Re: Police say woman logged on virtual reality game and killed ex's avatar

It's not a crime. Players never actually own their account in an MMORPG. A more accurate comparison would be somebody breaking and entering into a hotel room you rented.

That has nothing to do with the crime.

Saying "he doesn't REALLY own it, he just pays for it and is in control of it." would be about as successful in court as saying the same thing about a timeshare. If you illegally use someone's timeshare, you're still abusing their property in some fashion. For that matter, you could say the same thing about a house with a mortgage.

        Which is a crime.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

HTTP Error 418 - I'm A Teapot - The resulting entity body MAY be short and stout.

Yes, but it's the hotels problem.

Instead of going to court with the possibility of 5 years in prison or a $5000 charge, her character should just be banned.

I think what Gyotsha is saying is, the Hotel/SE/"the company who owns mapy story" should press charges not the man? I could be wrong.

Just be glad it isn't Second Life. I'm not sure she could log on and kill him there, but I do know she could log on and give away/destroy his penis. There may be things worse than death...

Ya, that's more or less what I was getting at. They should be either the ones suing, which is unlikely, or doing the punishing. The way I see it, it's their world, their laws. For the most part anyways. Now if their ToS says anything about hacking resulting in criminal charges, then ya, I can see the jail time and fines being justified.

Except that we're talking about abusing computer systems IN THE REAL WORLD. This is not PVP, this is acting outside of the game.

This would be true if you didn't have to factor in the usage of real world computers in actual reality to access virtual reality... qwert
