    I agree.
And I've known a few. It never made any sense to me, but whatever.
Also known a few who just don't eat red meat or pork, and say so. Don't call themselves vegetarians, they just don't like beef or pork. Ofcourse I can't comprehend how someone could not like a hamburger or ribeye, but to each their own.

EDIT: And whats the story on beef broth and the like? Cool, not cool?

I don't really like the thought of it but if it doesn't have any meat in it and there's not much else to eat, I'll take it. Likewise, if I have no choice I'll take a slice of pepperoni pizza after meticulously removing every piece of pepperoni, or I'll take chinese and remove all the meat from the fried rice.

You could say it's a gray area I guess. Unless you're doing it because of health issues, the point is mostly not to support what we see as needless animal killing (i.e. if in this day and age I can live without meat, why not?) but the cows and chickens that are used to get milk and eggs get killed too. And there are other things that come from animals and they end up getting killed when they're no longer useful as well. Ruling out milk and eggs from my diet would be really damned hard, though. It's not that hard to find food that doesn't have meat in it but if I have to remove milk and eggs as well, it's hard to go eat out with some friends.

Re: Peta has a game for you!

There are people who cannot begin to fathom that some people do not eat ANIMALS.

Fish and Poultry and Meat are 3 distinct things, and I know for a fact that some folks out there don't really grasp the concept of vegetarianism/veganism... which causes much confusion in their little heads, I know a guy to whom I had to show what "vegetarian" meant using a dictionary, he kept saying "vegetarians dont eat RED MEAT" but somehow it was ok to eat birds or fish...

I've recently learned (or at least heard someone who claims to know...) that vegetarians do consume milk, eggs and other animal derivatives, but vegans are the ones who eat absolutely nothing that comes from animals.

This is correct. Being vegan doesn't just mean not eating any animal by-products though, you can't buy anything that's an animal by-product even if it's not consumable. E.g. no leather. It's a complete boycott to any industry that kills animals for profit.

Not really, Armando. When I was a vegan, it was purely dietary. These terms mean different things to different people. Like the above comment on broth-- some vegans/vegetarians won't eat anything that required animal products/meat to produce, some just don't want to eat the thing itself. You'll see a lot of variations depending on someone's motivations-- if they're in it for their personal health, they're probably far more willing to eat things that don't actually contain a product than if they're doing it for ethical reasons.

There's some concensus though, otherwise we wouldn't have definitions in Wikipedia, Merriam-Webster, etc. Hell, if there weren't some concensus about what these words mean there wouldn't be two distinct terms (Vegetarianism vs Veganism.) By definition, the only real requirement for vegetarianism is not to eat any kind of meat. If a vegetarian happens to not want to eat beef broth that doesn't suddenly change the definition.

You had a vegan diet, but to be truly vegan you would have to exclude all animal products from your lifestyle.

I am certainly among the people who could not imagine a life without consuming meat. The flesh contains the animal's soul, and without it there is no Highlander-esque transfer of power.

PROTIP: Check your sources. Wikipedia says that Veganism refers to a diet and a lifestyle. Merriam-Webster defines vegan as:

": a strict vegetarian who consumes no animal food or dairy products ; also : one who abstains from using animal products (as leather)"
                  (bold mine, italics theirs)

No, it doesn't. Merriam-Webster defines vegetarian (adj.) as " 2 : consisting wholly of vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, and sometimes eggs or dairy products". Not everyone interprets that the same way in relation to animal byproducts.

You had a vegan diet, but to be truly vegan you would have to exclude all animal products from your lifestyle.
Again, see above. Vegan can describe those with a vegan diet AS WELL as those with an entirely vegan lifestyle.

Then you haven't had properly cooked venison. Where I live its a fall ritual for our men to go to the woods and bring us back some meat. So we've learned lots of tips and tricks for cooking venison so that it tastes great. Kids are the biggest critics when it comes to food. Trying to get one to eat something out of the norm is damn near impossible. Well my kids loved venison and still to this day ask me to make it for them. Even my mother who absolutely hated it, had a venison roast at my house (without knowing) and loved it. Of course she was pissed off when she found out. LOL

See this makes no sense. Needless? Needless is hunting an animal, killing it, chopping off its head, and leaving the carcass to rot. They mount the heads and call themselves big game hunters. THAT is needless. Using animals to sustain your life is not needless.

Touché. Wikipedia's references disagree with that, but you're right in that it can be defined in more than one different way. I shouldn't have made such a sweeping statement. I still disagree with the point you were making about it being different things to different people though (the thing about some vegetarians/vegans eating/not eating this or that meaning that the definition changes from person to person.)

You don't need to eat animals to sustain your life or have a healthy nutrition. In that sense, it's needless. Moreover, I really don't like the notion of factory farming. If we were talking about simply hunting for sustenance, that's one thing, but that's not really how the average person gets their meat these days.

I don't mean any offense by this but I've had this discussion many times and ultimately neither party will change its mind. We can get a cool discussion going here if you want but it probably won't end with any kind of agreement or middle ground.

When you don't actually NEED to use them, yes, it is. Sort of like opening your mail with an antique sword. Sure, it serves a purpose, but it would be just as effective to use a box cutter from a dollar store.

I'm not going to be happy unless an animal died for each and every meal I have.

                                Happiness is a human need.
