  • Games you like, from genres you hate

Most of us probably have a few genres we don't care about or actively dislike, how many have games within those genres that they love, though?

    Myself:

Racing- I hate racing games, but what I've played of the Burnout series has been extremely fun. It's probably the way it's made more engaging by the "slam your opponent into a goddamn wall" aspect.

Sports- Not counting Wii sports, I hate sports games, but I love Jet Grind Radio. There is just so much done right with that game. I used to like the Tony Hawk series, but it's gone through so many different versions now and there's no substantial difference between that and the demo I got from Pizza Hut for THPS on PSX a decade ago.

RTS- Command and Conquer. First and only. I think it's the control scheme, every other RTS I've played seems to be far too complex control wise, or in general be a PITA to manage, but C&C just works very well.

Smash Brothers. That fighting game fans insist that it's not a fighting game may have something to do with why.

Shooters: Jet Force Gemini and Mass Effect. The fact that ME actually has a deep, involved plot and is more or less a RPG with guns, probably saves it for me. Though I did discover the joy of shredding things with a Spectre Shotgun...

Shooters- Hatem, Halo series, love it.

Fighting Games- hate fighting games, no one plays them right, theres no point in even having combos when people just button mash :/ Super smash brothers and Soul Calibur are the only exceptions, i love those 2.

Racing- yeah yeah blah blah upgrade cars, crash shit u know u cant survive in real life but you keep on racing anyway. Only exception (and feel free to strangle me) Star wars Podracers... lol i dont know why but i had alot of fun, oh i also had a little fun with mario kart.

Interactive games- Uhhh... yeah, i used to hate crap like DDR and PIU and guitar hero and all that, i thought people looked really retarded hitting only 4 arrows, but i finally gave it a shot after a friend forced me into it one day since the arcade was empty...

...Now i have DDR home versions and metal red octane dance pads at home and now whenever i go to the arcade i like to show off to all the people in the crowd, being the person i thought looked retarded, but DDR is fun. Guitar hero is... ugh, Guitar Hero and I have this love/hate relationship. When im LFP or bored I'll pick up my guitar for the wii, and I'll own... >.> on easy mode lol... Whenever i try medium mode my fingers slip up and i get all these boos and then i fail...

Whoever came up with the bright idea of rock band needs to die... i don't know how you can make Avenged Sevenfold or Nightwish sound like Britney Spears and Hilary Clinton's impersonation of Genie in a bottle, but thats the crime committed when people (like my roomates who CANT sing) step up to the Rock band mic...

You pretty much covered the three genres I also don't like. I tried to like Starcraft, but I just couldn't get into it. I much prefer the laid-back, turn-based strategy approach. Since I don't enjoy driving in real life, simulations of driving in racing games don't do anything for me. I also dislike most organized sports, so sports games are out.

Edit: Oops, post went through before I finished. On RTS, I didn't mind Warcraft too much, maybe because it wasn't as fast paced. For sports games, I used to play them a long time ago... last one was Hardball III, shortly before the game cheated (hitting a home run on a sinker thrown towards the dirt is impossible). Racing though, I don't mind racing mini-games in RPGs and some other examples. But stand-alone where you're just driving cars in circles... bah, I say.

Because the genres the OP and I hate are similar, I'll be quoting him.

              Racing- Mario Kart or GTFO.

Sports- Not counting Wii Sports . . . I got nothing. Not even any of the Mario Sports games aside from Kart (Golf, Tennis . . . ).

              RTS- FFXII: Revenant Wings.

Re: Games you like, from genres you hate

Fighting Games: Guilty Gear, I have alot of fun with it and my friends even though I'm not good at it. I really dislike the 3D ones though for some reason. I don't know why.

FPS: I could never ever get into it. Everytime I tried I got killed . . . .alot . . . .correction, head shot ALOT. There was this one though called "War", that was fun when played against some friends

RTS: I really liked TA Kingdoms & Starcraft but could never get into Command & Conquer or Warcraft.

RPG: I enjoyed Baulder's Gate 2 ALOT, Valkyrie Profile 1, Okami (just amazing to me except for the ANNOYING dialogue),ZoE and FF11, but all the others usually strike me as boring.

Sports: None, there hasn't been ANYTHING I enjoyed so far in sports game. It's mainly the "Why not just do it in real life with some friends instead?" kinda of thing for me. However, Wii Sports is the only exception I'd make.

Racing: Mario Kart. Love all the little goodies you get to use. Can't stand the more realistic ones.

                    FREE, of course.

This is an serious edit: platformers and adventure games weren't at all mentioned, either.

I like Puzzle games such as Tetris and that Bubble game (name escapes me atm it's the one where you had baby dinosaurs shoot colored balls to make a pattern). Oh and a really old one is Lemmings, I enjoyed it >.> I guess a more modern version would be Worms?

                        The "bubble" game is Bust-A-Move.

And there's an updated (and quite good) version of Lemmings available on the PlayStation Network store for PS3 (I have it and love it lots).

                        ---

I have extremely eclectic tastes in games; I'll play just about anything, but I do tend to favor some genres over others.

I personally adore Rock Band, if only because it turns out I'm a decent singer. I'm not as much into DDR as I used to be though. Maybe just getting too old for it.

Racing games I tend to dislike, but I make exceptions for Gran Turismo for its hyper-production quality, and WipeOut for the adrenaline speed rush.

Sports games I generally dislike on principle, with the only notable exception being Super Dodge Ball (which barely qualifies as a sports game).

First person shooters have to be pretty good to catch my interest, too, but that's probably due more to burnout and way too many shooters being released recently than any severe personal antipathy.

Zempten, have you ever tried Frozen Bubble? I never bothered playing it, since I was never a big fan of Bust-A-Move's gameplay (it's ok, but not amazing), but I've heard tons of good things about it.

Never heard of Frozen Bubble before. I googled it and it looks alot similar to Bust-A-Move. Although it offers net play . . . .that seems really neat ^ ^

Might be a bit off topic . . .A LONG LONG LONG time ago I played this game where you basically get a piece of land and you have water drops falling down. You then configure your land into lakes/mountains and what not. It was on PC and very fun. I have no idea what the name is called, but do any of you remember something like this?

I'm intrigued by this new lemmings.

I seem to recall reading about title like that many many moons ago, but I can't for the life of me remember what it's called. I think I heard about it in an article maybe a year or two after the release of Pipe Dreams, because I remember thinking it was an interesting variant.

I'm intrigued by this new lemmings.
It's pretty neat. Similar to Lemmings 1, with an HD resolution facelift, and the same evilly fiendishly hard puzzle gameplay.
