Re: Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online

I don't see what MXO has to do with SMT:IO

Like Final Fantasy, SMT tends to pertain to self-contained storylines or universes.

The Matrix was fine so long as it stayed in movies or Animation. As a "universe" concept, however, it fails horribly.

Very few "universe" concepts end up being right. .hack, Shenmue also ended to convuluted or shifting directions too radically. Shenmue did not warrant or need an MMORPG, it was just shoved in there for no good reason, just like MXO. .hack just got too hard to follow because there was all this shit to buy and the games themselves weren't as good as the anime or mangas.

FFXI, The Compilation of FFVII, The Invalice Alliance, the Grand Theft Auto III trilogy, Kingdom Hearts - these are universe concepts done justice. Everything ties together in some way, things that are reconned in still make sense.

But SMT, again, is more about self-contained storylines and sometimes they spark inspiration for spin-offs. This online game is one of those spin-offs.

I suppose of the sides you take in SMT:IO would be fine if one faction gains power and influence over the world in a conquesty type of way. That I could get into, but free MMOs seldom end up that way thanks to RMT factions that come in to cannabalize the whole experience. And microtransactions just plain suck.

I love the idea of PvP in an SMT context, but I'd sooner hop aboard a Pokemon MMORPG if Nintendo made one since the experience would be a lot more faithful and there would be a lot less potential for corrupting it.

Unfortunately every game made so far sucks hard, which is shocking considering how heavily influenced the films are by games.
Eh, the Neo-Jesus/Buddha theme from Revolutions was a bit too much for me, but the rest was good in a fan-fic kinda way.

I guess you could say Enter the Matrix at least had interesting cutscenes and Reloaded was still close-ish to the original.

It's kinda like FFIX, it's FF so it's still good. But it just didn't click for me.

Oh ya! My brother and his wife started the beta last night. They say it's very interesting. If nothing else, very different (conceptually) from any other MMO out there.

It looks like a blend between XI and Matrix online.

I'd love to give it a try.

Well, with that business model, anyone can give it a try - the whole game minus the for-pay loot *is* the free trial.

As long as they didn't do something dumb like require for-pay tokens for a core game mechanic like summoning or fusing, in which case you could hardly play at all without paying first.
Defeated: Maat, Divine Might, Fenrir, Kirin, Cactrot Rapido, Xolotl, Diabolos Prime, Kurrea, 9/10 Dynamis Bosses (missing Tav), Promathia, Proto-Ultima, Proto-Omega, 4 Jailers, Apocalypse Nigh, 6/6 Nyzul Bosses
              RDM90, PLD90, DRG90, COR90, SCH90, BLU54
All Nations Rank 10, ZMs & PMs Complete, AUMs Complete, Captain, Nyzul Floor 100 (5 Weapons, 4 WS), Medal of Altana, WotG Mission 15, 1/3 Addons Complete, 9/9 Abyssea Main Quests, 6/6 Caturae

Re: Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online

I'm starting to come around to the idea of this game, if only for the fact I love the series and it wouldn't really be a major expense to play.

Still not terribly fond of actually buying things for in-game, but I think Atlus would know better than to make the transactions requisite to the rest of the experience. Hopefully it just applies to various items, the core of your power typically comes from the demons you ally with and your HP/SP stats in SMT games, not so much the weapons you wield.

                  So this is already out?

Wish I had a decent PC to play it on, working on that right now.

I haven't really seen what, if anything, the microtransactions entail. Seems most of the stuff is obtainable from within the game if the SMTI Wiki is anything to go off of.

The game's actually really good; I played it for a really long time.

You'll especially like it if you enjoyed the original Shin Megami Tensei games (SMT 1 and 2 on the SNES), and not just one of those "HUURRR DURRR THIS REMINDS ME OF PERSONA" people. Don't get me wrong! I love Persona. I spend 60% of my day playing Persona 2 and 4 lately

But yeah, besides the GMs being complete dumbasses, the game's great and I would recommend it to anyone who likes RPGs.

SMT didn't come out on the NES, at least not in the US as far as I can recall.

But it is one of those games Atlus would do well to translate and put up on Wii's Virtual Console or something. Or just remake them.

I've played SMT Nocturne, Persona 3 FES, Persona 4 and bits of DDS and Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha Vs. The Soulless Army.

Does Imagine play somewhere between Nocturne and Devil Summoner? I know its real time, but haven't read up on how it plays otherwise.
