Re: Do you still own a dreamcast?

The dreamcast wasn't defeated because it's competitors were better, it was defeated by PS2 hype. People held off on buying a dreamcast until the PS2 came out, and that destroyed it.

What the hell are you talking about.

Phantasy Star Online by Sega's Sonic Team studio was the first online console RPG in the world, and the fact that they made a 3D online action RPG work on dial-up was nothing short of phenomenal. It was not meant to be an MMORPG, it was meant to be picked up and played with friends, so comparing it to MMORPGs like you did earlier is absolutely ridiculous.

Skies of Arcadia by Sega's Overworks studio got RPG of the year just about everywhere.

Jet Grind Radio was a solid experience and pioneered the cel-shaded 3D graphics that are used throughout the industry. I can't remember which studio worked on the game, but it was an internal team at Sega for certain (it wasn't Smilebit since that formed later).

Rez by Sega's UGA studio with Tetsuya Mizaguchi is a brilliant unification of visuals and sound, and is regarded as one of the greatest games of all time.

Samba de Amigo, also by Sega's Sonic Team studio, was the Guitar Hero of the Dreamcast era with motion sensing controllers that seem to be all the rage now, but just about no one played it.

I'm going to stop here because I don't feel like listing more, but the point is, there were a large number of critically acclaimed games on Dreamcast in the short time it was around, many of them by Sega themselves. It was an excellent, developer friendly gaming platform with lots of great games. Blown-out-of-proportion hype of the PlayStation 2, rampant piracy of Dreamcast games, and mismanagement at Sega of Japan is why the console failed.

jwalton, there are definitely too many good ones to list, but Crazy Taxi deserves to be on the short list for sure.

Yeah, that was a really great game.

But just to re-emphasize how great the Dreamcast was:

          [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkEcCuwV_ko[/ame]

Granted, it's footage of the arcade version of Samba de Amigo, but the experience was duplicated perfectly at home on Dreamcast (sans crowd). Anyone who can sit there and say that that doesn't look fun, has no soul. Luckily, Wii owners will get a shot at playing the game in the coming weeks, though we won't have maracas controllers this time around...

Edit: Youtube is acting up, bleh

Yeah, and Diablo was free and kicked the ever loving shit out of it. I owned the DC, played a lot of the games, didn't care for most of them. That's my opinion and I'm entitled to it. That's great that you all enjoyed it so much, really because that's what counts in a video game system; people having fun. It's my personal belief however that SEGA always has been utter garbage and that's why it's been reduced to what it is now.

You know, I don't care that you don't like Phantasy Star Online, so much that you keep comparing it to unrelated stuff to drive your point home. First it was compared to an MMORPG, now it's something else entirely. Let's see here...

              1. Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast was also free to play online
              2. Comparing Diablo to Phantasy Star Online is as valid as comparing Baldur's Gate to Final Fantasy X

Re: Do you still own a dreamcast?

Then why does my copy of PSU Ver 2 ask for a subscription fee on top of the SEGA's internet fee on the case? Explain that.

You also have to pay them for each other one that's come out too. They all have subscription fees. My point about Diablo was that it was a solid, online RPG that was fun and free. I'm not really interested with carrying this on, I've already made my point about SEGA. (For the record I've owned every system they've ever made except the Saturn)

Re: Do you still own a dreamcast?

Because Phantasy Star Online version 2 is where they started trying to get a monthly fee out of people? My statement is valid, Phantasy Star Online was free to play on Dreamcast. Just because you were late to the party and ignored most of the games on the platform doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about.

Oh and, I owned a Sega Saturn. Sega thought they were king shit after the Genesis was doing so well, and made the mistake of sticking in a lot of hardware that made it a superior console to the PlayStation in mere technical terms what with multiple CPUs and the like, but it was stupidly difficult to program for whereas the PlayStation was very developer friendly. The original PlayStation was not only easier to program for, but it also was prone to hardware failure during the initial batches with people having to run their consoles upside down due to disc reading problems, overheating, and a few other oddball cases. Numerous folks had to buy more than one PlayStation console during that generation, but with all the great games it had, people dealt with it.

Huh, this scenario sounds strangely familiar! Hmm...

Re: Do you still own a dreamcast?

Fact: The original model of PSX was designed with a 4 year shelf-life. Kutaragi himself admitted to this, which is why they later released the PSOne. That said, I never had any issues with mine and loved it dearly until the day it crapped out on me (I got a good 4-5 years out of it)

Oh and I see what you did there

Re: Do you still own a dreamcast?

I will tell you what killed the DC... I owned every game ever made for the system. thanks to the internet and the lil hackers at Echelon. back in 2001~ you was able to DL the ISO of any DC game you wanted and played them via the use of a "Boot Disk". I personally bought 1 DC game and owned over 100 games. I bought Alien Front Online. The 1st online console game to have VoIP... and on a 56k line It suck'd ass.

Unreal Tournament was the best online FPS ever on there,
                        Power stone was the shit
Shenmue 1 & 2 was ahead of its time,
and other RPG's on the system were great.
