Sony Computer Entertainment Japan held a small conference earlier today. It wasn't a public media event but a few good bits of news came out of it. Most of the conference was focused on Sony's PSP platform, which has emerged in 2008 as the #1 selling hardware in Japan.

-SCE announced "PSN Store Download Service" for PSP, which will enable all PSP models to connect to the PlayStation Store and download content directly.
-SCE also announced a "PS3 Free Online Network Service" for PSP, in which ad-hoc (local multi-player) only PSP games can be connected via WiFi to a user's PS3, and can use the system link to play compatible games online. MONSTER HUNTER Portable 2nd G, the PSP's bestselling Japanese title to date, will be the first game to support the service, with many more to be announced in the future.
-Finally, Level 5's epic Japanese RPG WHITE KNIGHT CHRONICLES: Heartbeat of the Ancients will finally be re-revealed this month in Japan. Level 5 has been working very hard to complete the game, and the first details will be announced this month along with a pre-order campaign for Japanese consumers. The game will continue to be showcased at Tokyo Games Show in October.
