Rumor: $199 Xbox with Motion Controller on the Way

"Xbox 360 Fanboy, citing "a tip from a source close to Microsoft's marketing department," says the price cut to $199 for the Arcade system is meant to position that bundle against the Wii. So it'll get a huge family-friendly marketing push and title support. And in the fall, it gets a motion controller with some motion-controlled mini-games developed by Rare.

Again, according to this rumor (by the time I'm repeating it to you, it's fourth-hand) the controller will be sold separately and will be compatible with all versions of the 360 console. Reading the story, it sounds like you would get the controller plus an even larger list of mini-games if you buy it separately.

The new products are set to drop Holiday 2008, says Xbox 360 Fanboy. We shall see."

We've had these rumours (and some leaks to back them up) since at least a few weeks before E3. MS also copied the Mii system, as well as some other things.

Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me one bit. They're no good at being themselves. They're getting their asses kicked by PS3 and Wii, and the only way they've ever known to fight back is to copy what their competitors are doing, try to improve on it a little, and hope consumers prefer their version.

Note how the 360 line is the flattest. The PS3 has been outselling the 360 since the beginning of this year IIRC.

Being outsold by a competitor who really should be doing worse than you for three quarters straight is pretty much the definition of getting your ass kicked. And that's completely ignoring the "360 only had an advantage because it was released very prematurely and is losing the lead it had at a quickening rate".

Well I don't want this thread to de-evolve into this is better than that arguement so I'll agree to disagree with you.

As for the topic at hand, I just can't see the 360 ever being attractive to casual gamers. One time on Live and they will sell it on Ebay.

I'm not saying that the PS3 is better than 360. I mean, it is, but my point was that it's been PERFORMING much better than the 360 in terms of sales. Much in the same way that even 360 fanboys would have to shut their eyes and go "LALALALALALALALA I'M NOT LISTENING I'M NOT LISTENING GO AWAY I CAN'T HEAR YOU I'M NOT LISTENING" to deny that the Wii is selling like hotcakes.

As to the 360 being attractive to casuals, they're going to need a lot more than 'minigames'. But MS's strategy is probably more along the lines of bait and switch-- lure people in with fun family games, and then hope that they stay around and try more serious games. Try to push it as a 'family in the sense that everyone in the family will have things they like about it' as opposed to 'the family actually playing together'-- try to get dad into Halo, and mom/junior/sweetie into whatever the 360 has for them, I don't really care.

It will be hilarious to see the backlash if MS seriously tries to promote the 360 as a family console, though-- there's obviously already the problem of all of the homophobic and generally incredibly inappropriate (even for adults, I mean) comments on Live, try to promote it as a family console and people will care. Especially when MS knows about this problem and does absolutely nothing about it. Honestly I'd be surprised if there aren't LGBT groups already pissed about the way MS treats them.

I mean, hell, I've seen news accounts of how dangerous Pictochat is and how it's going to ruin our children. XBL? Yeah, no.

Microsoft is being outsold by both PS3 and PSP worldwide.

Valve is actually interested in developing for PS3 now. If that doesn't say asskicking, I dunno what does.

That said, I'll finally be a 360 owner once again, after next month. Stupid motion controls or not, $199 for an Arcade is a steal.

You also have to keep in mind that the XBOX360 had oh what a year and a half jump on the PS3. If we compared from day on of PS3 I bet the lines would favor PS3 slightly more. (of course this does not include the fact that PS2 sales were still through the roof, and still are it is by far the longest life, best selling system of all time, and discrediting that it had the longest carry over of any last gen system to this gen says alot about how ass backwards XBOX and Nintendo went.)


Basically it can be summed up the same way Sony haswon the last 2 system wars.

1. Nintendo gouges prices for ever.
2. Microsoft has some serious, serious serious, marketing flaws.
3. Sony will take it slow and steady and eventually win the race.


