  • Do you even want DVD on Wii?

Alright, by now everyone should know about homebrew successfully playing DVDs on Wii. This proves that Nintendo would merely need software patches in order to allow Wii to play DVDs, and NOT a new hardware revision as some had thought (ala Panasonic Q).

Obviously, the Wii would have a couple advantages to DVD playback-- mainly cursor support that's not usually found outside of computers (and computers are not a very good place to watch movies generally speaking)

There's also the ability for Nintendo to add other features-- one I'd like to see would be Balance Board support. For everyone who's played Wii Fit, imagine Free Step, but when you stop, the DVD stops too. Want to keep watching? Keep walking.

Personally, I'm a lazy asshole, so if I'm watching a movie I'd rather not have to walk in order to keep watching, although someone, somewhere, may find this to be a good way to get a workout. Hell, Nintendo may end up stealing it from you at some point as well.

Also, as a note to your avatar.

    "I'm in despair!"

It would be cool if they added that kind of additinal functionality to a dvd capability, but to be honest with myself, I'd never use it and would stick with one of my other 3 players.

Re: Do you even want DVD on Wii?

as a side note, number of DVD players I have:

        DVD/VCR
        PS2
        Xbox (not hooked up)
        Portable DVD player
        Laptop (not mine, but eh)
        Computer (actually, two DVD drives)
        Stereo (although it doesn't function)

so I'm not dying for a Wii DVD player; and honestly have a hard time imagining how anyone can criticize the Wii over that nowadays. (gamecube, yeah, DVDs weren't omnipresent and a good reason to buy a console. today? not so much)

I would like a DVD player with added functionality, as mentioned above, and maybe with some of the tricks from the Photo Channel. A DVD channel that could read video from Data DVDs (not formatted to DVD video, but simply drag and drop files) would be sweet too. I'd have a hard time justifying payment, though, without some very nice features.

I would use it very often, simply because I'm poor and don't have a DVD player. I watch everything on my computer.

PS3 upscaling is great. Even if I didn't have one, I'd choose a DVD player over the Wii's shitty UI.

Re: Do you even want DVD on Wii?

It was funny, right before PS2 was released I thought "Cool, I can take my DVD player out of the living room and just hook up my PS2!" and I did.......and then quickly brought back my DVD player. So when the PS3 was coming out, I left my DVD player right where it was. But, low and behold, I was GREATLY surprised when I popped a DVD in! It was far more superior to my DVD player and I finally was able to get rid of a piece of equipment! I highly doubt that my Wii will be able to top my PS3 playback of DVD's and therefore I could care less if the Wii can play DVD's.

Re: Do you even want DVD on Wii?

The things I own that can play DVDs:

PS3 (DVD upscaling plus Blu-Ray. my PS3 for playing movies)
XBox 360 (Albeit a dead one. I heard that MS are adding upscaling to this)
PC (With stupidly loud speakers for annoying family and neighbours alike)
Laptop (Incredible for train journeys if your battery can hold up)
PS2 (it's loaned out to a friend but I still technically own it)
There are also 2 regular DVD players in the house and a broken one somewhere

(And just editing these in. They aren't DVD players but they can play movies:

PSP (UMDs are dirt cheap now and Memory Sticks hardly cost a lot of money either so you can upload stuff to a PSP if you want. Screen is a bit small for some though)
Video iPod (They are big enough to hold several movies but why you would want to watch a movie on such a tiny screen is byeond me)
DS (It's possible and there are certainly SD cards big enough to hold a movie. Not sure I would want to watch a movie on a DS through due to screen size and quality of the speakers though))

So really the Wii being able to play DVDs hardly excites me. I guess it would be good for kids who can't afford a DVD player but you can get a player for less than £20 now anyway.

Re: Do you even want DVD on Wii?

With how common DVD functionality is at this point, and how cheap the technology has become, it wouldn't matter at all to me. We have multiple computers with DVD drives, PS2, Xbox and Xbox 360, not to mention standard DVD players in every room that has a TV in it.

It'd be cool feature, but I don't see adding DVD functionality to the Wii driving sales beyond the already high demand. It was a big selling point in the PS2 era because the technology was still relatively young and expensive (main reason I bought my PS2, tbh, I had been out of gaming since the SNES days)...at this point, I'm willing to bet that most people have more than one device in their home that already fills that function. I don't see too many people buying Wii's to primarily play DVDs, at least not like the PS2 was (where I knew a few people that did just that)...
I'm a slow motion accident, lost in coffee rings and fingerprints...

I'm not really talking about it from a 'sell more wiis!' perspective.
