  • Final Fantasy Tactics A2

Well I just started playing it and its a lot better than Tactics-GBA. Unlocking jobs is basically what I'm doing now. I got rdm open but need to work on Fencer in order to actually change to rdm. I did find an ability that I wish they would put in FFXI though! Monkey Grip!! Able to use 2 handed weapons with 1 hand! OMG ssswweeeeeet! War/nin with Monkey Grip would be awesome! Probably die like crazy but would still rock. LOL

Anyone else playing it right now?

I really, really, really, really, really want to play this game. Unfortunately, I have no clue where my DS is...

I'm playing it right now, LOVED the FFXI nudge at the beginning of the game!

I don't know what I think of the new races yet, but besides that, lots of fun to be had.

EDIT: Did anyone else catch That the Librarian's name was Mr. Randall? As in Newt? It makes sense to me, at least. It would explain how the magicbookodoom got in Luso's library

I would love it if it didn't have the judge crap. Really, I despise the restrictions. I want a FFT clone on the DS

there is already one of these on the PSP. when i heard that news it was about as close as i'll ever get to wanting a PSP. i really wish they would have released it on the DS.

i think i know more people that dislike the judge system than like it, but i was a big fan of it in FFTA. i haven't played any A2 yet, but i know about the changes. I think they did a good thing by making it so your units aren't in jail for several battles after breaking a rule. However, the reducing the severity of the penalty might just trivialize the judge system all together. The thing that i liked about the judge system is that it really reward players for having a variety of units that could be set up with different groups to overcome particularly harsh Laws. i liked seeing "No Bladed Weapons" because that meant i could bust out my army of Illusionists and decimate a group with stage-wide area of effect magic. It made it fun and worthwhile to have a lot of different classes that worked well together.

or you could always just walk around for a few days until the laws changed to something that didn't negatively affect your "main" group.

have to admit though this time around the Judge system is not as bad as in FFTA

I'm enjoying the hell out of the judge system. I like that little extra challenge.

                      Re: Final Fantasy Tactics A2

In the first one you could sometimes make the judge system an advantage.

Normally the CPU won't break the law (except in certain scripted encounters). Which is handy in a boss fight where the enemies all spam aoe charm... unless it's illegal. Flans, bombs and dragons can all be made a lot wimpier by banning their favored element (especially the flans' nasty trick of nuking themselves to heal). If there's several of the same job in a fight, ban that job's abilities and they won't use them.

But there's an exception to this: the CPU can still break the law involuntarily. Like when you make them berserk and physical attacks are against the law.

Since I don't have a DS, I can only speculate whether those kinds of tricks carry over. But it might be worth a shot.

                        Re: Final Fantasy Tactics A2

The Judge System is SE's take on randomizing field objectives to keep them fresh without going the Nippon Ichi route of random dungeon generation. In the end, it achieves the goal of keeping the game fresh and I honestly love that kind of element in any SRPG.

Fire Emblem has its own take - instead of randomizing fields or battle elements, they place certain conditions you may meet a new character that will join your party. On one field in Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken, you could have met a surviving guard that served Eliwood's father if you were on a turn under snowy weather conditions, but if you arrived on the very same point of the field when it wasn't snowing, you meet a samurai who wants to join you in battle, but also wishes to duel Eliwood to the death later on.

Then there were characters who you could help and save and became party members with detailed stories relevant to the plot, but if you didn't get to them in time, they just died and never got to be part of the story.

Of course, the hallmark of every FE game is that your characters are very, very human and can die or be fatally wounded, unable to continue fighting in the game. You had to choose your actions wisely. Tactics Orge and the original FFT picked up on this idea, but gave you a window of opportunity to revive the unit before the unit permanently perished. There were no ressurections in Fire Emblem, however, they just died.

In FFTA, most of the time it was impossible to lose a character to death, but if you fight in the Jagds where Judges could apply no laws, you could potentially lose characters to death permanently as well. But on the Judge fields, the only risk was being carded and sent to prison, which could be just as bad in some spots of the game.

This is why I love SRPGs - they are almost all this sadistic.

Well on the bright side if it was an older DS, you would be getting the slim model! There is a nice red/black model out there too. I got that for my daughter for christmas and then tried to trade her my white one for hers.

It was an older DS. I can't even find stylus for it anymore in shops, I have to order them online. I still want to find it for the games that were in it though... But I'm sure it will turn up eventually.
