Sorry to those of you that have read this already but here was my response to the article:

Mal, you really should read all of the article first. LOL When I read the top portion, I immediately figured it was not what it seemed. But now everyone is going to jump on the "OMGZORZ FFXI IS DEAD!" bandwagon. My guess (I haven't finished the article yet) is that they will let FFXI run along side Rapture until it is no longer profitable. As soon as it starts getting close to going in the red, they'll pull it. I believe they think its a POSSIBILITY that Rapture may EVENTUALLY replace FFXI.

Take the place of? You mean replace FFXI? Well, not quite.

A lot of the translation work I do involves quarterly financial reports just like this one, so this is a very interesting topic for me and I hope I can give you some insight beyond the scary blue font. These slideshows are accompanied with an oral presentation, and without that, we’re already missing a huge portion of the picture. So right off the bat, I would advise against taking that one sentence and running with it.

EDIT: Also, the wording and the presentation (which wasn't seen by the translators) could mean for Rapture to replace FFXI FINANCIALLY for the company. I talked to my JP friend about this recently and he was talking about the financial climate in Japan currently. Attitudes are shifting about how to deal with the current state of affairs in the country. They are feeling the pinch too. So eliminating a game that is currently profitable, in fact, the most profitable in that division (see JP Button article) would be foolish especially in the current climate. I believe thats probably along the lines of what they meant.

THIS, THIS, AND MORE OF THIS:

Rather than worry over FFXI’s impending doom as a new project looms on the horizon, I think what we, as dedicated FFXI players, should take from this report is that FFXI is a success. A damn good success for Square Enix. It became the foundation for the growth of their Online Gaming efforts, and produced enough confidence to allow for the development of a new, large-scale online title. Rest assured, as the Developers are often quoted as saying, Final Fantasy XI will live on as long as there are fans to support it.

Was just talking with my husband about this and I brought up this point...

If you owned a store with a beverage section and you put out a beverage that started out selling like hotcakes but eventually it died down. It was still the most profitable beverage in that section but just not as hot as it used to be. Now you knew a new beverage was coming out from the same company, would you just take the old profitable beverage off the shelf entirely and replace it with the new one? Or would you put both beverages up against one another so you'd still make money off the old and see how well the new one would do?

Like my husband said Coca-Cola learned this lesson the hard way with their "New Coke" when they pulled Coca-Cola (the stuff called Classic now) off the shelves. They shot themselves in the foot BIG TIME. I don't think SE is that stupid.

Reading this topic felt like a waste of time after the first few pages thanks to potem, but TGM made my day when she said she liked FF8 more. Big to you, just don't tell Balfree. He'll come after me with burnt muffins to chuck at me ;_;

That's why I think an VIII MMOG would be good, there was a lot about the world left to explore. Especially if the game was set years before the destruction of Trabia Garden and Ultimecia, like shortly after Edea created the SeeDs.

And having events related to the Lunar Cry that would coincide with lunar phases on earth would be good awesome too. (also /nod Persona 3)

Or having some missions involving what happened after the events of the game, and that sort of thing.

Yes, I remember something along those lines too. It wasn't going to be a FF and it wasn't going to be a spinoff or FFXI either. It was going to stand alone and "compliment" FFXI or some hooey. But you know SE, they talk out one side of their mouth...

This is because FF8 never let you actually explore the world.

It was "Go here. ok, now go there. Ok. Ok. You got the airship? Good, good, I'm going to seal off all of the towns so you can't actually do anything but level up and do three dungeons. have fun."

Great ideas with a horrible execution was basically FF8's thing. That's why it's such a love-it-or-hate-it game, either you love the concepts or you hate the product.
