Because HD doesn't refer to 'the highest possible resolution'; people have made displays made up of multiple monitors that go up to around 13000 x 6000 or something like that. High Def just means above the old standard. Sort of like how a Veyron can go hundreds of miles per hour, but you'd still call police chasing someone around at 60mph a high speed chase.
The reason for consoles not doing higher HD is largely because of graphics power. Keep in mind that the 360 uses DVDs, and can display HD video just fine. All Blu-Ray provides there is more space for more detailed textures. Remember that consoles don't give the same sort of flexibility that computers do. For example, I've seen estimates that the Wii could handle at most 720; it's currently limited to 480p. It's not as simple as just saying "I want the window to be X wide by Y tall, make it so".

I know consoles are alot less flexible but you've seen what they can handle, no actually we haven't because the developers still haven't pushed the consoles to their limits and thats why I say why doesn't everyone make 1080p games instead of stopping at 720p or just upscaling, I guess it could just be down to experience but we won't really know untill they make a game to push the systems to its limits. I wonder what crysis would do to PS3's when they release it
Malacite, you're pretty confused about the whole 1080p deal. Most of the games that say "1080p" on the back of the box mean that they are capable of outputting in 1080p. On 360 this is the case for all games; on PS3 most games are able to scale the resolution to output in 1080p (and there's no real difference if you're already running on a 1080p TV; the TV generally does the scaling for you because that's how it works best).
There are a few games this gen however that do run in native 1080p; these games are made for display on 1080p sets and there's a noticeable difference in the resolution. There are quite a few PS3 games that run in native 1080p (Gran Turismo 5, WipEout HD, all the Pixeljunk games, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, White Knight Chronicles) and a handful of games that run in native 1080p on 360 (Portal, Feeding Frenzy 2, NBA Street Homecourt). However, there doesn't seem to be any moderation in advertising what games run native and what games upscale; regardless of how they do it, if the game outputs either type of 1080p there are boxes out there for games on both consoles that simply say "1080p supported." MGS4 does not run in native 1080p despite saying "1080p on the box," and there's little to no difference in visual quality between running the game in 720p and running it on 1080p on your TV.
Native 1080p is a trade-off and it takes a very skilled developer to make good use of it without sacrificing other parts of the complete package. In my opinion, for simpler arcade games it should be a standard to output in native 1080p. Most major devs avoid it however, even though both consoles are capable of outputting in native 1080p, as it is easier to maintain a solid framerate at lower native resolution (just like choosing lower resolutions for games on your PC so the game will run better) or they prefer to focus on other aspects of the game that are just as demanding on the hardware. For all intents and purposes 720p is the standard for HD consoles this gen; and a number of games (Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, HAZE) run in sub-HD native res, even below 720p.
In the end it really doesn't matter; Halo 3 proves that games running in sub-HD can still look great and native-1080p games don't all necessary look absolutely beautiful. It's up to the developer and how they choose to use the resources they have to deliver the most compelling game.
No, FFXIII won't look distinctively better on PS3 than 360. They may have to make the 360 version multiple discs (I wouldn't know; I'm not making it) but that has nothing to do with the output resolution of the game and the 360 and PS3 consistently deliver comparable visuals in pretty much all multi-platform games these days. Output resolution isn't tied to DVD discs or Blu-ray discs, it's tied to the players. A DVD can output in 1080p if the player (i.e., 360) is capable of it. Some DVD players can output DVD movies in 1080p also...but it's upscaled. Not that it matters, since there's no way FFXIII will run in native 1080p on either console. It looks to be simply too demanding in terms of texture quality and polygon-pushing and I don't think the team is technically skilled enough to have such a visually impressive game outputting in native 1080p.
I've kinda gone on long enough, but my point is there's no specific rule that ties DVD to a native resolution. In addition, there are only a few 360 games that output in native 1080p compared to a larger number of PS3 games that do so. And finally, PS3 developers (or 360 devs in this case, it's all the same) aren't specifically lazy if they choose not to output in native 1080p, they're just choosing wisely about what will work best for the game they want to deliver. You may want to read up more about how output resolution works in gaming this generation if you're still confused. And if you don't even have a 1080p TV...all this means nothing.

