PAX 2008 hands-on: Spore, have we seen enough already? - Joystiq

"The last stop on our Electronic Arts booth tour at PAX was dedicated to Spore. That's right, it's more Spore news. It's not a real day on Joystiq unless you get some minor Spore news, or a definitive hands-on experience. With the game actually coming out (can it be?!) in five days, maybe you'll start to see these die down a bit. Unless, of course, there's a secret Hot Coffee level that we find during our explorations.

But is the game coming out a bit too late, or just in time? It feels like it's starting to wear out its welcome just a bit. Like that house guest that just won't leave, is Spore in danger of becoming a bore? German gamer mags have already given the game fairly disappointing scores, and in all honesty, we were ready to leave our demo early, even though we went hands-on with the whole thing. Find out why after the break.

The EA folks didn't show us anything that we hadn't seen before, and they took us through all of the different game stages, right up to the point where you launch into space. Carl Sagan and EA told us space was vast, and they sure weren't kidding. It's huge. Massive. Giganimous. According to the developer we spoke to, "You'll spend far more time in space than you will in the rest of the game." We believe it.

Now, the bad news, and this might just be a byproduct of playing it at a kiosk in the middle of a massive gaming convention... but we started to get bored. Once our creatures developed military vehicles and we could pound the crap out of our friendly neighbors (you're singing at me? TAKE THIS!), it picked up a bit. However, I was thinking "Gee, I sure hope I get more excited when this comes out."

When we ventured out into the giant playground of space, our interest factor (we need a HUD for that thing) started to waver. You know it's not a good sign during a demo when you start wondering about things like "Hmm, what am I going to have for lunch?" and "Did I leave the iron on?" or "Can I play Mirror's Edge one more time?" Have we had enough Spore? A PAX attendee behind us leaned over and remarked to her friend "So... is this it? It looks like The Sims in Space." Not bad, random attendee.

So, what was boring about it? Exactly the things that are supposed to be fresh and exciting. Creating creatures is fun, but developing them and helping them along to each new level was slow and plodding. Remember when everyone bought a Tamagotchi because it was the coolest thing in the world and OMG you just had to have one? Then when you played with it for about two days, you lost interest. Millions of Tamagotchi's died due to boredom. Spore is like a Tamagotchi times a thousand.

Even the EA rep was skipping us from the cell level to the creature level to the tribal level and so on. Yes, I know that's because it takes eons (literally) to get your creatures to those levels, but the gameplay element of actually making it that far just wasn't doing it for me. At least it wasn't doing it for me in a loud convention filled with teeming masses of people who wanted to see what you were doing, and in some cases hadn't bathed in awhile.

It's impossible to translate a kiosk experience to playing at home, but it's easy enough to know what's fun at a kiosk and what isn't. I'm not saying Spore wasn't fun, because it was... from time to time. But you can't ignore your brain when it starts prodding you to move on, and I ended up leaving a lot earlier than I thought I would. I'm still planning on picking this one up, but I hope I don't have to tase myself every five minutes to keep my excitement level running high.
    "

Achtung, baby! German mags give Spore disappointing scores - Joystiq

"For the most part, all is quiet on the western front in terms of Spore reviews, but there are some exceptions sneaking out of Germany. VG247 reports that German PC mags Gamestar and PC Games have rated Spore with a 79 and 73, respectively. Although not gawd-awful, it's not exactly in line with the glowing reviews the publisher is hoping for with Will Wright's ultra-hyped and much-delayed "sim everything."

We're not currently aware of when the North American embargo on reviews expires, but the European one is allegedly up this Friday, alongside the game's release in the region. UK mag PC Gamer was apparently given the all-clear by EA to release its review early, doling out an impressive 91. It'll be very interesting to find out what the European outlets think of the game later this week.

Spore: Spore Cracked And Torrented, Already

"Well, it had to happen - Spore has hit the intertorrents. Pirates are downloading spores through the intricate series of tubes we call the internet.

It seems as though some stores in Australia have been selling advance copies of the game a few days before the official release date.

Over the weekend, a Warez group called “RELOADED” has managed to crack the copy protection on the game and now it is being downloaded by hundreds of cheapskates over bittorrent.

I'm not excited even a little bit anymore, Spore looks boring and it has looked boring for a long time, I uninstalled the creature maker thing without even finishing up a single creature because it considerably failed to deliver.

I think spore will be on teh same lines as Sims, you don't take it too seriosuly and have fun creating the most bizzar creatures and nuking the hell out of your adversaries. I enjoy these building games, which effectively with designing your creature, buildings and vehicles is very similar. Longevity is up to the person, but I hope to get my copy by saturday and have a play, if it passes the time for a while it has made the money worth spending.

Well i had creature creator and built a couple of things, so what do ya think?

The procedural animation has long been the only thing that's interested me about this game. I certainly don't expect it to have very deep gameplay matching other popular RTS games.

Played it, its ok. Haven't had the time to invest in it so far, maybe tomorrow. It was fun to futz with in the beginning but then it got a bit boring. I'm not a huge Sims fan though and its very much on those lines so thats probably a part of it too. If you love the Sims, you'll probably get into it more. I'm remaking my creature too cause mine sucks....maybe that had something to do with it too. LOL

I liked the Sims, but only to a point. I don't like micromanaging it as much as the game requires, because if you don't micromanage in that game the sims turn to stupid and lose their jobs and/or get shipped off to military school.

