Ya there was a Sonic comic book or something that explains it. He starts out a normal hedgehog (as normal as you can be in white gloves and red shoes ) and then some experiment goes wrong or something and he turns blue. I really can't remember it was quite some time ago. I know I have the comics because my son was a fan when he was little. It was hard to get him to read so we'd do anything we could to interest him and the comics worked. LOL

I had that comic book. Iirc there was only one issue that was given out as a promotion in GamePro or something. He got the red shoes (frictionless shoes lol) from the scientist who eventually became Dr Robotnik after an accident involving some lab equipment and the hardboiled egg he brought in for breakfast. Probably a power surge. Power surges were responsible for pretty much all conferrals of superpower in the 80s.
