PS3 News: Square-Enix: "Big Announcement Prepared For FFVII"

It is not for the long-rumored PlayStation 3 remake of the PS1 RPG classic, Final Fantasy VII. But what if it was...? Yep, it's baaaaaaack!

The rumor has once again returned, thanks to translated information taken from Japanese gaming magazine, Dengeki. According to the beloved character designer for the legendary franchise, Tetsuya Nomura, "a big announcement is being prepared for Final Fantasy VII," and it has nothing to do with the scheduled release of "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete." The announcement won't come at E3 next week, but at Square-Enix's private party - the weirdly labeled "DKS3713" - in August. Okay, so we've heard promising stuff like this before; it gets us all worked up and hopeful, and then they reveal some PSP spin-off or something, and we're all disappointed again. So it's probably not a good idea to start believing in what many are saying is the impossible, but...we can't help but cross our fingers once more.

We had heard earlier this year that Square-Enix had more to announce regarding FFVII, but they never issued any details on the subject. Since that time, the remake rumor craze has died down, but now it's back in full force. Could this really be it? Could the remake we've all wanted for years become a reality?

Call me naive, but I was sold the moment i saw their "tech demo."

You don't waste a tech demo on an extremely popular(and old), game unless you have an Ace up your sleeve. That aside, unveiling a demo for a game fans have been begging to see remade is practically like slapping raw meat on your back and shaking your ass in front of hungry wolves.

I thought it was appropriate. That tech demo dangled a rather juicy morsel in front of the fans; S-E has to know they'll never get any peace as a result. I think the remake--while being drawn out--is more real than rumour.

I've been saying for years that they will do a remake. The game was a huge hit and gamers that played back in their youth will pony up the cash for the nostalgia factor. Gamers that didn't get to play it and probably won't play it now because the graphics aren't the best, will want to play the remake to see what all the fuss is about. Then the merchandising that would go with it..... It's a win-win situation for SE. I just don't know why they've taken so long to do it.

The first tech demo for a 3d game that Squaresoft did showed FF6 characters in full 3d battle running on a N64 SGI 'prototype.'

I don't recall ever buying a FF6 remake. They use these well known characters because they are so well known, they make the best 'look what we can do now' since you look back at what they were instead of looking at something new.

The presence of the demo means nothing, and what there was turned out to be Advent Children. While there could be a remake, and of the original Playstation Final Fantasies 7 is the one most needing an update, the presence of the demo really means nothing.

The tech demo was shown several months after Advent Children's release.

Nomura has said countless times that he'd like to remake FFVII. Also, that was a pretty damn expensive tech demo. Tech demos have become games.

SE has a tendancy to remake RPGs.

Let's go over the sequence of events here.

Final Fantasy I and II repolished, remastered and new content on PSP.
Final Fantasy III debuts in the US on Nintendo DS
Final Fantasy IV has been remade and is set to release in the US July 27th.
The people who remade FFIII and FFIV are working on remakes for FFV and FFVI

What number comes next?

How long is Yoichi Wada going to keep feeding us bull shit and just come out and admit it? It would fire up the fan base and probably get people buying up more SE games just to tame the anticipation.

SE has a tendancy to remakecontract others to port RPGs.

There is a difference, a very large one in fact, between a port and a remake. What has come out on the Playstation, GBA, DS and PSP are the results of contracting another company to port 8 and 16 bit FF games. Oh there are a few new things thrown in to try and get a few idiots to buy the same game again and again and again, but they are for the most part direct ports.

What everyone wants is a remake. NEW graphics, (that alone is no small feat), a NEW translation, a NEW edit of the story to incorporate changes that were introduced in the expansion of the FF7 universe. They want a different project. It would be akin to creating FF7 from scratch.

You say the next logical one is 7? Perhaps if all SE is doing is counting on their toes. 7 and beyond run on modern hardware. 6 and previous originally did not. 7+ are available to everyone who played 12, they have since made 1-6 the same. There is most likely a reason they keep stopped at 6.

I'm not saying there won't be a 7 remake, but that there has been nothing that makes it a foregone conclusion.
