With all the microtransactions and subscription fees tied to games these days, plus the hardware people (or should I say many hardcore gamers) buy to make PCs that make mine look like a piece of dust to their monoliths (I play FFXI on a GeForce 5200 PCI card), I think the idea here is that many gamers have the phenomenon we call "disposable income". So hey, why not charge for a demo or two as well to test the waters?

Stupid? Yes.
Corporately Logical? Yes.

Of course, this depends on how much they are charging for the demo and the purpose. Are they going to charge the cost of the disc (the physical media) plus a shipping divided by the number of discs? If that is the case then I can see it being do-able; however if they are going to charge $40 or more for a demo like GT5: Prologue, then be afraid. Be VERY afraid.

Make it 5 for BBQ, I would also buy a demo of 13. I already know about final fantasy, anyone who cares for the game knows about it. It is probably the 3rd longest game series (next to mario and zelda). If someone has not heard of/played a final fantasy game in 20+ years, they are not going to care about it in a bundled demo.

(I also fail to see how willing to pay maximum 10 dollars for a demo is an epic fail. An epic fail to me would be spending 40-60 $ for a ho hum game or a demo. I could buy a demo and a game I might like (hi2u greatest hits) instead of something lame like DQ8, and have enough left over for a 6pack to take me through the first couple hours.)

First off, this isn't a competition between anyone. This is a discussion about paying for something that has usually been free in the past. So please stop with the childish "I'm on his/her side" garbage.

Any different from packing it in with Advent Children Complete? Hopefully this means a cheaper alternative for those who wanna import the demo, instead of paying $50+ for a Blu-ray disc without english language options.

Yes it is different. You are getting a product that you should be interested in. If you are just buying it for the demo then you've no one to blame but yourself. (FYI, the demo will usually be region encoded and also in a foreign language if the main product is.)

You do not have to have a Gold membership to be able to access the demos. So this is totally irrelevant.


It's this apathy that game developers are counting on. I like to compare it to people in FFXI that piss and moan about nubs at high levels. But you partied with them in lower levels even though they refused to use the right subs, wear decent armor, do their job right, etc. So you basically helped promote them and now that you've done that you are complaining they are the way they are. Look in the mirror, you're just as much at fault. Same with paying for demos, "Oh its just a buck or two." You keep buying them and there will soon be no free demos because why give something away if you are willing to pay? A buck or two adds up over time, and soon there are 10 games coming out that you are really interested in and its $20+ to find out if you might like them. (Let's not forget that demos don't always mean you'll like it in its full form and vice versa.) And then companies will be looking for other ways to rape you in the end too....when is enough, enough? Every game has an advertising buget, would you rather see a flashy commerical on tv (thats usually stupid) or be able to sit down and play the game demo? Let developers know where to put their money......in FREE demos.

Paying for a product or service that is, as per the norm, free of charge. Similar principle. Online gameplay is free on Wii, PS3 and PC. Why is it so much easier to accept paying for monthly charges but not an extensive demo of a highly anticipated game?

I didn't think anyone was actually foolish enough to pay for this kind of thing. A new FF game is great and all, but not so epic that just the demo is worth paying for.

In context with this discussion it is irrelevant. We are talking about game demos and paying for them. If you have a 360, you can still d/l and play demos without paying for a membership. Therefore the point has no relevancy to this discussion.

Because I know I'm one of the younger people here, but hell, I remember putting a significant amount of money into magazines, various promotions (pizza hut), and just plain $5-10 disks in stores (Jampacks I think they were called) to try out demos on Playstation and PS2, and I also have a GameCube demo disk, and I'm reasonably sure I even have some Xbox disks around here.

I bought DQ8 for DQ8. The fact it came w/ an FF12 demo had no influence on me becuase...lets just say my PS2 is modded so I can play my DDR imports (I don't burn full games...but...)

Actually they changed that a while back. You have to have gold now. I know because my brother was fucking mad that he couldn't get demos anymore on this 360 with his account. I have to DL them for him since I have gold (which a friend paid for as a B-day gift ^^)

I probably wouldn't pay for a 90-minute demo.

Regarding GT5 : P, my co-worker has probably gotten more hours of playtime out of it than he did out of R&CF : ToD, which he played through in a day or two and has now let me borrow. Considering GT5 : P was discounted 33% compared to full releases (not comparing with greatest hits versions here), has a fair amount of challenging single player gameplay, and online gameplay, I kind of think it's an exception when talking about charging for demos.
