Re: MMOs are to become PS3 new selling point
The other big reason for Backwards compatibility, besides the whole 'not having to keep two consoles' thing, is the fact that it gives a console a huge library at launch. This might not matter much to those of us who own a PS2, GC, and Xbox; but if you're new to games, or you are reestablishing a collection (for example; after having sold your games, or being destroyed in a fire etc.) the library is a huge benefit. For example, the PS2 probably has the single strongest software library of any platform ever (unless you count Microsoft Windows; and even that's debatable); if you haven't already had one, and you get a (backwards compatible) PS3 instead of just having a handful of good PS3 games that might interest you (GTA4, MGS4, and Burnout Paradise, for instance), you also have the old console's games (GTA3, Vice City, San Andreas; MGS2, MGS3; Burnout 1-3) to play.
