Re: What do you consider "FINAL FANTASY"?
I just see FF as a brand. If it's got Final Fantasy in the title, it's a Final Fantasy game. I make an exception for the Gameboy FF Legend and FF Adventure games, as those were rebranded as FF for their US releases.
You're right, sure. FF7 has jobs attached to materia tasks instead of an out-and-out class as a cohesive whole. but then, FF8 it is the same way. FF8, all the "jobs" were just random abilities placed on GFs. You combine them and in effect, create your own class. This is just as job-y as FF7.
I consider both central "Final Fantasy" titles. My main point (which was completely missed) was that the Final Fantasy genre spans far and wide. Even the job system gets exploded and it still manages to feel like a true Final Fantasy.
Btw, I really do like the Materia system. The whole pairing for higher benefit thing really appeals to my inner powergamer. Still... any sort of redone Materia system, with Square's experience since, would be sure to be twice as good. Nevermind the fanboys who'd say it's no longer pure.

Re: What do you consider "FINAL FANTASY"?
It'd be interesting to see subsequent FF installments(or spin-off titles), placed in Vana'diel's future(or past)... sort of a "Vana'diel Alliance." I'd also like to see the same of Spira(given the connection FFX-2 made with the world of FF7). FFX/X-2's world seemed very rich to me and rife with stories to be explored.
This kind of ignores the self-contained worlds and stories unique to many FF games, but I think it'd be worth it to ignore that tradition a few more times.

I second all these motions.
All things with the FF title seem 'Final Fantasy' to me in some way. The only one that didn't was that failure TSW movie.
VII and X's worlds especially intrigue me, and I could continue playing about in them across all kinds of time frames and be sufficiently amused for the rest of my life.

Re: What do you consider "FINAL FANTASY"?
To be honest all of the FF games with Final fantay i nthe title are Final Fantasy games. There is no definition of a "true" Final Fantasy game because they are all different. However IMO FFXI is the most representative one of the whole franchise.
Games like Ergheiz and Kingdom Hearts, games that have final fantasy characters but aren't part of the franchise aren't Final Fantasy games. By the logic of "It has FF characters so it must be an FF game" means that Soul Calibur 4 is Star Wars because Star Wars characters make cameo appearances.
Re: What do you consider "FINAL FANTASY"?
I consider KH its own thing, although it's true that FF characters are very important and KH wouldn't be KH without the FF characters and references (like the Job-themed Nobodies.) KH is just too different in terms of themes, art style, playstyle, etc for me to call it a Final Fantasy game.
Re: What do you consider "FINAL FANTASY"?
Yeah KH is more of what I consider an alternate reality more than part of the Final Fantasy cannon. Various FF characters lost thier worlds to the Heartless and went to make a new home together, yet the story of FFVII's world continues to unfold.
Its like a crossover comic book, Batman and Spiderman wouldn't usually meet up in New York, but wouldn't it be cool if they did anyway? Most of us didn't think about FF characters hooking up with Disney characters, but it still proved to be interesting.
Re: What do you consider "FINAL FANTASY"?
To me, the series has lost it's soul.
Fuck you SE for letting Nobuo go. He's worth a hell of a lot more than all the pretty graphics you can ever get out of a 360/PS3. Uematsu is my musical hero and I DEMAND he come back (even though he in all likelyhood won't)
Re: What do you consider "FINAL FANTASY"?
Sorry I forgot common sense didn't apply :-|
Both Nobuo and Hironobu left SE, which could explain the sudden decrease on the quality of the titles, but I wouldn't say the series has lost its soul, maybe it got a bit sidetracked but I think the recent titles are still honorable masterpieces, FFXII became my favorite game without me ever even finishing it... my Ps2 broke down and im saving for a Ps3 but will wait for a price drop anyway to get a chance to finish 12 and play 13 and Versus ^.^

Err how do you intend to finish your 12 save on a PS3? Last I knew, you had to create a virtual memory card on the 3's HDD. it doesn't have ports for memory cards. Or is there some machination that allows you to transfer saved data to the HDD via USB?
