I wouldn't really say that originality is required for excellence. Pretty much any art you see is going to have heavy roots in some other art, which is going to have roots in other art; that doesn't mean it's not good.

For example, for as much praise Portal gets for being 'original', it was really just an expansion of an old independent game called Narbacular Drop (VALVe hired the team to make Portal). Was Portal still very very good? Yes.

Good lord Raydeus, do you have a Tetris fetish!? Don't tell me you like it when your girlfriend dresses up as a L , right?

Tetris trains your mind so you can sort things and put them in the most efficient place on the fly, which in return allows for longer playing time with lots of fun involved.

I dunno, I'm sure there's a moral right there but I don't know where.

Moral: Tetris is awesome.

And I don't care if MGS4 gets better reviews than GTA4 or not. I don't think it will since GTA's a much more mainstream and casual franchise. Either way, MGS4 is the Game of the Forever for me and I don't need any reviews to tell me that.

I don't care if you care, I care if you're willing to take a gamble on saying MGS4 will do as well or better (98 or above on Metacritic.).

If you're not quite willing to say that, how about 95? (Below Super Mario Galaxy and Bioshock, but above COD4)

Without trying to let any bias get in the way (failure imminent), I do honestly believe that MGS4 will be the greatest game ever created. Now, I know I haven't played it but what we've heard from reviews and what I've personally heard from anyone else who's played through the game and divulged their opinion on it seems to fall in line with that sentiment.

There are 5 final reviews on MGS4 so far; four of them have scored the game perfectly, and one of them awarded it a 9.6 out of 10. If things continue this way it would easily become more critically acclaimed than GTA4, but the problem is that GTA4 was given 10s all around almost in a sense of peer pressure. Gamespot even took down their initial score of 9.5 after multiple other sites revealed their perfect scores for the game and reawarded it a 10, attributing the change to a "bug in their scoring system."

My personal opinion is that GTA4 did not deserve the all-around 10s it received. I can understand some people considering it perfect but I find it rather hard to believe that GTA4 represents the pinnacle of the videogame medium. It's been far better and it's going to get far better than GTA4, even if the game is fantastic. I honestly can't say how I think MGS4 will do critically. I think it's certainly capable of receiving all-around 10s like GTA4. If it is Kojima's best game yet like everyone seems to be saying then there's no way it can't score perfectly; nearly every site has rated previous games in the series with very high scores.

But no, I don't think it'll end up with higher scores than GTA4. Some site or two out there will pull the "but it's only on PS3" card and try to find something wrong with the game, whereas nearly every GTA4 review out there has plenty to say about the game being imperfect while still handing out a "perfect" score.

I think most complaints about MGS4 will come from the story; other than that I don't see how it could possibly be considered lacking in any department. It has the some of the best production values, visuals and direction we've ever seen in a game; it has an absolutely breathtaking soundtrack and the best audio fidelity I've ever experienced in a film or videogame; it has the gameplay that made MGS4 great while, apparently, building on it in so many ways that it's yet another revolution in gameplay; and it has the lasting appeal of multiple playthroughs and a very intense online portion. While the story has been deemed perfect by everyone who's reviewed the game so far it's pretty inevitable that someone is going to claim that it's not worth playing for those who've never experienced MGS before.

My guesses would be A+, A+, A- from 1up/EGM, 9.8 from GameInformer, 5/5 from Gamepro, 9.8 from IGN, 9.5 from Gamespot, 10 from CVG, 10 from Eurogamer, and 40/40 from Famitsu. I really can't say what I truly expect from the game's reviews until I play it for myself, but like I said...if it's Kojima's best game yet then it probably deserves 11/10. MGS4 is a far more ambitious project than HALO 3, GRAND THEFT AUTO 4, or SUPER MARIO GALAXY, but the franchise has had far less of an impact on the masses than any of those franchises. I truly think most of the games media industry is biased in such a way where reviews favour more popular brands, so I won't be surprised if MGS4 is released as a perfect game with non-perfect critical acclaim putting it below GTA4. It's only a matter of time before some idiot reviewer writes the words "MGS4 is great but it's not worth the $400 price of admission" we've seen so many times already in PS3 reviews.

Well, it depends on how you're looking at video games.

If you look at them as games, like Go, Baseball, Jacks, GTA4 is an extremely good one.

Again I want to point out that a perfect score doesn't have to mean that the game is actually perfect. Nothing is.

I will agree on MGS4 being more ambitious, but being a giant game isn't always better. Hell, there was at least one level in Super Mario Galaxy that was just a reskin, and it was still pretty fun.

I think I see why you disagree with most reviews-- they're looking at games as being something fun that you play, and you're looking at them as an art form more like films and novels. There's a big gap between the two, sometimes. The works of art are usually fun, but the really fun ones are rarely works of art.

The thing is Kojima + MGS = Bigger and better.

Even his "failure" (MGS2) adds so much depth to the concept, both story-wise and lore-wise. Plus the phylosophical ramifications (albeit weird sometimes) left me wondering what the heck had happened till I replayed the game like 2 more times. Just like the best animes, there's so much depth into it I didn't really get till like the 3rd time I watch the series. And that was the failure.

So hopefuly this will surpass both MGS and Sneak Eater.

Well, it is very difficult to compare GTA4 to MGS4 without bringing up those differences. Without being looked at as more than something you play, MGS wouldn't be MGS. I don't know if Rockstar was going for anything in the same field but MGS4 is looking to be one of the most important stories ever told in a videogame. Kojima's always had a very strong political and philosophical commentary in his games but the entire basis of MGS4 is extremely relevant to our lives today. That's something that goes beyond the videogame, which many developers rarely accomplish in their stories.

That said, I still look at MGS as a game. In fact, my last playthrough of MGS3 was the first time that I played through skipping all the cutscenes and dialogues and just taking the best gun in the game and killing everyone and blowing everything up. It was a very different experience but it was still very polished and fun. The franchise's greatest accomplishment, in my opinion, is being able to tell one of the most complex and compelling stories in games today without losing the fun factor. Lengthy cutscenes is a valid complaint but MGS does not play like an interactive movie.

And pfft, failure? MGS2 is my favourite, and still the bestselling game in the franchise. Though there's no point arguing about which one is the best in the series so far. MGS4 will shame them all.

I totally agree with you, MGS2 was by far my favorite. I totally agree with you, I don't feel MGS4 will get as much critical acclaim as GTA4, but I suppose thats to be seen. I agree with you, Metal Gear Solid will be the Best Game in all of Forever.

I don't think putting life on hold will be too much for this game!

Metal Gear Solid (2 Specifically), inspired me to get into film, writing, and made me realize videogames can be more than just a fun ride (An argument can be made from my own personal experience that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time held this truth to me as well, but not as brightly as MGS2).
