    Doolittle! DOOLITTLE!

This is quite honestly the biggest motivation I have ever had to buy a PS3.

Downloadable content for a multiplatform game is a reason to buy a PS3? :p

Not that I necessarily disagree (I have Rock Band for the PS3, along with 41 downloadable songs for the game), but it seems odd to single out this particular item and say this is a good reason to want it.

Granted, if you own a Wii, then screwed doesn't even begin to describe what you are if you want to play Rock Band, since the Wii version (like its PS2 counterpart) is highly gimped.

When that content is only available on two platforms, and I'd only consider buying one of them? yeah, kinda works like that.

It's fucking Doolittle. I'm guessing you haven't heard of it, or you hate music.

As to owning a Wii, this is really the first thing I've felt screwed on. I had considered Rock Band before this, but there weren't enough songs I recognized or enjoyed. Doolittle is an injection of 15 awesome, awesome songs. The worst part is they really could've done downloads-- just put it on SD cards. I'm hoping they either announce a Rock Band expansion or Rock Band 2 reasonably soon; I really can't afford a PS3 right now.

Oh I've heard of it. Some great songs there to be sure, but eh, to each their own. I'm still googly-eyed over how many people love Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones. Can't get people to stop playing it online, and it's one of the few songs that kicks me to the curb on vocals (less than 95% on Expert, whereas I can usually get 97-100% on most every other song).

SD cards have a big problem; they can be copied. Harmonix basically laid their cards on the table a couple weeks ago in an interview and said the reason the Wii version doesn't have downloadable content is the lack of hard drive support.

Considering they're up to 8 million song downloads for Rock Band, I can see why they're not wild about putting that content somewhere that everyone and their brother can pirate it.

The same could be said of, oh, I don't know, every computer storage method ever. Including hard drives.

The idea that having SD cards is going to making piracy more rampant is downright silly, unless they aren't putting any protection on the files as is.

On the (off)topic of being screwed if wanting to play Rock Band, try being in the EU where there's no all-in-one pack.

Current official prices if you want game, drums, 1x guitar and mic:

            US: $170
            UK: £180!! ((about $350 ))
Oh, Warp. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways...

It costs more to play Rock Band than it does to buy a Wii in Europe.

I do not really like rhythm games. Maybe it is because I have no rhythm.

Not a fan of Rock Band. Played it drunk at a party once for about 30 mins and got bored. meh.

But Doolittle! One of my best good favorite albums!

It's not a simple matter for most people to uninstall a hard drive off a 360 or PS3 and connect it to a computer that can read the contents, let alone pirate it.

Taking a SD card out of a Wii and popping it into a thumb drive for your computer takes less than a minute unless your Wii and computer are across the house from one another.

The idea that having SD cards is going to making piracy more rampant is downright silly, unless they aren't putting any protection on the files as is.
How would you content-lock a download? Encode it with your internal system ID or something? Possible I suppose, but easily defeated.

Re: Holy crap, something that actually makes me want a PS3

I don't like Guitar Hero or Rock Band for two simple reasons:

                      They're obnoxious.
                      They're not really musical.

Both are really just Frequency from PS2, which ripped off DDR to start with. Instead of stomping on panels, you play pseudo-instruments. And if you want to get technical, we can point out the Beatmania games as predecessors.

Only difference is for the precursors was that they were far less mainstream. For games like this to get popular in the US, they had to sell out to mainstream acts. Frequency, DDR and Beatmania weren't nearly as mainstream as these games are.

But I hate the obnoxious aspects of most of this games. I didn't particularly like my neighbor waking me up with The Devil Went Down to Georgia at Sunday 8am on these damned games. Nor do I like the concept that what players are doing is passed off as playing a guitar.

I didn't even like Donkey Konga. And Nintendo can usually get me to like anything.

yes, it is. Also, don't the 360/PS3 have memory cards of some sort?

Kinda like trying to keep them secure by putting them on a hard drive which is easily removed?

Are you kidding? DDR is pretty damn big in some places.

The problem isn't whether they are mainstream or not, the problem is whether people will enjoy the music or not. Obviously, more people enjoy rock music than techno and the like, here.

That's not a problem with the game. That's a problem with your neighbor being an asshole.

It's not. Not anymore than DDR passes for dancing, or FFXI passes for having a life, or any FPS passes for actually shooting things.

It's a game, with a theme, and abstract controls that make it easier for people to play (and possible for computers to recognize). It should be judged on how fun it is, not how good of a simulation it is; because it was never meant to be a simulation.

Rockband is like WoW has lots of kiddie appeal wherein GH is like FFXI more sophisticated.

. . . I thought I made the worst analogy in the world when I compared Kirby to Tarzan (don't ask), but I think Mal may have just beat me there.
