  • What console hardware revisions would you like to see?

So we all probably have little qualms with video game hardware, or things we'd like to see improved or added. What are they?

Personally, to start, I have to say STOP MAKING CURVED SURFACES. Seriously, you know what I could do with my PS2 and Gamecube? Put the gamecube on top of the PS2! You know what happened then? I could fit them both on the damn shelf! You know what happened when I couldn't get the PS2 to sit well on top of the Xbox? I couldn't put the Xbox on the shelf. You know what happened when I didn't have my Xbox hooked up? I didn't buy any Xbox games!

Making consoles that are designed to be vertical is also stupid as hell, but as long as you give us an option to have it sitting down like it should be, that's fine.

As for revisions I'd like to see made to specific consoles:

Wii: Just firmware patch it so we can use the SD slot as system memory instead of just the "Outside media" we have now. A USB hard drive would be very nice, but only if someone was making an MMO (Pokemon Online, anyone?). A wireless nunchuk and an "off" switch on controllers (instead of having to turn the entire console off) would also be good.

PSP: I simply have absolutely no interest in this as a portable console; especially not at its current price. However, as a home console, I could probably enjoy it at least as much as the aforementioned Xbox, or possibly even my GameCube. Without having to have a screen, battery, or other requirements of a portable, a fair amount of cost could probably be shaved off. That or give the PS3 the ability to play UMD media, including PSP games.

PS3: As mentioned, remove the damned curve top. The ability to play PSP games would also be very nice. Going beyond that, a smaller version would be nice, although the technology for that might not exist quite yet. I also still stand by Paper Cup.: The case for the PS3 laptop ; a PS3 laptop would be an absolute killer.

GameCube: I'm honestly not sure if I would bother anymore, but below are my ideas for a GCp, if Nintendo were to manufacture one:

Think wavebird. A wireless gamecube controller. A fairly hefty center, but still light enough that it's comfortable to use. Fits well in the hands. Could easily be made to fit in a pocket as well as any other handheld, while still containing all the computing power you need. The screen would be made to slide out the back of the controller, so it can be fairly large and not get in the way. The disk could be inserted on the bottom, a simple flip up disk cover would do. Technically speaking, it's not too amazing or interesting.

However, there is plenty of possibility. It could be done in new colors, to fit better with the Wii. It could be made Bluetooth; and Nintendo could update Wii firmware; to allow it to be used to play Gamecube games on the Wii. And that's really where I see the biggest potential on this, it would bridge the gap between handheld and TV playing in the biggest way since Super Game Boy. (yes, I know there was the Game Boy Player for the Gamecube, but it wasn't the same)

Imagine-- you're going home, have nothing to do, and pull out your gamecube portable. You play a game you didn't think to get the first time around, and are enjoying it. You walk in the door, save your game, pop out the disk, and slide it into your Wii. The controller syncs with the Wii, and the Wii turns the PGC into a Wavebird. It reads from a bit of flash memory on the card, and recognizes it as a memory card (alternatively, they could just add a memory card port on the end of the controller, it's small enough). You've just gone, relatively seamlessly, from playing on a a portable console, to a home console experience. It could also be made to transfer sound and video to a receiver you'd plug in to the TV, which would also be useful for the next thing--

You go to a friend's house. They have some multiplayer game. You decide to play together. Your PGCs sync. His transmits video and sound to yours, yours transmits button presses back. Or, with an added wifi component made to function as a Gamecube network adapter, you pop in separate copies of PSO and play people over the internets. The possibilities for a Portable Gamecube go on and on.

The DS I don't see as needing any improvements (that wouldn't be better off simply being a new console), and the 360 I just don't care about. The PS2, while I think the slim model is positively retarded, I don't see as ever getting any new versions.

Well in the Xbox 360 not sure exactly what is wrong with it but i remember Microsoft is refusing to fix the problem that many FFXI players get when in Beseiged. Lot of 360 players get DC'd or freeze. Someone told me what exactly was the problem with the 360 but i cant remember what it was. Only that Microsoft didnt want to spend money to make the needed revisions on the console.
And yes i dont like the vertical thing. I like stacking my games horizontaly whenever possible.

Yeah I'd like it if they made the PS3 flat, specially if that meant better air circulation.

Also the way the Gamecube is made where the cd most be inserted in through the top means i cant leave anything on the top of my GC. i like the tray that slides out.
The 360 is also to loud. Id love a quiter system.

yeah, the GC's flip top was only acceptable to me because, again, on top of the PS2, and because it wasn't really "standard" at that point to have a slide tray. However, the PS2, Xbox, 360, Wii, and PS3 since then have all either had slot loading or disc trays, and it should stay that way. Which is one of the many reasons I find the slim PS2 so incredibly retarded.

Re: What console hardware revisions would you like to see?

Yeah i know the Wii isnt like that.. but i dont have a Wii so changes to it wont effect me. Atleast, not yet anyway.
However, i have played the wii and i did notice something. When you first pick up the controller sometimes it is hard to find the cursor. You dont know where it is if your not used to it the curso flies off screen. If it was like a comp monitor where the mouse could go no further than the screen that might help people be able to pick it up and find their way through the menu sooner.
