Re: Nintendo has *Officially* Lost it

Maybe the better solution is that rather than a Hard Drive you can use the Wifi add on to stream stuff from your PC to your Wii.

    I doubt it though.

No, because then you require everyone who wants to use a hard drive with their Wiis to not only OWN a PC (not as omnipresent as we all wish), but be able to run software made for those PCs. At best, it would be free software, which would be easy to port to other OS, and would quickly be available to anyone running any major OS; but still leave those who choose to run anything else (Like say Haiku or BeOS or whatever it is now) screwed. More likely though it would only be available for Windows and possibly OS X, which would leave plenty of people out in the cold. Additionally, putting it on the PC opens it up quite a bit in terms of safety and piracy, not to mention ruining Nintendo's "so easy to use we make Apple products look like alien technology" benefit.

The better solution would be a firmware update to allow USB hard drives. That's all the Wii needs; maybe put out an officially branded one, but a firmware update that allows you to use a USB hard drive the same as the onboard memory is all that we need. I mean, short of putting the HDD in a disk changer or something, there's no reason I can see to require an official Nintendo product at all.

The best solution is to allow both using storage on another device or have a local USB HDD.

Nonsense, the Wii would just have to support network file systems (Windows File Sharing).
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

Serves them right for using a stupid OS.

To be honest the number of people running these OS's who also have a Wii and wanted to use file sharing between them and don't also have either another system with a more mainstream OS or a dual boot system is going to be pretty small.

People using OS's like those know the support they have for other software when they choose to use it, you can't go complaining later because someone else doesn't support it.

Because Nintendo are bigger hardware nazis than Microsoft when it comes to their consoles?

Feba likes to believe that more people use alternative OS's as their only system then really do. There isn't much point in trying to clue him into reality.

True I suppose; although I was figuring Nintendo would want to use some bizarre software they designed, for some asinine reason (as in, their reasoning being asinine, not why I figured it).

Except that a very important feature of an unrelated hardware device should not require any certain OS for sheer novelty factor.

Imagine if your car had seatbelts; except they required you to wear a certain brand of clothing in order to work. Now imagine that the manufacturer installed these after you bought the car. Even if there were no seatbelts in the first place, you'd still find it annoying as hell to have to change your clothes every time you wanted to buckle up; and that's assuming you don't find that brand itchy or dislike the way they manufacture their clothing in China or somesuch.

If you run something other than Windows, are you expecting to run everything under the sun? No. OS X and Linux can run a helluva lot of software, but there are still rare things which have no alternative, or hardware devices which don't work. If you run something other than Windows, are you expecting to have a completely unrelated device from an entirely separate company (a competitor, really) which shouldn't have ANY involvement with any sort of computer use Windows? Fuck no.

Let's say that %90 of households with a Wii have PCs. Let's say that of those households with PCs, %90 are running Windows. ( Microsoft Windows - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) Assuming that there are 30 million Wiis out there, that leaves over five million Wii owners screwed. And that's ignoring everyone who won't or can't leave their PC running all the time for their Wii to use, and everyone who takes their Wii with them anywhere (suddenly traveling with it goes from a small white box, some cables, and some controllers to including what for many people is a very large computer, monitor, speakers, keyboard, cables to connect everything, and so on)

Alternatively, releasing a firmware patch and an external drive (or again, allowing users to pick a USB drive of their choice) leaves everyone happy, and is what pretty much everyone is hoping for anyway.