So, TGM, does Spore still have the same level of micromanaging as the Sims? Or is it more of a "I'll sit back for a little while and see what happens" type of game?

Spore is an excellent tech demo, and it's good that it was made because we need the technology to exist, but as a game I never understood why people were getting excited. They really overdid it with the endless hype, though. Spore was cool years ago when we first watched Will Wright give an example of it; nowadays it seems stale.

Well basically, you are an organism that need to evolve and you are given goals in order to achieve this. Of course one of the main goals is to eat. When you are a one celled organism you may die alot...I did...drove me nuts. You can be a carnivore or a herbivore...I chose carnivore. You gain points as you kill and eat and with some of your kills or by finding certain objects, you will gain tiles that give you different choices in parts or abilities that you can add. So let's say you kill something and it drops a Poison tile. Then you will be able to equip this ability as long as you have enough points. Each ability or part uses a different amount of points. You can also take off whats on your character and "sell" it for points. (Big tip, swimming fast in the very beginning is important! LOL) Then you can evolve and move to land once you can equip legs. There you have more goals and choices. See another species, are you friendly or aggressive to it. Being a friend can yeild rewards like they will heal you and stuff.

The most fun I have is picking the parts and adjusting them. You get to place them where ever you want and make them as big or small as you want. It's fun building the little guy....more than the game actually. LOL I think thats why they put out the creature creator first. Show them how much fun building one is and that will hook them.

I have to say I can see playing this for short bouts of time. After about 30 minutes my mind starts to wander. The game just doesn't pull me in and I will say that even though I'm not a huge Sims fan, the Sims did engage me more than this game does.

*DISCLAIMER* I am only in the beginning stages of the game like I said. I've put about 4 hours into it. It could be like some RPG's that it takes a while to set up and really suck you in.

                    Naughty TGM... >.>

I got it today, played around with it for a while. It's fun so far.

The Joystiq article missed the point though. It's designed to get you from cell to space in just a few hours. That's the point when the game really opens up.

You would have laughed your butt off at me because it took me longer than that! LOL I thought if you died as a cell that it might screw up the game. Kinda like dying and losing exp or equips or something, so I would restart when I died. LOL Did that for a while and then said F**K THIS! Finally made it out of the primordial pond though so all is well with the world. Didn't eat my first encounter either, we all sang and became friends. LOL My son kept egging me on "JUST EAT THEM FOR PETE'S SAKE ITS ONE OF YOUR GOALS!!"

                        Re: Spore a bore??

Yes, I picked it up. Actually, I went and bought it on Thursday, gave up waiting for it for 10 minutes and got an... unofficial version while I waited.

It is quite fun, actually. I do think it was overrated some, but I'm still hooked on it. I've actually gone from cell to space a few times now, and the only thing I'm going to say about that is make sure, no matter what else you do, have the Return Home Ticket. That thing has saved me more than a few times, and is especially helpful when you go exploring the galaxy, run out of energy and can't find anyone in range who can fill you up. Also: I love black holes. I'm just saying. I have traveled from one edge of the galaxy to the other and back (even saw an empire I swore I had destroyed on the Other Side... I had to abduct them for a mission )

To reply to my own question, though... I do think in space it does get tedious. I've had 2 allies who were at war with each other, and I had to decide who to side with (hint: I went with the stronger one). I've also have a fairly sizable empire (~10-15 systems, 2 of which I have terraformed up to T3 from T0, majority of the others were captured from early wars), and the progress bar is actually fairly close to the end (2 more promotions to the end), but I do want to get a lot more done before I reach that point, if I do.

Back on topic with the last paragraph: it's tedious. Personally, I would like to be over on the other side of the galaxy doing missions with the Grox (almost to neutral, and they pay well), but whenever I head back to my home to recharge, there's always 500 crisis's I have to deal with... I do wish some of these planets (especially the ones being attacked and raided by pirates) would use their defenses or other resources and deal with it on their own... but no, you have to bother me for 10-15 minutes at a time to kill a bunch of one-hit-kills ships because you can't take care of them

Anyway, either way at least I see something tangible out of all of it -- unlike The Sims, who just die if you don't take care of them right (or mine do, anyway), you do get promotions and badges for defending allies, blowing up ships, etc, which means better upgrades to spend more money than I'd care to admit on. I'm just waiting to unlock the "destroys a planet" bomb. I've been wanting to do that since the first demo.

                          Re: Spore a bore??

Theres quite alot of building you can do, ignoring the obvious creature building you have other things you can build... In tribal stage, you can dress your creature with simple parts and as you conquer your enemy tribes you can add buildings to your "camp" for things like stone axes, throwing spears (I recommend these especially if some of the tribes can be flying creatures) Then when you hit civilisation you get even more building to do.

Design and build your town hall
                          Design and build houses
                          Design and build factories
                          Design and build entertainment buildings
You also design and build vehicles, where you have land, sea and air)
Then last but not least you build a spaceship.

I will post a few images later.

                              To add to the list:

There's actually 9 vehicles you can design total: A land, sea and air for religious, trading, and military.

And, Feba, that's a lot of the game, really... it's interesting to see how you can design things without having limitations of the real world (namely physics). I've had a few buildings where parts, as Douglas Adams put it, "hung in the air in much the same way as bricks don't". But, if design isn't your forte, that's why there's a Sporepedia -- a collection of everybody else's creations that you've downloaded including the ~1700 items from Maxis. You can just use someone else's design, maybe tweak the paint. I've done that a few times.
