand it. We'll get newer and faster ways of connecting, bigger pipes. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone set up national, and then global, ad-hoc networks, where every device handles data (like the OLPC, for example). It's cheaper for corporations to transmit data over p2p, and they'll invest in filling the gaps in the countryside if it's still net-cost cheaper than paying ISPs. We'll also need new technologies when space travel beyond the moon starts happening.

I don't see anything really replacing the internet. We'll probably get to a point where the internet is a Ship of Theseus, where all of our modern standards have been replaced and made unusable (IPv4 being a great example to watch), but it's still basically the internet to everyone that uses it.
