Actually, is there anyone in America that really, really, really cares about Klonoa so much they'd want it Americanized?
I know a guy.
Also, according to the link, the localized version would be the fugly one on the left. The one on the right is the original design and how I hope he stays.
Even if the change wasn't so big, "localization" almost always ruins things. There's nothing about Klonoa that needs to be localized so that Americans can understand/enjoy the game as far as I know.

As far as I know, the only real difference that needs to exist between Japanese and English localizations is this:
In games, things originally put in Japanese - particularly in the gameplay context - tend to be very literal and sometimes that also happens in the diologue. They don't talk to the hero character so much as they're talking directly to the player. Western gamers really prefer being immersed in a story, so they don't want things phrased in such a way that it takes them out of the experience, so we want NPCs talking to our character and not us as the player. We want our gameplay explanations tied in to whatever we're seeing.
We don't need the characters re-invented visually. Though I think everyone liked Vaan better in FFTA 2 for having a shirt. Those that play Klonoa aren't going to be more drawn in to the experience for him losing his hat with Pac-Man on it.
And Bandai, of all companies, should know Americans prefer thier japanese stuff mostly the way it came.

So because the graphic is a little different its all of a sudden ruined? Holy crap, that's a rediculous statement. Japanophiles ftl.
Way to miss the point.
If they're going to change crap like this there's no telling what else they'll change. Not to mention the fact that he looks like a bat on the "localized" version. The fact that the one on the left doesn't seem any more western than the one on the right is already an indication that this can't go well.

I actually think the localized version looks better but that shouldn't be changed to begin with. It's pretty much pointless and enrages the fanbase. That has nothing to do japanese fanboys or what. Imagine that Portal was an euro game, and you're super excited for the NA release. Then they decide to make the protagonist a blonde with big breast heavily featured in the box and manual artwork because they "did a research" and decided that way the game would be more suited for the american gamer. It does not affect gameplay but was mostly pointless and makes your game feel less like the original version, because that's not what the developers wanted, that's what some damn marketing executive decided.

In all Honesty I don't really see that big of a issue at hand, because take a look at anime for a second, a lot of people can't really understand it if it is in full Japanese, so they fit it so we can understand it. (some stuff that they get translated into English may not even be what they are saying 100% of the time.)
Also, maybe the dude was thinking like they do on commercials. (they make the style of the commercial fit the country that it is broadcasting in.) So, maybe he thought it was a good idea to change the style in favor of fitting the American fashion style lol. But, let us all be real, I doubt that is the first time, or the last that they will change something to look different. Like look at the Japanese version of FFIII and the English version of FFIII..they look different, the same goes for trading card games etc. I remember having a Japanese Pikachu, and a English Pikachu, they Japanese one looks different then the english one. (not talking about the show the cards.)

lol not a lot really accept the English version has more color to it then the original Japanese FFIII (because it is older.)
Oh I almost forgot the did remake FFIII for the DS into full 3D, and changed how all the characters and stuff looked too.

I'm pretty sure a DS game isn't gonna get a color boost within a few months >.>
Or if you're talking about the original FFIII, it never got released here, period, so I don't see how it could get more of anything.

But that's not what they're doing at all. They're changing cosmetic aspects of the game in an attempt to appeal better to western audiences and failing horribly at it. It's not an issue of changing things we wouldn't understand. (Also, the Pokemon TCG cards had the same art for both Japanese and American versions.)
Like Haroldo said, they're mucking around with the game's appearance without need. Not to mention that this game is a remake of Door to Phantomile if I'm not mistaken, which was already released in the US back in 1998. They don't need to adapt the game any further than they already did in its original release.
P.S. In most cases, anime doesn't get localized, it gets dumbed down, censored and raped =P
