StarCraft 2 Now A Trilogy, Three Campaigns to Be Split Into Separate Games - Shacknews - PC Games, PlayStation, Xbox 360 and Wii video game news, previews and downloads

Blizzard today announced that StarCraft II will be released as a trilogy of separate games, each concentrating on one of the universe's three factions.

The first game in the trilogy will consist of the Terran campaign, and is set to be titled "Terrans: Wings of Liberty."

The second Zerg-focused title will be "Zerg: Heart of the Swarm," with the third game being "Protoss: Legacy of the Void."

"[The second and third games] will be like expansion packs, but we really want them to feel like standalone products," said Blizzard's Rob Pardo. Each campaign will be very different, with Pardo announcing the Zerg campaign will contain RPG elements. The Protoss campaigin will likewise be differentiated by elements of diplomacy. In addition, the Terran campaign will feature a Protoss mini-campaign.

The campaigns are planned as concentrated, epic storylines, with enough content to justify a full release. As a result, the games will now feature more in-game cinematics and story content.

Blizzard added that the plans for the multiplayer component are unchanged by the splitting of the campaigns. However, some units will now be unique to the campaigns and will not be playable in multiplayer.
Pardo noted that the decision was necessary to maintain the quality of the product, the alternatives either being a long delay of the game, or a scaling back of the campaigns.

More details may become available during BlizzCon, which continues through this weekend.

    Uhhh.

Yeah, I don't quite get this either. Why shortchange players on the single-player campaign if all the factions are still in multiplayer? Just release all the campaigns together as an actual finished product then think about expansions. Then you can think of new factions to add as well as new stories and campaigns.

But then, this just reeks of the stupidity of this generation of gaming. Microtransactions, multiple SKUs for consoles. Such stupidity was bound to get around to the PC gaming realm sooner or later.

They say they want each one to be a "fully fleshed out campaign," as opposed to the game featuring three small campaigns.

The decision was made because the Terran campaign is practically complete, it just needs more fleshing out and polish, and they estimated another 2 years of development time to complete the other two campaigns and release the full product.

I'll take this over a 2 year wait, so long as it costs no more than $20.

~$20 each? Okay, I'll go for it.

All 3 full price? I'll buy one for the multiplayer and take the BitTorrent discount on the others.

id be willing to drop 40 bucks on the first as long as it comes with full online support for every race, I don't want to be terran vs terran all the time. As long as they treat the next 2 like expansions and price them as such Ill be happy, been waiting for years for this game. Hell I still play the original from time to time.

If it means getting it now, as opposed to waiting another 2 years for anything...ok. Though I'm still not looking forward to 40 Terran missions. I play the whole game so I can get to protoss and annihilate everything with a fleet of cloaked carriers.

                    I'm with you. Protoss rule.

Another one of my favorite strategies is to sneak an Arbiter into the back. The dude I'm playing against always goes "Oh, SH*T" and moves most of his units to the back to intercept me. Then I attack the(now empty) front of his base. When he moves his units back to the front, I recall all mine, back to the back.

I like this actually. All of Blizzard's games have such awesome lore, but don't fully explore it enough. IIRC they said that this time around you would be able to chose the direction in which the story goes rather than it being linear, and this seems to solidify that. Me likey!
