Dude(ette? I'm not totally sure,) chill out. Whomever made that site is just trolling.

The Rick Astley thing is a 4chan meme. They'll post a link to something supposedly relevant to the thread, but the link takes you to a Youtube video of the the song "Never gonna give you up." At that point, you've been Rickrolled. Also, see Poe's Law - "Without a blatant display of humour, it is impossible to tell the difference between religious Fundamentalism and a parody thereof."

      Re: Spore a bore??

Finally hit tribal stage tonight. I haven't been able to play too much.

I liked the creature stage a lot.

I almost went after the invisible epic creature near the end there but he ran off before I could try. He would have killed me anyway I'm sure. lol

        Re: Spore a bore??

You know, really... I'm tired of hearing this stuff.

I don't believe in evolution in any way, with the exception of microevolution which is the only version of evolution which has ever been proved. Call me what you will, I will not back off this stance until you give me hard evidence to the contrary.

With that being said, however, I do find Spore to be a fun game. Sure, it propagates evolution to a point, but in a game like this (where really, the point is to be able to control everything from looks to buildings) it's almost necessary. If you look at the space stage as the goal of the game, I think it's mandatory that you build some kind of connection to the creature instead of just throwing you in space and say "here - there's your planet, this is your ship. Go explore."

So, going backwards, you'd want to design your planet (I'm leaving vehicles out of this, but you can put them in where necessary). This involves just how you were able to reach space (or: How I Conquered the World). Since that mostly involves having a lot of cities under your control, we work backwards again: let's design how we acted before we were civilized enough to handle steel and explosives in cities (or: The Tribal Way). This needs a bit of a back story though: before we congregated and learned the importance of fire, what were we like (or: Brave New Creature). The creature phase is mostly microevolution, making mostly minor changes to the overall abilities of a creature. Sure, you could do something crazy and turn your beast into something different every turn, but it's really not as fun to do that (very tedious, actually).

Now, that brings us back to the cell phase. The only really contestable thing with regards to evolution in my mind: a small, swimming creature growing legs and hopping up on land. And really, I can look past that. It's still an incredible game with a unique premise (or at least, unique implementation of that premise) and something that, as Feba said earlier, we really need. The game itself fosters creativity and embellishment instead of reflexes and twitchy fingers. It makes you think in terms of a strategy (especially when you play it multiple times) instead of all-out violence.

And, I'm not going to say I'm sorry if I offended anyone. Frankly, I stopped giving a damn toward the end of page 2. If I offended you, DIAF or go evolve a backbone.

Back on topic, could we try to keep this thread to Spore, and not the politics thereof?

          Re: Spore a bore??

I loved the cell and creature stages, but I started getting bored during the tribal stage. It picked up a little in the next stage when it was actually like playing a real RTS, but the lack of difficulty eventually made it stale and I just stopped playing after I got to space stage.

I think they made it far too easy to just annihilate every opposing creature in your path. I tried making some friends in the creature stage, but it was so much easier to just destroy them. I guess it was pretty fun for the 4 or 5 hours it lasted.

You know I hate this about religion.

They are the biggest bigots in the world. They argue with each other about who’s religion is right and who’s is wrong, anyone that doesn't believe in what they believe in to them shouldn't exist (BBC article 2 weeks ago when a Christian activist said Spore should be banned as it denied the existence of the true god)

I'm sorry but I'm an atheist, to me if people want to believe in a god, so be it thats your belief that you are entitled to, but don't try and force it down my throat saying I'm bad and shouldn't have the right to live because I don't believe in what you do. I don't give a shit, but it seems people take personally if I don't have the same beliefs as them.

Spore wasn't created to open up the argument of revolution, it was created as a game to design and build your own alien. But the religions have to stick their fucking oar in and start bleating about things. Not only that but if this big experiment under the Alps proves something they wont like, guess what’s going to happen, on the radio this morning, one of the British scientist working their has said his wife has already received 15 death threats from religious activists as they are saying that this experiment is trying to undermine what thousands of years of good christian life has created, I doubt you'll get that artical in America as it will be deemed to "constitutionally damaging"

I'll keep it short and simple:
1- 29+ Evidences for Macroevolution: the Scientific Case for Common Descent
2- Rejecting evolution requires one of two assumptions. Either:
2a- God is a liar, who put many things on the planet just for the sake of misleading humanity; or
2b- There is a massive scientific conspiracy (see Level of support for evolution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , studies consistently show more than %99 of scientists, in relevant studies, accept evolution) to promote evolution.

