    Re: Zero Punctuation

Yahtzee's stuff is always entertaining and occasionally reveals a nugget of insight that isn't found elsewhere, but informationally it serves only as the "grain of salt" with with to take the other, usually artificially positive, reviews on the internet. It's always worth watching for the laugh though.

      Re: Zero Punctuation

I think the problem with entertainment-based journalistic ventures such as this is the writer/reviewer tries to make it about himself instead of objectively looking at the material. If I want that, I can go to Neo-GAF or IGN and just watch the morons on their forums do it.

Its supposed to be an objective look at a product people may be interested in purchasing. Look for the good, look for the bad or the flawed and tell us about it.

This really is just an extreme and self-absorbed look at video games, not all that terribly unlike EGM does, even if Yahtzee's vocabulary and intelligence far exceeds the entire staff of that publication or ZD publications in general.

I'll give him that he didn't pass off a few sentences as a review, which seems to be industry standard these days. Still,m I don't consider something with no objectivity to it to be much of a review.

How so? Smash works very differently from traditional fighters (duh), but the standard button configurations work well with how the game works. You've got 3 perfectly viable controller options (Wii Remote on its own as a 4th, but it's harder to use and has limitations the other controls don't...) and you can even customize your button configuration now. Wiimote + Nunchuk is odd as hell but there are people that like it. Those that played a lot of Melee are comfortable with the Game Cube controller, and those that like neither the Wiimote nor the GC Controller can use the Classic Controller, which resembles an SNES controller and thus a PS2 controller as well. Where's the problem?

There are a lot of hitches in the mechanics that still have yet to be fixed and piss me off (such as doing a smash when I mean to do a normal hit, and pushing the stick 1 way but still attacking in the other direction)

Meh. It made me chuckle a bit (mostly his goofy accent and words) but I would hardly call it a review. I'm not going to defend SSBB, because that's pointless and trying to change people's opinions online is comparable to trying to have a 3-some with a brickwall.

Personally though, listening to some British guy insult a video game for 4 minutes isn't really all that entertaining.

First off, his "reviews" are supposed to be taken with a grain of salt. He's not actually giving a review of the game, he's giving a SATIRICAL OPINION. Seriously, get don't get your fanboy undies in a bundle...it's called HUMOR.

Sorry, but the problem is you, not the game =/ If you get Smashes instead of tilts accidentally, then go to control config and change the C-Stick's setting from "Smash" to "Attack." That'll let you do tilts with the C-stick and you'll never have to worry about accidentally pulling off a Smash again. It also lets you do down aerials without fastfalling. As for pushing the stick one way but attacking in the other direction...that just doesn't happen.

Yahtzee sucks at the game and fighters in general, and also stated he didn't bother with the manual. It's pretty clear he and his friends were all button mashing, so it's only logical that he'd be able to do the exact same thing by throwing his control down a flight of stairs.

                          Re: Zero Punctuation

I use the Wii mote since I don't have any GC controllers and can't stand using the classic. It's annoying as hell that if I try to attack the moment I move the stick it will be a smash.

Excuse me for loving Capcom for giving us the wonder that was SFA3 and Power Stone II, which I still find vastly superior to Smash Bros. Honestly, the at this point what draws me to SSBB is not the fighting >_>

If I wanted a good fighter I'd pop in 1 of two above games (too bad I don't have my DC anymore though... not that it mattered given that finding those two games now is like a needle in a hay stack)

Brawl is certainly entertaining, but I personally find it far from being a great fighter. Oh but you can't say anything bad about Nintendo or you'll be lynched these days... (pisses me off to no end too, since Nintendo more or less pulls the same shit Sony does but it's OK to bash Sony and MS and but god help you if you Bash Nintendo. 'cause clearly they can do no wrong and everything they make is perfect)

You also can't do a regular attack, even after you've started moving-- it has to be Side+Attack. It's a matter of control, though. Smash Bros. controls are pretty simple, compared to other fighters; simplicity in video game controllers almost always means that you're going to have some multipurpose button annoying you at some point. (ACTION BUTTONS, I'M LOOKING AT EVERY GODDAMN ONE OF YOU.)

Anyway, you're right, Brawl isn't really a fighting game. There aren't health bars, you score with ring outs. There aren't combos, you attack by combining one of two buttons with the control stick. There isn't even a a separate button for high/low attacks, last I checked, you just have to use what is there. Brawl is really only a fighting game as much as Mario Kart is a racing game. That doesn't mean it isn't damn fun, it's just different.

EDIT: Actually, Brawl is even less of a fighting game than Mario Kart is a racing game. In Mario Kart, you still need to come in first; if Brawl were a racer, the goal would be not to fall off the side of the track.

Quite easy to forget the Gamecube days, isn't it? Y'know, when it was the complete and total opposite of what you just said. Heavens help a Nintendo "fanboy" (oft just referred to as a fanboy) who was on the Internet, as well. Burn the witch!

Prime example of ye olde "anti-fanboism." Note how the "fanboy" is portrayed, as well as his ultimate fate. This was the expected of all of those who dared advocate Nintendo in those times.

I still prefer to call myself an "anti-anti-fanboy."

                                You have 4 options:
                                1) Learn to control your analog stick inputs like Melee players had to.
                                2) Learn to use the Classic Controller.
                                3) Re-map the D-pad to "Attack" so it's the equivalent of a C-stick.
                                4) Buy/borrow a GameCube controller.
It's not a fault in the game's design if you can't adapt to any of those.

To be clear, I'm not arguing because Brawl is a Nintendo game or because I love Brawl. What bothers me is that you say the game's controllers are bugged, or that SFA3 and Power Stone II are better games, or that Brawl is far being a great fighter without any reasoning to back it up, just because it's not your cup of tea.

It's not even like Capcom is the master of fighters anyways. I prefer Guilty Gear and SNK games myself. But that's another topic entirely. I used to like MvC2 but then I realized how hideously broken the game is on many levels; you can only play it by picking using a handful of characters and exploiting certain teams and strategies.

Anyways, many people overlook one aspect of Smash that really sets it apart from the crowd: Team battles. (No, not Free For Alls. Free For Alls are always unbalanced, with players randomly ganging up on each other.)
