Re: Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online
I don't see what MXO has to do with SMT:IO
Like Final Fantasy, SMT tends to pertain to self-contained storylines or universes.
The Matrix was fine so long as it stayed in movies or Animation. As a "universe" concept, however, it fails horribly.
Very few "universe" concepts end up being right. .hack, Shenmue also ended to convuluted or shifting directions too radically. Shenmue did not warrant or need an MMORPG, it was just shoved in there for no good reason, just like MXO. .hack just got too hard to follow because there was all this shit to buy and the games themselves weren't as good as the anime or mangas.
FFXI, The Compilation of FFVII, The Invalice Alliance, the Grand Theft Auto III trilogy, Kingdom Hearts - these are universe concepts done justice. Everything ties together in some way, things that are reconned in still make sense.
But SMT, again, is more about self-contained storylines and sometimes they spark inspiration for spin-offs. This online game is one of those spin-offs.
I suppose of the sides you take in SMT:IO would be fine if one faction gains power and influence over the world in a conquesty type of way. That I could get into, but free MMOs seldom end up that way thanks to RMT factions that come in to cannabalize the whole experience. And microtransactions just plain suck.
I love the idea of PvP in an SMT context, but I'd sooner hop aboard a Pokemon MMORPG if Nintendo made one since the experience would be a lot more faithful and there would be a lot less potential for corrupting it.