Now, God being a lying bastard would fit pretty well with other parts of the bible, I will admit. However, if you honestly believe that he is intentionally trying to deceive humanity into believing in evolution, how can we know that the bible isn't also a tool of deceit?

Over %99 of scientists, in fields to which evolution is incredibly relevant and important must either be gravely mistaken about it (again, likely central to their life's work and many years of study at university and afterwards) or downright conspiring about it. Now, given the gigantic amount of rigor, peer reviews, fact checking and double checking, opposition from creationist groups, it's extremely unlikely that so many scientists (remember, their livelihood is all about checking and refining facts) are wrong, unless you assume the above; that god is trying to fool humanity. That leaves us with a massive conspiracy. I shouldn't need to explain how silly that is.

                  Re: Spore a bore??

Anti Spore was (still is?) a prank/joke/what-have-you.

It was created by someone who used Christianity as a base for attacking Spore to the purpose of stringing internet users along, believing that it is a over-zealous person over-reacting to a game for the end result of saying "Ah-ha, this is all a big joke!" ,pointing and laughing.

It is not to be taken seriously, this is not a real fanatic demanding everyone obey them or their religion.

There's even a wikipedia article on the Rick Roll.... although I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Clicky clicky. Please.

                  People, you should be laughing.

The thing about religious people is no matter how much proof you give them they'll still deny it. There's been a great series on BBC2 called "The Genius of Charles Darwin". Interview from Radio 4 here. Now the people interviewd in the program strike me as the same sort of nuts who complain about spore.

As for Spore, its great when you start but as others have said, it gets old pretty quickly. Maybe we're going about it the wrong way though, We're all rushing off to eat everything in sight whilst TGM is making friends.

That's essentially how it was intended. It's designed to get you into the space stage rather quickly. It's also geared a lot more towards casual gamers so there isn't as much complexity in some regards.

I'm having fun with it, although it's frustrating the hell out of me right now. I'm in the space stage and for some reason most people just hate me lol. The one ally I have wants me to run off and collect artifacts on planets that are controlled by someone trying to kill me, so that really sucks, and for some reason my home planet won't allow me the option to go to war yet.

I've pretty much put that race aside for now, working on getting a race of herbivores and omnivores going...have to admit, though, being a carnivore and eating everything in sight seems to be MUCH easier than befriending people ^^

I particularily enjoyed the creature stage. Creating a character and romping around destroying others was a lot of fun. I think the space stage is definitely the most expansive though. It's a like a big galactic sized sandbox.

Oh, and in regards to the antispore.com website:

But the Bible teaches us that God was not done with man. For we were His creation and He then spoke to Noah in Genesis 8:21-27 after the flood.
“21. The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never gonna give you up. 22. “Never gonna let you down.” 23.”Never gonna run around and desert you.” 24. “Never gonna make you cry.” 25. “Never gonna say goodbye.” 26. “Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.” 27.”Never truly believe anything you read on the Internet. There will always be cases of Poe’s Law.”

Ya a poll said most people liked the creature stage and the space stage was the least liked. Personally I liked the cell stage but wished it would have taken longer to evolve.

The problem with Spore is despite what your creature actually is, there are really only two ways to play it. Aggressively or passively. I've made around 7 species so far(gotten all of them to Space stage) and I am not going to make another one. But there is nothing else to do, but to make another one. It is obvious the developers intended Space to be the most popular stage, but it is also obvious it is one of the least popular. Cell and Civilization need some major improvements. Tribal and Creature are OK right now, but they could use some stuff in an expansion or two.

                                Re: Spore a bore??

My biggest beef with Spore is the way it set the language to Norwegian and gave me no option to change it. Who the hell thought that was a good idea? Norwegian game translations suck donkey.

Fortunately, the internet could help with that.

That aside, while I find Spore to be a generally fun game to play, it's not quite what I expected. I never watched any trailers or read anything about it, if I had done that I probably wouldn't have been as excited. I was hoping for something... Less arcade-ish, I guess. You know, just making a cell and letting nature do its work, managing this or that as time went by. Perhaps directly encountering other players on the way to civilization. A focus on the whole species would be nice, I disliked how the game put me in there as a specific individual. When I finished the cell phase (which I enjoyed) and got to the creature phase thinking "now the real fun should start", and found myself running around like a doofus while the game tried to be complex by letting me decide whether I would sing for the other species or eat them, I was like "...WTF?"

I guess, overall, it was a major disappointment to me. Oh well.

                                Making creatures is nice.

Oh, and while the other editors are fun, the clothing ones suck.