As for the topic at hand Xboxii or whatever it is dubbed is going to fail hard. If I was going to by a system for its entertainment value in that regard I am going for nintendo. Or to an extent PS3, both of which already have game supprt for their wireless control remotes in that aspect. As usual with a company that wants to rush out of the box with programs and systems that arent up to par with the competition, just for the sake of stamping a name tag on it and praying (hi 2 u windows vista.) I think XBOX is going to have a rude awakening this holiday season. PS3 is scheduled to have some decent titles drop for it in the comming months, and the months following christmas. We still have yet to see some of PS's platorm titles come through, such as Socom. While Xbox dropped its 3rd Halo which was basically halo 1 on roids.

It is a novel idea on the part of microsoft, but they have already made their stamp in the market, that they want to play second fiddle to both nintendo and sony. I will not buy a console that is multi-platform like that. I want a console that is either going to be awesome at the fun childish games (Wii) or a console that is going to have disgusting displays, stories, depth of my more adult geared games (PS3). If I want a multi platform system that can do everything at once, I will just use my computer.

Microsoft's marketing is absolutely flawless, better than Sony's for sure. The problem seems to lie in that they can't reach strong sales outside a specific demographic. This generation is much better for them this generation than last, as they've picked up a number of PS2 owners who either own/don't want a Wii and don't want to pay the PS3's higher price.

This next price drop could do great things for their lasting sales; though this year so far has been pretty pathetic for them. I think sales this holiday will be neck and neck or slightly higher than PS3, unless Sony counters with a price drop as well.

well they completley gaffed on their "Ipod killer" Mp3 realeasing it the same day Ipod had a roll back, and released the Iphone in canada. 2 Have sold at the EB games in my home city and 6 in london a city of almost 450K pretty dismall. I wonder how many ipods have sold, I know I bought 1 so ya there marketing has some kinks this year in more than just video gaming.

The rollback is nice but who is to say sony isnt saving a suprise roll back of their own 199 for a box or 299 for a ps3 basic system. and Wii doesnt ever need to roll back they have the price war by the balls right now, which explains how their DS and Wii are crushing the feild.

Making profit != Price gouging.

Just because Nintendo chooses to actually make money on their hardware instead of taking a loss on every sale does not mean they are price gouging.

If you want price gouging, take a look at the 360 Hard Drive and Wireless Adapter. Then take a look at how much an external hard drive and wifi card (for PC) cost.

Not at all, really. The Xbox was (iirc) the last console to market last gen, and the 360 was the first one to market this gen. The Xbox also didn't have much of a library (due to being later than other consoles, "MS console" being somewhat shaky, and the PS2's dominance, especially in Japan) and thus didn't have nearly as much of a reason to pick it up. The Gamecube also had a significantly smaller library. The PS2's continued success is mainly due to its success in the previous generation. If, say, the Gamecube had been #1, we wouldn't see PS2 continuing to sell as it is.

Additionally, Microsoft and Nintendo are trying to move away from their old consoles, and get people to buy 360s and Wiis. Sony is somewhat relying on PS2 to carry them; just look at how they keep talking about PS2 sales and their profits (or lack thereof)

The idea that the Wii cannot have stories, depth, or adult gameplay is just plain silly. Look at the controversy around Manhunt 2. The motion controls add a lot. I can vouch for this personally through my experience with Godfather: Blackhand. Saying that having more polygons makes a PS3 game more mature than moving your hands together to choke someone is quite a bit of a stretch; especially considering we had plenty of mature games last gen. There's also MadWorld and No More Heroes out there, which are hyperviolent Wii exclusives (whether MadWorld is good or not remains to be seen, but it is unquestionably violent). The Conduit is an upcoming and very promising FPS, and the Wii looks to be the best platform for any 'light gun' games companies may make (I can think of four I've heard are good off the top of my head). There's plenty of room out there for mature Wii games.

sure there are mature games but you can not deny its majority of software is desinged for the "fun" silly games whicj is what I meant by childish, If I had children I would be getting a Wii for its larger content of non-mature rated games.

The same goes for the other consoles. It's not pointed out as much, but PS3 and 360 aren't all gorefests either. Any one of the three has plenty of family friendly titles.

The majority of the software on all three platforms is absolute crap. That doesn't have any reflection on the console themselves, though. It's only when there's a LACK of games that it is reflective on a console, and I really don't think that any of the current gen consoles has that.
