Bowser and Mario were awesome, but Sonic(?) and Kirby are WTF. I mean, I'm pretty sure Sonic's always been blue, and Kirby looks goddamned creepy.

No actually Sonic was brown when he was first conceived. His turning blue is actually part of the storyline of the character. ^^

Really? I wouldn't be surprised if he was conceived as a normal-looking hedgehog, but where has it been mentioned that turning blue is part of his storyline? Never seen any references to it. I was mainly referring to his commercial appearances though; he's been blue from day 1, including his Master System and Game Gear incarnations so I honestly don't know wtf that sprite is. I really can't remember it was quite some time ago. I know I have the comics because my son was a fan when he was little. It was hard to get him to read so we'd do anything we could to interest him and the comics worked. LOL

Could be one of 2 things. Sonic wasn't the first choice for the game. The first choice was a rabbit with long ears. Then there was also an armadillo in there too I believe. So that screen could just be a short mock up to compare the characters? Or it could have something to do with the rift Sega had with porting the game over here. Seems the the NA chapter didn't think it would do well over here and wanted to do some changes. Since the JP branch had final say they said NO. So maybe a mock up from the NA branch for changes they wanted to see in the game? I don't know but I wouldn't mind knowing where that little screen came from too.
