Rumor: Square Enix may sell stand-alone Final Fantasy XIII demo - Joystiq

"Speaking in an interview with Japanese magazine Dengeki PS3, Square's Tetsuya Nomura allegedly revealed that the company may offer the demo version of Final Fantasy XIII – set for inclusion with the (for now Asia-only) Blu-ray release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children: Complete – for sale separately at retail.

This as-of-yet-unconfirmed news comes from FinalFantasyXIII.net, which, in addition to its translating of the article, reckons that the idea of charging for the 90-minute-plus demo is fairly unprecedented. You know, we could have sworn we saw Gran Turismo 5: Prologue for $39.99 at Target just the other day ..."

SE, charging for a DEMO is lame......no matter how long it is. Most of that time will be spent in cut scenes and doing a boring as hell tutorial. (Don't even get me started on some of those lame ass tutorials that make me end up hating the game before I've even gotten to it.)

Well, that might be better than sticking it with a game people buy for the demo but don't actually play the main game. (See: MGS2 demo in Zone of the Enders. Also: FFXII demo in Dragon Quest VIII)

I don't see the harm if the demo is just $5 or something.

TGM's right, charging for a demo is retarded. The whole point of the demo is to get people aware of your product, thus should be paid for by the promoter since it's a marketing tool.

Or should we start paying for companies to run commercials and post adds now?

Those games were pre-harddrive driven consoles. With the current configuration, there is absolutely no reason to pay for a demo. You can even d/l demos for the DS at local stores for free. With current technology there isn't a need to charge........unless you are just thinking of lining your pockets.

Any different from packing it in with Advent Children Complete? Hopefully this means a cheaper alternative for those who wanna import the demo, instead of paying $50+ for a Blu-ray disc without english language options.

I have to agree with BBQ; it's all in execution. SE could easily bundle it with some other game to promote that game, although it would likely be as empty as ZOE's sales. If people don't appreciate the game, they don't appreciate it.

While I agree with the point of a demo being to get your product out and let people try it, you're forgetting that it's final fucking fantasy. They stand to make a considerably larger amount of money by selling demos to fans and people who are interested than they would make by the extra market that a demo would gain them.

Actually, an FF11 set that came with an FF13 demo would be pretty good. Not sure if when they're going to get around to the next Vana'diel Collection, but it would be a good excuse for them to release a PS3 version (Blu-Ray disk to store FF13 goodies as well, and PS3 native so that people don't have to worry about BC). Plenty of people would buy it (at $20-40) just for the FF13 demo, and they stand to wrangle in plenty of players for FFXI with a free trial too (maybe extend it to two or three months to get them into the game)
