  • MMOs are to become PS3 new selling point

I saw this article with John Smedley, the San Diego-based president of Sony Online Entertainment about MMOs becoming the new selling point for the PS3. I just hope this means SE will make a PS3 version of FFXI...well if they arent still mad at Sony for dropping the hard drive for the PS2.

Well SE has already stated that it is highly unlikely they will make a PS3 version becaus eof the time it would take. The following link is a interview where the question was brought up. Should be the right one, but I'm at work and it won't let me review it lol.

I do remember that article (I am at work also and cant view the link). I can see why they said highly unlikely, they were burned bad by Sony when Sony discontinued the PS2 with the hard drive port. I just hoping this will sway the highly unlikely to maybe we should give Sony another chance.

I still very doubtful, but I have hope.

Its highly unlikely, SE's development focus is now multiplatform and part of that is because, well, Sony burned SE hard on the PS2 HDD. Right around the time they got burned, they started playing nice with Nintendo again. Kinda hard to overlook the timing of that.

SE knows they're a company that can get what they want, where they want because they are a force amougst the big third PT and where thier content goes, people go. Sony's fumble just made them realize the problem with their history of exclusivity to one console, not to mention Sony and MS's insane quest to jack up development costs all around.

If SE can make a big enough profit by making another port for PS3, you bet they will be more than happy to bury the hatchet.

Sure they got burned. But business is business.

Sony Online Entertainment != SE. Just because Sony is aiming to get more MMOs on their platform doesn't mean they have control over FFXI. It's also pretty unlikely that they'd try to encourage (read: give tons of cash to) SE to make FFXI for PS3, given it's age and lack of popularity.

Age yes, but lack of popularity?

Which MMOs are more popular then FFXI besides WoW and Lineage?

Also, this just means there will be a new Everquest coming out =(

(though in all seriousness, I'm sure a lot of 'big name' MMOs will start popping up soon)

In new players, yes. Old players will not want to switch to a new platform (see: the fact that FFXI still supports the PS2 at all)

FFXI's existing subscribers are unlikely to move from where they are, and FFXI doesn't get too many new players anymore.

Re: MMOs are to become PS3 new selling point

I thought the main reason SE didn't do anything for the PS3 is because everything they make for the PS2 runs perfectly fine on both systems. It's not like when they added the 360 to their list of playable consoles where they were able to grab an entirely different market, because people can, and have been playing on PS3s since the PS3's launch (give or take a few patches).

FFXI certainly does not lack popularity seeing as it's still more popular then many new MMOs and I doubt that's the reason *SE* refuses to make a PS3 exclusive version.

Re: MMOs are to become PS3 new selling point

No, when the PS3 came out it had problems with FFXI. That's been fixed since, but obviously that wouldn't have happened with a PS3 version. EDIT: forgot to mention, 40GB ps3 doesn't support backwards compatibility at all.

Anyway, there are benefits to making a dedicated version for PS3, similar to the 360 and PC versions.

And subscriber count != popularity. FFXI making a PS3 release-- even with completely revamped graphics-- would be unlikely to make a huge splash in PS3 sales. Honestly, WoW would probably be the only MMO popular enough to have much of an effect. Even three or four major (read: FFXI size) MMOs wouldn't have a giant impact on console sales, compared to major games like GTA, Smash Bros., and Halo.

I didnt read anyone mentioning that SOE = SE and/or Sony had control over FFXI.

Why would SE make an MMO to promote the PS3, because that's what a branch of Sony wants to do?

If SoE makes another MMO for a Playstation console, that concerns me.

Its not that i'm worried that it would be bad, because I actually did somewhat like Everquest Online Adventures and thought it did good despite its limitations. Its just that if it doesn't sell well first go, Sony's not going to back it and it will sputter and fade. When the company won't back its own first party, thats never a good thing.

Like what? Slightly longer draw distance and a sorta better picture?

Whaaaaaaaaat? Seriously, where in the hell are you pulling this crap from.

Who is saying that a PS3 FFXI would have a major splash on PS3 sales? I know I certainly didn't say it. And yes subscriber count = popularity because if so many people are playing the game that it ranks as one of the highest rated MMOs out there then that means it's a popular MMO.

If you read every word, I am hoping they will make a port since Sony is getting serious about supporting MMOs.