To be honest I think they'll do what happened with ff7-9 on the ps1, improve on the quality of the graphics every game, that is if they release another FF on the PS3
No problem. If you do own a 1080p TV, do keep in mind that some games will actually look and run better in 720p and don't like being scaled up. Call of Duty 4 on PS3 is one of these, I believe.
Time will tell with FFXIII. For all we know it could end up looking better on the 360. Square Enix hasn't yet proven whether or not they're masters of multiplatform development like Capcom is (check out the RE5 comparison on Gametrailers, both games look exactly the same. Bravo, Capcom) and whether Crystal Tools can do the job right, but we'll find out in a couple years when the 360 and PS3 versions ship stateside.
Closer on-topic, here's some details from Jump Festa 2009, which happened yesterday. An extended FFvXIII TGS trailer was shown, and completely new FFXIII footage (with a number of real-time cutscenes and the very first real-time battle footage) was shown. This is all translated by fans so there may be one or two minor translation issues.
FFXIII
-The 3 main characters revaled so far (the ones we see in the existing trailers) are Lightning, the heroine of the game, Snow, the tall, gun-wielding man, and Oerba dia Vanille (may be referred to as "Vanilla" in other translations, but this is her full name), the pigtailed girl who appears to be a member of the rare Sera race. As previously mentioned, Lightning is not the main character's real name but it is what she's known as. It's unknown whether or not Snow is also a similar "code name."
-Three new characters are revealed at Jump Festa, a young boy wearing goggles whose name is unkown, a man with green clothing and an afro, and an Oriental looking woman with a bob-style haircut, who looks up to Lightning as an "older sister figure."
-The footage shown begins prior to the game's debut trailer. Lightning is held prisoner in a straight-jacket and she and Snow escape.
-Apparently the two were trying to defend Oerba who was taken captive. Lightning punches Snow straight in the face for letting her get caught (yes, she's that badass).
-Following their confrontation the battle sequence initiates. It's said to be "almost as seemless as FFXII" and it is confirmed to use a form of turn-based ATB system, though spectators claim that it's "more tactical than FFX and a lot like FFX-2 on steroids."
-"The quickness and motion in the battle is the most furious and heated FF has ever seen. They were thinking along the lines of FF7AC style it seems."
-It is confirmed that you can jump in battles, though it's unknown if it has any effect on attacks or if it's only used for evasion. Lightning fights with a powerful gunblade and has both ranged and melee attacks.
-Following the battle, Snow picks up a bazooka from one of the dead soldiers and frees Oerba. He hands her a machine gun and she introduces herself to the two.
-Another battle occurs. (Prepare for weirdness) Lightning summons Shiva off a Blu-ray disc (no joke). If you've seen scans before you'll see that Shiva in FFXIII is actually a pair of twin sisters that combine into a motorcycle. (Yep) She freezes all the soldiers and then runs them over. (Told you it was weird)
-All characters are now voiced in the new trailer but it is unknown who the voice actors are.
-Still labeled as 2009, PS3-exclusive release in Japan.
FFvXIII
-No details yet, other than that the conversation between The Prince and Stella is extended. Real-time footage.
-The game is still being labeled as a worldwide PS3 exclusive. No release date mentioned.
Advent Children Complete
-New footage shown. No new info otherwise, date for Japan is still March 2009 with FFXIII playable demo included.
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
-Game is delayed from February to vague "Spring 2009."
EDIT:
Here are some new FFXIII scans from today's issue of V-JUMP, with new realtime gameplay screens. IMO, from what little we see the game seems about on par with MGS4, which is impressive for a multi-platform title. LOL @ Oerba's goofy looking pose though.
This game has really impressive character designs. In my opinion it may be Nomura's best work to date.

I do, a 1080p Aquaos 48". New model too (or at the time it was anyway) last January. Only cost me $1800 on a 2-year plan too. Haven't regretted it for a second :3
And yes Capcom is damn good at that (they sure as hell suck in a lot of other departments though). DMC 4 is practically flawless on both consoles. Speaking of RE5 though, Capcom can kiss my ass on that game for one thing;
Why no moving and shooting? If they're going to step away from Survival Horror (which I'm not fond of btw) and more into an action genre with RE, at least allow us to move while aiming and shooting. They could learn a thing or two from the Dead Space team. The combat in that game was awesome, best in it's genre IMO. I mean seriously, who the hell is going to stand still to shoot when surrounded by zombies and other BOW's?
RE5 still feels very much like RE4. Not being able to move and shoot is a pain if you're used to played Dead Space and Gears, but I was actually shocked and pleased with how familiar it felt. To some it may seem like a problem and I can understand that, but if keeping mechanics closer to the older games is what it takes to keep that true Resident Evil feeling (which it does flawlessly despite being a co-op game), then so be it. In my opinion it's a far more exciting co-op experience than Army of Two and Gears 2 which I previously thought it would be comparable to. Instead it's pretty much RE4 exactly (a good thing) with perfectly integrated co-op elements (a very good thing).

So I spent forever digging through pages only to finally do a search and find it right off. http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/new...ases-norm.html
So this only applies to the games fewer people want to play?
Are they really thinking its going to be 2010 before ffxiii gets to the states?
I RNG 75 I WAR 37 I NIN 38 I SAM 50 I Woodworking 92+2
I think it applies to smaller scale projects (i.e., Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean 4).
FFXIII's worldwide release is being held back on PS3 to wait for the completion of the 360 port, which isn't being started until the PS3 version launches in Japan. If you're expecting a quick and speedy localization I'll tell you now to hold your breath. There's no way SE will be able to do a full port and a localization in less than a year. You'll want to be sensible about this; don't expect to be playing FFXIII until late 2010 at the earliest.

Boo.
Oh well, don't know what I was expecting.
I can't remember, are the PS3 games region-locked? Thats more than enough time to learn Japanese and import a game.
I RNG 75 I WAR 37 I NIN 38 I SAM 50 I Woodworking 92+2
No, there's no region encoding on Blu-ray games. It's gonna be a very long wait so I don't feel too bad about importing Advent Children Complete for the demo. It's supposed to be the first 2 hours or so of the game.
But hey, if they surprise us and FFXIII somehow makes it out here in the middle of 2010, we can all be pleasantly surprised together. Personally however, with the amount of major franchises that get worldwide releases these days (look at big games like MGS4 and RE5) it's a damn shame Square Enix still doesn't want to expedite their localization for their western fans. With the way the Japanese market is going, I think worldwide FFXIII sales will be pretty evened out compared to the norm of much-heavier Japanese sales.
