  • What do you want to see in the Next-gen consoles, hardware wise?

Talking purely about hardware; accessories, changes to the console itself, and so on.

    Wii:
Wireless Nunchuck (1st Party), add a "turn off controller but not console" button to the wiimote (yes, I know there are a couple ways to turn them off otherwise, but it's really a hassle); or at least change how the firmware to turn them off works.

    PS3:
Laptop kit. Seriously. Sony could even do it without significantly raising costs. On the manufacturing end, the only real additions it would need would be a screen and a keyboard, probably less than $100-150, and the PS3's price is going down anyway. A laptop would be a great fit for the PS3-- it already runs linux, so it wouldn't take much to just ship it with Yellow Dog/Ubuntu preinstalled. It would make the console much more attractive to students. Plus, a Docking Station could be included to allow it to be used hooked up to a regular TV very easily. If sony released one of these at $600, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I'd consider anything up to $800.

    DS:
Not sure if it's a hardware or software issue, but not being able to use WPA is unacceptable.

    Blu-Ray adapter for 360? >.>

Some way to run IE or some other sort of web browser on 360 would be nice as well. Otherwise I'm currently pretty happy w/ XBL Marketplace, but it'd be nice to have the option to just buy a game outright and download it as opposed to buying the disc for it.

On that note, out of curiosity, does anyone know why 360 needs to both install FFXI onto the hardrive and still use the disc to play the game, while PS2/3 can just install the game? I don't know alot about the inner workings on stuff like that, but it really does drive me nuts, especially when most of my 360 freezes appear to come from the system being unable to read the disc, not to mention the fact that you spend forever installing the game only to continue to play it off the disc.

Isn't it a little early for this?

Now that Sony has CELL proven to be an effective force with game development, it's likely they'll continue along its path for subsequent PlayStation consoles. Continuing to use CELL technology will allow for far cheaper costs once they launch their next platform in 5-8 years, whenever the hell it will be. 2-3 CELL cores each with their own 8-SPE units sounds the most likely, along with a quad-layer BD drive (100GB), a next-gen GPU and Physics card, and a high capacity (500GB+) removable flash hard drive or something. I'd expect a price point of $400-500, no more.

The only thing potentially standing in the way of full digital distribution next-gen is the retailer. I'm positive Sony is going to attempt to sidestep retailers next-gen (they're already trying to lay the groundwork for it...games like Warhawk and GT5: Prologue wouldn't have BD releases if it weren't for retailers bitching), it's just a matter of not cutting off ties completely with their retail partners, which would be bad for business.

        Price drop.

Oh hardware. I don't care until there is a price drop.

Pretty sure Blu Ray for 360 is already in the works. I wouldn't be surprised if they've been working on it as long as the HD player, in case it failed.

          Hardware. That's software.

I'm talking about next-gen as in, PS3, 360, wii. Guess it's a little out of date, but they're really just beginning to take off.

See? Told you I don't know about this kind of shit, lol. Hardware? Give it a microwave and a mini-fridge so I don't need to get up as often while I'm playing games.

it's... it's not that hard to understand. Hardware is physical stuff. Plastic, metal, circuits; the console itself, and controllers are hardware. Software is programs. Games, applications.

I'm aware of that lol, it's more I'm not used to differentiating between them when discussing video game systems, I count them both together as what the system can do. And I still want that microwave.

                  Oh. Pfft.

                  It's not next-gen anymore.

I don't think we need to worry about "next gen" consoles yet. If we go on a five year span this time around, I'll just give up on "next gen" and stick with handhelds for the rest of time. There's really no need to even be thinking about new consoles at the moment. Especially when a system that is partially last-gen is still leading the market.

I'd like a system with gobs of VRAM and plenty of CPU.

                      Big HDD a plus.

                          OP, read it?

Although, Feba was definitely misleading in his thread title: I thought the same thing you did at first. That was, of course, until I read the OP.

This unintentionally raises a matter that's been concerning me for a while: how on Earth are Nintendo going to top themselves in a few years?

Maybe something along the lines of this: lolGraphics, indeed.
