Re: SE's New Upcoming Untitled MMORPG

"With GDC 2008 just around the corner, the eyes of the gaming community always turn to it for the latest on game development, trailers, gaming engines, and general information about their up and coming anticipated titles. This isn’t anything new of course and gamers and developers alike have looked forward to this event over the course of its history. The latest news coming out of the pre-GDC time period is that Square Enix is now confirmed to have several speakers on hand.

Taka Murata – Murata is the General Manager of the Research and Development Division for Square Enix Co. Taka has over 15 years of game developing experience and is partly responsible for some of Square’s heaviest hitters in gaming. He will be discussing the new White Engine being used for FFXIII, a new MMO under development, and will take you through the process of the engine’s development.

Isamu KamikoKuryo – Isamu joined the Square Enix family after being mesmerized by the playing experience that FFVII delivered to him. Since then he has done behind the scenes art for FFX and was one of the lead art designers for FFXIII. Isamu is expected to discuss the art direction behind FFXIII, how he gets his inspiration, how he was trained, and how his concept designs help influence the game development.

Fumiaki Shiraishi – Fumiaki is the systems and network programmer for Final Fantasy XI and Front Mission Online. He got his start by creating successful RPG’s in his high school computer room and his career took off from that point forward. Shiraishi will be discussing the development and look of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Little King which is a WiiWare game. This will then be followed by explaining the difficult decisions that went into creating this game with just a 40MB limit.

With three key members of the Square Enix family at GDC, this can only prove to be an informative time for supporters of the company. Not to mention a new confirmed MMO being under development, we can only imagine the addiction that lay in hiding. The success of FFXI has obviously given Square the push forward to creating a next generation MMO. If history repeats itself, it can only lead to good things for fans of the genre. "

Agreed. It will just become a case of "he who has the most money wins". Sure there are games that have successfully run similar operations, but every one I have participated in has turned out bad. I don't see what is wrong with the current pay system, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it, I say.

        Again, EVE online disagrees.

I really don't see where you people get the idea that "this business model will automatically lead to the game being ruined".

A lot of people dislike paying monthly fees for MMOs. Look at all the private servers out there for most other MMOs. And really, how many of us wouldn't have switched to a private server if SE had leaked a copy, and we could run around using Windower plugins and JP IME and other non-cheating (speedhacking, pos hacks, bots etc.) HELPFUL applications without fear of being banned. Or even just the aspect of not paying.

Private servers also breed pirating the software itself-- FFXI's software is a useless waste to torrent for anyone that doesn't play, but if free servers were around it would be a much larger factor (of course, most MMOs give away their client nowadays, but it's still a loss of profit)

Monthly payments as a system might not be 'broken', but they might not be the best option.

The whole being able to buy currency from S-E is meh, unless the best gear isn't buyable by any means. That means no crafting of items with any enchantments. But it can be pulled off seeing they are not doing it into FFXI.

Doesn't the FFCC title for Wii have something to do with a King?

"Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Young King and the Promised Land" is the literal translation. Simulation RPG where you control the king of a town post the events of FFCC.

About the real money trade for ingame items or whatnot... if they do that, I hope they make some servers where you cant buy anything with real money, and other servers where you can. That would solve everything, i thinks.

Re: SE's New Upcoming Untitled MMORPG

Server splintering to appease different groups isn't a good idea.

First, that would still allow RMT on those servers, except instead of being under SE's control, it would be IGE's. Second, multiple worlds in general is a poor form of gameplay. Third, could you imagine if SE split the servers into groups where, for example, RNG was or wasn't nerfed? There would need to be separate work done to keep them balanced, separate work done to make sure things don't get too out of control-- the same would apply to two different economic models.

Sure, the economy might not be something you think about in an MMO as often as game mechanics, but you sure as hell notice when something goes wrong.

                        Thats true aswell.

I really just don't like the idea. It highly depends on what you can buy.

Anyway, who got this info, can it be proven? is it just speculation? some random guy probably said "i wish SE releases a free mmo where they make money selling ingame items" because their mommy wont pay for his games, and that evolved into waaaaaay too much...?

Re: SE's New Upcoming Untitled MMORPG

I don't think anyone was talking about a real world money based economy (ala Entropia, SL) so much as being able to buy gil/items with money instead of time.

But from what I've seen, it seems like SE is only considering it as one of it's options, as well it should.

The moment rl currency is involved in a game beyond a monthly fee (even if games are designed around the concept of RMT'ing), the moment I'll forget they exist.

Right. I've seen several suggestions that "My Life as a King" could be the western title for it though.

I haven't heard anything about what "Sigma Harmonics" is going to be used for though, I guess its a possibility for this.

Then again, SE does have a history of registering trademarks then not using them.

Kind of the "legalization of drugs" argument. You'd be creating servers of players that essentially discredit themselves for paying their way through the game and elite servers for players who don't.

Honestly, any game that they let you pay your way through isn't a game I'm going to give my money to start with. Its poor game design and gives players a hollow sense of accomplishment. EQ2 does this and I think its actually less successful than its predecessor.
