  • What have you learned from video games that you've later used?

Of course there are plenty of things to learn from video games, but how much of that knowledge have you later been able to use in real life?

The biggest one I remember is winning a trivia contest. The question was about a metal alloy-- which I happened to know because of FFXI synthing.

I also remember fixing something once based on something I'd seen in a game, but I can't remember what.

In the 6th grade I tried to use the word "grotto," a word I learned from Zelda:OoT in some form of writing, and the teacher had me change the word because he didn't recognize it. Then I got confused because I had read the word in a context of proper engrish (game), but was still at the age of believing that what my teachers told me would be true because they saidz it.

    Turns out he sucked.

I've learnt about the mythical creatures from various religons from Final fantasy i.e. shiva, bahamut, garuda, leviathon etc etc.

I also learned that their are arseholes, pricks and complete tossers all around the world and not just in my country.

I learned how to solve puzzles and manage my money effectively.

Unfortunately, I also learned that I cannot wallkick great distances, as well.

I've learned that as soon as I leave my house for one night, my beloved peasant village will be burnt to the ground; hence, I strive to become a unsociable hermit who never has to leave their home.

The word "Evasion" and all variants. (At least, that's the biggest thing that comes out in my mind, and I am sure there are many others; I find this thread weird, as I was just thinking about it yesterday.)

I can't remember exactly what it was, something about mitochondria from the original Parasite Eve. There was something either about temperature of cellular respiration that eventually worked its way on to one of my college exams.

Ohboy, I loved Parasite Eve, but its concept of Mitochondria was perhaps the funniest thing I've ever read.

The best lesson that could've possibly carried over to RL: When something big and/or bad is coming at you, jump the fuck out of the way.

Also, my vocabulary at least tripled as a kid thanks to RPGs giving me words like 'spoony'.

                          Vocabulary.

When I was in 8th grade, we held the annual spelling bee, where the regional winner goes on to Washington, D.C. (I placed 4th in the regional, for reasons I will rant about only if anyone cares to hear them) At my school, one of the chosen words was rheumatic. All around the room full of 7th and 8th graders, people could not spell this word to save their lives. I contemplated something while others continuously spell the word wrong. When it got to be my turn, I requested a definition (to be certain), and rattled the correct spelling seconds later. Everyone else in the class was amazed, wondering how on earth I knew that.

Where did I know this word? The original Dragon Warrior. In the town of Kol, a woman standing near the fountain claims, "These waters cure rheumatism" (or something similar). I had no idea what rheumatism was, but I garnered from the context that it was some sort of ailment. When the teacher at my school defined rheumatic for me, I made the connection right away, and I simply corrected the "ism" to "ic" and provided the correct spelling.

Students asked me, "How did you know that?" Before I could answer a definition, my teacher broke in, saying, "She reads a lot."

                          Yeah.

                          I read.

Fantasy conversations in a video game realm, but sure.

To this day, I smugly keep the knowledge that I expanded my vocabulary through the playing of video games. When people say that video games are not educational, or tout their V-smile systems as the "first ever educational video game systems," I resist the urge to slap them, and simply smile to myself knowingly. Ignorant fools.

I learned english on my own from playing RPGs (mainly FF games).

                            (Yeah I can't say I learned it, but I tried )

But the things I learned from games that I actually use in rl are stuff like how to look for paths when in a construction site. It's fun because I move around in a mix of a FPS and very out of shape prince of persia.

I can't say it's very safe, but having to go around the whole freaking mall to reach the other side of the corridor because some morons thought it would be a good idea to close all the accesses at the same time isn't for me.

I just wish I could do the stuff Drake from uncharted does, that would save me a lot of time moving around.
