Re: Sonic: Night of the Werehog (short film)

Back in my day when Sega was the good old Sega, Sonic the Hedgehog and Altered Beast were two entirely different games, and we had to pay for them separately, none of this new-fangled mashup business, just throwing around game themes all willy-nilly. And we had to walk 3 miles in the snow to Funcoland, uphill both ways!

I understand what you're saying Bal. Sonic was a great game that had a basic objective to it. Because of its simplicity, it was appealing to a broad audience. But people get tired of the same old thing over and over and thats why they "tweak" it. Sometimes the tweaks work but many times they are simply too much. In the end, the basic simple aspect warps into this convoluted mess. It reminds me of cooking, usually a few simple seasonings make a great dish.

That has nothing to do with the fact that the core Mario games (Super Mario Bros. series, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy) were works of art in their own way. (Granted, you could complain about Super Mario Bros. 2 actually being that Doki Doki Panic game, debate about the Lost Levels title, and say that Sunshine was kind of iffy for bringing nothing innovative to the table, much like the Gamecube itself. To say that they weren't good games, though, would be boldfaced lying.)

And heck, even the Mario Kart series was quite notable among the Mario spinoffs (though, I have to say, it has really been in a decline recently; the fanbase is partially to blame, of course, but I can not honestly think of a better entry in the series than the original Super Mario Kart, and screw Mario Kart DS and yer new-dangfangled Bullet Bills and such, ROB drivers, and snaking for anyone who says otherwise.)

            Who said they weren't?

But what about the other side? The countless ridiculous attempts at making another buck, doesn't this devalue the object as a whole? More does not equal better.

Do you not feel even slightly "betrayed" that your loved things are also weapons of mass suction?

            oh lawd <.<

            Atleast for me, things lose value when it becomes cheap (duh?), the olden days were good, but now all that's left are memories ; _ ;

Or I could just ignore the outside world and stick to my super nintendo.

You said Mario had "failed." I was providing glaringly obvious counter-evidence. The obvious money-making spinoffs don't count if you just pretend they don't exist. >.>

I just realized that I couldn't play a civil game of Super Mario Kart with TGM, as we'd both be bickering incessantly about who would get to play Yoshi.

                      >.> I have been there before already, and it is not a pretty place for either party.

. . . We could race each other in Time Trials, though!

All I know is that the titles to games these days could stand to be a bit more creative.

                        Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
                        Godzilla Unleashed
                        Sonic Unleashed

I don't think we have enough games "unleashed" yet. Need moar!

                          Hello Kitty Unleashed?

                          No, Hello Kitty... UNLEASHED!

You say the word often enough and it starts to sound rather surreal. Unleashed... unleashed...

That was pretty damn awesome! Excellent CGI work, always been a fan of it-- and their expressions and movement are top-notch. Didn't fully understand it though, a trio of ghosts living in a haunted house getting off on people's fear expressions? Especially the girl... but she's adorable anyway.

Only way I see it Sonic and the even more adorable furry thing (He a new character from Unleashed or somethin'?) just wanted to get outta the rain.

Still, I applaud. I always wondered if there was ever gonna be a CGI Sonic movie. Guess this is the closest we're gonna get.

Now to ponder which version of Sonic Unleashed is the best...

The problem isn't with tweaking and adding on to the Sonic formula, it's with totally ruining it. SEGA could just remake classic sonic levels in 3D (and yes, I know they have done this), release them, and we'd be in a good place.

People didn't get bored with Sonic because going fast and bouncing off the walls stopped being fun. There are plenty of gameplay styles that, despite being even MORE boring, and despite covering entire GENRES, are still hugely popular. FPS, for instance. They basically all consist of getting your enemy in the center of your screen and pulling the trigger, while trying to keep yourself out of the center of your enemy's screen. This formula hasn't really changed in a decade or so. And yet people will still buy one and enjoy it if it's good. When FPS fail, it's not because they aren't 'innovative', it's because they're not good games. Problems with controls, graphics, physics.

Re: Sonic: Night of the Werehog (short film)

Problem with Sonic is he's not a character that's as easy to reinvent as Mario. Mario can do just about anything - all because he wasn't really defined from the start. This makes him all the more easy to experiment with.

Sonic was defined from the start and once you moved Sonic away from speed and action, he ceases to be interesting. He's not a fit for the adventure genre, regardless of how many times they've thrown him at it. He's not someone you can make "edgy" since he's got no depth of character to start with.

And we've seen this failing in other characters and their genres. When Devil May Cry 2 came out, the game did not kick your ass six ways to Sunday and Dante went from this cocky bastard to this emo-/wrist-Cloud-Strife wannabe. Yeah, Dante is half-demon, but he's not fun when he tries to be "dark."

This is why they went back to cocky bastard Dante in a world where you get hammered at every turn if you don't know what you're doing. Cocky bastard Dante works and we don't want his world dumbed down.

Sonic is just a character you don't have to reinvent the wheel for. He was defined as "faster than Mario" pretty much from the start. He was created to compete with, but not be, Mario.
