        Re: Persona 4

One example: In the original, people could listen to the character's voices instead of having to read what they were saying! Wow, that's a pretty big difference. Especially in action scenes!

Good English dub > Good Japanese dub w/ Subtitles > Bad English dub

If they do a good translation, with voice actors that match the original versions pretty closely and they don't muck up the scripts for the lulz, I don't see how the original dub could possibly give you the closest thing to the original experience since you can't even understand what they're saying.

One of the reasons that I prefer the JP voices and English subtitles is that the JP actors really get into that shit! LOL They take voice acting over there as a honor. Here its just another way to make a buck. I just don't feel the passion in the English voice acting.........and let's face it some of those JP actors are awesome vocal abilities too! LOL

But like I said, I just need to learn more Japanese so I can stop buying translated crap.
Undubs ftw, if you have the means to play a burned copy of the game. A $30 boot disc is probably cheaper than a few years of Japanese classes.

Yeah, that would fall under "bad english dub." The real issue is, if you got an English dub of that caliber, which one would you prefer?

I definately prefer a good English dub over Japanese. Although, one example where I preferred the Japanese voicing was in Phatasy Star Universe with Ethan, his voice acting was terribad!

Exactly, if you can get a great English dub, what's really the point of having the JP dub instead unless you're a complete Japanophile or something? I consider Persona 3's quality on par of that of Cowboy Bebop or Metal Gear Solid's english dubs. Atlus learned to take this shit seriously.

But really, I've never taken presentation in games too seriously. I see people get worked up about the storylines in games like Soul Calibur - a game in which the entire point its to hit the other guy and make him fall down. That's the whole premise, no epic storyline there. Rock'em Sock'em Robots. I could take this story in comic book panels and be satisfied, but people crab for CG cutscenes and its no small wonder the quality of the franchise has plummeted so bad they need Yoda and Darth Vader to sell it now. And more cleavage and cameltoe, can't forget that.

I'm just thankful there's a company in this industry that takes so much pride it what they do they present it like pros from start to finish. Every company out there could stand to learn from Altus, even the biggest publishers out there.

I don't really care about Persona as I was never into the series, but Atlus can go die for fucking up River City Ransom on GBA.

It gives me the closest thing to the original because I can hear the way they speak, not to mention I can also understand a big chunk of what they say, so subs are only there to help me get a better idea of the things I don't understand. Also there's no way you would miss on the particular entonations and emotions people transmit in the original language, subs or not.

And finally, you are also missing something about my particular case: Thankfully english isn't my first language. So, when choosing between two foreign languages I will always go for the original by default.

Woah there. It's good, but it's not that good. It does have some flaws, especially towards the beginning, and with some specific characters being worse than others (Ken, for example). I'd put it more on the level of Gundam; the English acting is pretty good, if not astounding. However, the localization overall was incredible. There were some parts where if you had told me that it was a game made in the US and intended to SEEM Japanese, I might've bought it; and that's a very very good thing.
