  • PS2 RPG suggestions

OK, so I said the other day I'm restocking RPGs. I'm looking out for PS2 ones in particular. Gonna order a copy of SMT: Nocturne and probably get all the SMT games I can find first (It was stupid of me to sell any of them in the first place), but I'd like to hear some suggestions outside of SMT, Final Fantasy and Xenosaga. There's probably a few others I haven't played, I'm still waking up and can't think of them. I think the other ones I liked were on other consoles, though. But I just have the PS2 for now, so they're beside the point.

I'm exempting Xenosaga pretty much because the second game was such a heap of crap I can't keep going on with the story. I'll go watch the anime later or something.

Anyway, your suggestions please, I'm off to work.

Dark Cloud, if you consider it; I remember trying a demo of it a long time ago and being very interested in it, although I have never managed to pick up a copy.

I strongly recommend Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. I think it's available as a Greatest Hits version so you should be able to get it pretty cheap.

Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria has gotten mixed reviews, I enjoy it so far but haven't gotten very far into it yet.

Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 are fun, although not really pure RPGs due to the action/platformer elements. You don't have to be super twitchy to finish them, though.
Defeated: Maat, Divine Might, Fenrir, Kirin, Cactrot Rapido, Xolotl, Diabolos Prime, Kurrea, 9/10 Dynamis Bosses (missing Tav), Promathia, Proto-Ultima, Proto-Omega, 4 Jailers, Apocalypse Nigh, 6/6 Nyzul Bosses
      RDM90, PLD90, DRG90, COR90, SCH90, BLU54
All Nations Rank 10, ZMs & PMs Complete, AUMs Complete, Captain, Nyzul Floor 100 (5 Weapons, 4 WS), Medal of Altana, WotG Mission 15, 1/3 Addons Complete, 9/9 Abyssea Main Quests, 6/6 Caturae

RADIATA STORIES RADIATA STORIES RADIATA STORIES!!!

LOVED that fucking game. The way all the NPCs have their own home/jobs/schedules was sooooo cool.

If you've played it already then idk.

You've probably played it already, but I still feel Disgaea deserves a mention.

BBQ, episode 2 of Xenosaga is actually worth sitting through. True, the battle system was horrid compared to the 1st game (and 3's wasn't much better) but the story really got good in 2, right up to the end in 3. However if you honestly didn't find it fun then don't bother, but it wasn't crap by any stretch of the imagination.

                It was just horrendously complex.

More like horrendously simple. The 2nd game is the epic fail that it is because of complaints that the first was too complex for too many people.

I would recommend picking up Xenosaga 3. They predicted that most people would ignore the 2nd game and included a full story summary of it that you can watch before starting the game, and the 3rd game is actually pretty good. Not as good as the first, but still thoroughly enjoyable.

                        Re: PS2 RPG suggestions

Okami is much more of an action game than it is an RPG. It's very much a Zelda clone; and I meant that in the best possible way.

I have a very hard time recommending the PS2 version if you're planning on ever buying a Wii, though. Wii brush + 16:9 = incredible.

                          Re: PS2 RPG suggestions

Disgaea I've played, enjoyed it, gonna pick up the reissue of it on DS or PSP later. I do see La Pucelle Tactics out there every now and again, might grab it. I really just prefer that genre on handhelds for some reason.

TGM, I won't flog you for suggesting Magna Carta, but I already made the mistake of purchasing it once. Also, FFX-2 was awesome and i don't care wbat anyone says. I still owe Trema a beating.

I've played all the Final Fantasy games, I just need to rebuild the library. Well, Ok, I haven't played Crisis Core yet, but I has no PSP.

As for Xenosaga. I took a lot of willpower just to find it in me to finish the first one. Something about super-long cutscenes just turns me off from a game. To have the gameplay system I liked scrapped and have it replaced with a really gimped version of an esperish system really pissed me off. I liked the skill trees better.

If XenoIII has that synopsis, though, I may give it a spin. I did like the story. I particularly liked Albedo for some reason, probably because he had the best evil and insane laugh since Kefka.

I've heard tons of good things about Rouge Galaxy, I'll definately have to check it out. I scored a fresh copy of the SMT: Nocturne reissue at a newly-opened Gamestop today, so my game money was spent for this week, so I'll be grabbing Rouge Galaxy next week. New stores always get loaded with bulks of backlogs and used games. I got really lucky, it was the last copy of Nocturne they had. It is never leaving my collection again.

Now I just have to hunt down Devil Summoner and DDS1&2, which shouldn't be so difficult. I'd hunt down the first two Persona games, but I'm just gonna hope Atlus remakes them, cuz I'm not paying $150+ for a PSX game.

even though its a ps1 game (hey you can still play on ps2 amirite) try to find dragon warrior vii

really interesting story with a fun job class system

epic in length (was @ 110 hours at the end of disc 1)

seriously fun game that no one has ever played

Oh and BBQ, they addressed that problem in Xeno 3. You can pause and skip the cinematics in 3, and there's a huuuuuge database that details all the events of the 1st 2 games and other info.

I honestly didn't find any of the 3 games all that hard to understand. It's all rather overwhelming at first but it sinks in after a while. I just wish they hadn't messed with the battle system so much.

The 1st game's system was by far the best, especially in regards to leveling up and learning new abilities (oh good lord I wanted to shoot them for breaking up the skills into various keys... plus in 3 I found the characters to be retardedly weak in battle no matter how much STR you piled on)
