some of the first releases of PS3 are backwards compatible, but the ones released as of late, and from here on out, wont have the function, and honestly that turns me off to wanting one completely. -.-

Seriously? Wow. I had actually thought of maybe getting the 40GB model, just because I didn't get enough money to go buy me a 360 Elite. But if these newer released ones aren't Backwards Compatible, fuck that. There's nothing on the PS3 for years that I want. Things like FFXIII and KH and the like are entirely too far away to bother now with it. And no, before anyone suggests anything currently out: I've researched it all and not a bit of it appeals to me.

Incorrect. 40GB PS3 does not play PS2 games. Only PSone games.

if you scroll down it gives a chart that tell you that the 40gb is not backwards compatible at all, and that the others are software emulated, (first release was hardware)

and on top of that Sony stated that the next batch and beyond, will have backwards compatibility removed entirely.

That is also incorrect; the 80GB unit still features software/hardware PS2 backwards compatibility and will relaunch next month. Sony had originally planned to discontinue the model completely but did not expect it to continue to outsell the $100 cheaper 40GB model.

I would love to know why they decided that. There is not real good reason to not have backwards compatability. It is one of the biggest selling points they could have.

Because far more people were complaining about the price of the console than were interested in it for PS2 compatibility. When you sell over 120,000 units of a console you don't really need to be as concerned about backwards compatibility the next generation.

Why is backwards compatability even an issue? Is everyone tossing their old consoles in the trash as soon as the next gen is available? I still have every console I've ever owned dating back to the NES and I still use most of them regularly.

Why's it a big issue? Because Sony made it one when they mocked the 360 for not having full BC and boasting about how the PS brand would always be backwards compatible. Just like they mocked MS for releasing multiple SKUs. Oops, embarassing much?
I'll buy PS3 if and when they put BC back in. I have no desire to keep every gaming system I've ever bought under my TV.
